Ballage was a four star recruit and looking at him you see why. 6’ 1.5”, 228lbs, 32 3/4” arms with a massive 77” wingspan. He’s also very athletic running a 4.46 40 and nimble feet for a man his size having a 6.91 3-cone.
Watching his tape Ballage split time at Arizona state and was the goal line back. Stats aren’t nearly as impressive as his tape.
Ballage is a patient runner and when he sees the hole plants his foot and bursts through. He isn’t Barry Sanders but has enough wiggle to make defenders not get a squared tackle and he’s powerful enough to bounce past arm tackles. He also has above average hands for a RB. Catching 64 balls for 560 yards over the last two seasons. He is also above average in pass protection ranking 2nd in the PAC-12 for RBs only allowing 3 pressures in 70 blocks.
I think what the Steelers do in the draft will go a long way towards what’s in the works for Bells contract. If they do RB 1-3 rounds I believe he plays his tag out and they don’t negotiate until they see what the rookie and Connor do this year. If they go RB 4th or later they still try to get Bell locked up long term but they are covering their butts Incase he won’t sign.
I personally don’t want a first or second round RB. I’d be ok after that but I think Connor needs more opportunities and I’d like to see another draft pick in camp.
My opinion. Ceiling Le’Veon Bell. Floor James Starks. I like him and he doesn’t have a lot of tread on the tires. Worst case scenario he’s a backup who can spot start and play special teams.
