JPJ Contract

I disagree. If a team like the Bills thought they were a pass rusher away and wanted Watt bad enough, it would happen. No trade clauses are very rare and according to this article (https://www.si.com/nfl/texans/which-nfl-players-no-trade-clauses-contracts), Watt does not have one.

Thanks 448, I thought part of the reason he was holding was because of that trade clause. Suddenly he signed and Just assumed he got it.

Appreciate yaz and all your great post(s) along the way.

What has Benton done to deserve getting locked up? Underperformed, while being played out of position? We have young guys on the DL ready to make him obsolete, we don't have anyone ready to push Porter off the roster. Even Ramsey has said that JPJ is the man in the secondary.
Who? Harmon, for sure. Not Black. You don't need every player to be a superstar if they can get Benton on a midrange starter deal.

Benton is a talented player who the stupid head coach actually did play out of position. He’s better served playing off the edge which I believe will happen this year.
Hayward can’t play forever and we need to keep Benton and play him off the edge and not NT.
As for Porter, no one said push him off the roster, only want to see more before locking him up for what he thinks he’s worth.
He has not played like a 30 million dollar per season CB. He has improved but I’d like to see him improve in 2026 then lock him up next off season. As I mentioned, they can franchise tag him while working out his contract next year. If he has a great season then by all means, lock him up. I want to see more from him.

Which statistics do you think Porter needs to improve upon this season for it to be great?

That’s strictly your opinion. I suppose we’ll see how it plays out but I’m for extending Benton.

I think he’s gotten better with lowering his PI penalty issues but I want to see him repeat that this season.
Yes, he’s gotten better but he needs to continue improving before I’d commit 30 million per season.

I want to see him perform not in a Tomlinized scheme.

That in itself will go a long ways on determining that high $$$$denar$$$$ contract.

Tagging him is an option I’m sure the Steelers have thought about and just might entertain.

If you pay him 30M you are saying " we're ok with the PI penalties ".
Stingley, Horn, and Surtain…all in the ballpark where Porter wants paid had the same or more penalties. Factor in probably half the calls on Porter were reputation penalties, I’d say that area of his game is overblown.

100% agree. Most of Porter's penalties are ticky tac calls. You see other CBs do them game in and out....without flag. Pay Porter now. He is talent where we have failed for a decade to produce a talented option.

As I was told multiple of times on other contacts......in 2 or 3 years if we pay him now......it will be peanuts in 3 to 5 years. So pay the man now....perhaps.

Just curious, if JPJ’s penalties are 1/2 reputation penalties, wouldn’t the other players mentioned have near or some of that ratio ?

I think if they sign him this season it’s going to be $25.2 - $29 mil / per. 4yr w/5th option (hopefully)

I also hope there is a 5th year option in that contract.

As a whole on all the variables and possibilities, that is what has excitement buzzing for Training Camp / pre-season / season to start. We all want to see how these things play out.

I'm not sure if any other CB in the league has the reputation of being handsy like Porter. Then again, I have a Pittsburgh-centric view of the NFL. Either way, his penalties against are on par or below some of the best in the league.

You answered my question very well. Thank You SIR.

I think JPJ is very good, but still have a little reserve as to if he is just good in that awful scheme or is he going to be very good in a better more complex NFL scheme ?

I think he will thrive in either formate yet still show signs of growing (good thing) and handsy play as well.

EDIT: Pro - or - Con, that franchise tag should remain a possibility in that contract negotiation
