Judge: California must allow transgender inmates' earrings

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - California prison officials must provide for free undergarments that flatten the chest of transgender inmates at women's prisons and give transgender inmates at men's prisons access to bracelets, earrings, hair brushes and hair clips, a federal judge said Friday.

U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar issued the order in a federal lawsuit that earlier led California to become the first state to provide taxpayer-funded sex reassignment surgery to an inmate.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation also agreed as part of the suit by Shiloh Quine to give transgender inmates access to certain products. Quine, 57, had sex reassignment surgery in January and was transferred from a men's facility to a women's prison in Chowchilla. She is serving a life sentence for murder, kidnapping and robbery.

Prison officials said they are reviewing the ruling.

Tigar's ruling came in a dispute over the products transgender inmates should have access to. Corrections officials allow transgender female inmates in men's prisons to have sandals, t-shirts and walking shoes. Tigar's ruling Friday expanded that list to include pajamas, nightgowns, robes and scarves, rejecting the corrections department's argument that those items could be altered to resemble street clothes, aiding in escape attempts.

Another judge had ruled that earrings, bracelets, hair brushes and hair clips could pose safety concerns in men's prisons. Tigar, noting that women's prisons allow those items, said they could be made from materials such as rubber that didn't create safety risks.

Corrections officials also allow transgender male inmates at women's prisons to buy undergarments known as binders or compressions tops. Tigar said that was "effectively" denying those items to inmates who could not afford them.

I cant figure out why any inmates would be allowed any jewelry, at all, including hair clips, bobby pins, whatever.

Here is a shapeless orange jump suit with some shapeless underwear. Good luck.

741 prisoners on the death row.

Why do I get the feeling that you live in one of the red welfare states California supports?
What's California's state deficit again?

How much federal aid did they need for that whole crumbling dam thing? Sorry - They're supporting HOW many states?

How many undocumented visitors are staying in California and currently being paid under the table by California residents and business owners in order to avoid taxes, both personal and corporate?

If California DID actually get its wish and became an "independant country" how exactly would they survive on their own with no military, no infrastructure, no reasonable source of fresh water, no sustainable tax base, import and export tariffs imposed upon them, no port or airline traffic... Have they actually thought this **** through at all? I mean are the citizens of California actually prepared to immediately become a third world country so they can host every undocumented visitor from the United States who will automatically flock to the new mecca of freedom and opportunity until the realize Califuckedup is not what they thought it was going to be?

I mean you don't think the United States would just LET California have all the ******* ports and the military bases and ****? No. The ports would move north. And anybody trying to **** with American ports or traffic TO American ports would be in some serious ****, wouldn't they? In fact, folks would probably need permission from the American Navy to visit the Califuckedup ports. Because we'd be the big ******* country and Califuckedup would be the little tiny satellite P.O.S. third world country that's little more than a boil on our ***. You get that, right?

California is not special. They aren't important. They happen to live on the coast and take advantage of everyone else because the sun shines and they have beaches. There's not a ******* thing special about California. Get over it. You wanna go, ******* go. Don't let the door hit you in the ***. But remember, you leave the country with what you came with, ******* nothing.

P.S. Have a great day.

You forgot African-American slaves were "involuntary immigrants".........

No one here ever owned any slaves. You need to talk to the Muslim hordes who feel it is divinely ordained to take infidel slaves.

Why do I get the feeling that you live in one of the red welfare states California supports?

Just a hunch.

California cant even support itself, let alone other states.
