Kudos to the D

Timmons is not a bad player. I would not pick him over Kirkland or Farrior, I have watched them all play.

Considering what Kirkland and Farrior had in front of them, Timmons is pretty damn good. Would you put a DL of Tuitt, McClendon, Heyward at or above Joel Steed, prime Casey Hampton, prime Aaron Smith, prime Beard, Kimo, Ray Seals, Kevin Henry, Orpheus Roye, Brentson Buckner, Oliver Gibson, Nolan Harrison, etc.?

I watched them all-in person from 72 till 96 and from then till now on TV. The stats I looked at included sacks, passes defensed, ints, and forced fumbles. So if we write all those off we have my impression vs yours and I think he's far better than "not bad".

You think he's far better thN not bad but he graded out as the 23 rd ilb in the league last year and don't expect him to be higher this year. He makes far more mistakes than any of the great linebackers mentioned and makes a shipload of tackles several yards down field after running around the play. Let's not get Into the fact he's a moron and can't line himself or anyone else up in the proper position, is a bad linebacker at the point of attack. He was at his best the first couple yet when he was used on oassing downs and they did a lot more with him as far as blitzing and lining up all over. He is not a 9 mill linebacker more like a 4 mill ilb.

Hell no you have 10 guys on that line:rolleyes:
One of the best I can think of was Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton, Kimo Von Olehoffen. I would even put that line ahead of Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton, Brett Kiesel. One the lineman I really wish they had kept was Orpheous Roye.

Heyward is turning out to be a good one. Might end up being a special one. I think Tuitt has the potential to do the same. Still need McLendon or McCullers to be that anchor in the middle; or to find one in the draft or free agency.

I said in the OP that all we need is above average and that's what they did, 400 yards? that's pretty normal on today's NFL and as ark said, less than 3 TDs is a good day day for the D.

So lovefest? not even close, real expectations considering the talent on roster? that's what we are talking about here

Pretty normal? Only 4 teams average 400 yards per game, and Atlanta, even with Julio Jones, isn't one of them. They average 5.9 yards per play, and that number was 7.1 against the Steelers. How is that ABOVE average?

So the Falcons scored a few less points without their biggest playmaker. Big whoop. You're kidding yourself...average with a lucky turnover or two is about the best we can hope for from this defense.

Two things come to mind for me:

1. Who cares? They played good enough to win as evidenced by the score.

2. And if we get average with a "lucky" turnover (which Gays pick 6 was not) and win this year, I'll take it as opposed to the opposite.

Other teams get turnovers due to good play. We only get them by luck. Never mind that, in the Saints game, Ben was throwing to the Saints DBs like he bet on the number of ints he would throw.

Yep, all of Gay's NFL record tying three pick sixes in a season were lucky. As was McCain's pick six. SMH. Essentially, if the defense does it's job, it's luck. If they fail, it's lack of skill.
