Lamar Jackson & Ravens handling of his ankle injury

1) How many reps did Rudolph get with the first string the week of the Lions game?

2) So you just know Rudolph is nothing but a backup. Wow, you are smarter than ever NFL decision maker out there. Just like those brilliant packer fans šŸ˜‚

3) Ok, so show me another or better example. Or are you saying we didnā€™t draft and groom Rudolph to be Roethlisbergerā€™s replacement?

4) If Rudolph throws for 4000ish yards and a 2:1 TD to INT ratio we donā€™t look for a QB in the 2023 draft. If Rudolph isnā€™t showing improvement or consistently by December we probably see QB2 and or QB3 and go QB early in the 2023 draft.

Itā€™s that simple.
1. The Steelers had a walk-thru practice on Thursday. Rudolph got starters reps on Wednesday and Thursday, so he got a majority of the reps that week.

2. I don't even know what this is suppose to mean. If Rudolph is such a high sought-after starter, how many NFL decision makers are throwing up a premium draft pick to acquire Rudolph? If the Steelers believed in him that much, why didn't they move on from Roethlisberger after last season when he was clearly done as a franchise QB. If the Steelers believed in him as their next franchise QB, why did they only give him a one-year extension that is paying him $3 million in base salary? It seems like some NFL decision makers are doubting his ability as a franchise QB,

3. I think the Steelers wanted to groom Rudolph to take over for Ben, but I am also 100% convinced the whole first-round grade is lip service.

4. Kirk Cousins puts up great stats, makes a lot of money, and does a great job leading his team to 7-8 wins a year. Maybe I have the Roethlisberger mindset, but I'm more interested in wins than stats.

You also cited Steelers Depot, so I assume you're referring to Alex Kozora, who is as good as it gets for film breakdown. Watch at 13:46 and if you don't want to watch, here's what he had to say:

But to me we've seen the best of Mason Rudolph. I think he's basically at his ceiling of being a spot starter backup, a serviceable No. 2 kind of guy who can come in and play acceptable for you or the kind of football that gets you a tie against an 0-8, and that 0-8-1 Lions team, but certainly I'm not seeing anything here that's elevating this play of others so significantly that it warrants, um, taking a chance of him being the future guy. I think he can be a capable and largely fine, although, far from exciting backup and that's really where he's at and that's what he was in this game and that's kind of where I see his future being. So if Pittsburgh what's to start him Week 1 next year, they're gonna get what they're gonna get, which is going to be just average at best kind of play, average to mediocre, somewhere in that range. Um, I don't want to be too harsh about that because a lot of quarterbacks can't et to that level. It is hard playing quarterback in the NFL, man, and be a capable backup is not me trying to be a slight against him, it's just recognizing that he is not a long-term guy, not a franchise guy, and to me, probably not even a bridge type of guy where you're a one-year starter, you know veteran to rookie kind of an option.

1) so Wednesday practice and walk through. I guess he sucks. Might as well forget about the Browns game the season before. Horrible. You are just SOOOOOOOOOO smart. šŸ‘ šŸ‘ šŸ‘ šŸ¤¦

2) I donā€™t know what the Steelers have been offered. Do you? I mean you obviously have insider information. I mean you already KNOW Rudolph us nothing but a backup. Look into your crystal ball and tell me what theyā€™ve been offered.

3) I personally did not have a first round grade on Rudolph because the offense he ran in college isnā€™t inducive to the pros. Probably why he fell. But the Steelers did not need a QB either at that point. So they drafted him for the future not for the moment. Rudolph got thrust into the starting lineup his second year. He looked ā€œokā€ until he got knocked out. He regressed. But last year in his one start he looked good. Versus the Lions he and his receivers werenā€™t on the same page. Look at that late throw to DJ. DJ sits and Rudolph correctly read the safety and was throwing to where DJ should have continued running. If DJ does itā€™s a TD and game over. Sure it shouldnā€™t come down to one play but there were several lesser plays where they were off. I contribute this to not getting enough practice time. Roethlisberger is a gamer. He isnā€™t as much of an Xā€™s and Oā€™s guy but a backyard QB. Rudolph is a scripted QB. He does what the play is designed to do. Heā€™s not good at reading the defense yet but he definitely understands the offensive concepts. Bottom line heā€™s his own player. Heā€™s not Roethlisberger. Rodgers is a completely different QB than Favre. Thereā€™s many different ways to be a good QB in the NFL.

Kirk Cousins on the right team could probably win a super bowl. If Rudolph has Cousins stats I would be happy with his play.

Kozora is a blow hard. Iā€™ve forgotten more about football than heā€™ll ever know.

1. Tuesday walk-thru, Wednesday practice, Thursday practice.
I also didn't forget about the Browns loss in 2020 in which he completed 56% of his passes.

2. NFL insiders thrive on trade rumors and if there was any serious action going on, either the team or agents would've let information slip to the media. They didn't so I doubt anything going on in terms of a potential trade market.

Kozora is more than a blow hard, but that's beside the point. I'm in line with his assessment of Rudolph and I would say most are. I understand you have a high opinion of Rudolph, but when it comes down to the future, I don't think Rudolph is the Steelers long-term answer at QB and I think we'll see that play out over the next couple of seasons.

1) nope Rudolph sucks and has no chance in the NFL. We understand that now. You are super smart.

2) but Rudolph was on the trade block, right? I mean he sucks so the Steelers were actively trying to trade him. Probably would have taken a 12 pack of beer to pry him away.

3) Koroza is a moron. Heā€™s a dork that never played football that talks like he knows football. If anything his assessment makes me feel thereā€™s a better shot than I think of Rudolph being an NFL starter. I was thinking 1/3 shot but maybe itā€™s closer to 2/3. šŸ¤”

1. I never said he sucks unless you consider this assessment as a player sucking: "Rudolph is what he is at this point--a solid backup and a decent spot starter. There is nothing about his play that says he is a franchise QB and at best looks like a guy who can get you 8-9 wins if he has a strong running game and a good defense to support him."

I do appreciate your passion for Rudolph, though. I also find it odd, on a discussion board, that you are taking someone disagreeing with your opinion on a player so personally. There are probably a lot of guys on this roster that we, and others, view and value differently.

2. I never said he was on the trade block, only suggested if he was a potential franchise quarterback that either the Steelers or another NFL team would've invested heavily into him. There were no trade rumors and more importantly, the Steelers made a minimal financial investment in him for next season. Shrewd business move.

How does Lamar Jacksons ankle turn into a Mason Rudolph discussion? lol

Rudolph is a career backup just as Landry Jones was, and I would even say he wouldn't make it as a #2 QB on some rosters.

The history of running QB's is as follows:
  • Young and healthy, "Wow, look at that guy GO!!"
  • After first couple of injuries, "God, he is a bad passer. He needs to run more."
  • After no longer a running threat, "He is horrible! Jeez, can't they find somebody, ANYBODY, better?"
Steve Young says hi...

Tomlin has all but said he wants a guy who can use his legs at QB. Given the time theyā€™ve spent scouting Sam Howell I really hope they arenā€™t considering taking him in the first round. Itā€™ll be interesting to see how much effort they put into scouting Malik Willis as well.
I don't like either option. Howell is a poor man's Baker Mayfield. Malik Willis is not even in Lamar's stratosphere...

Steve Young says hi...
Steve Young didn't have runs designed for him very often. Yeah he would take off when he didn't have anywhere to throw the ball. Lamar Jackson without the ability to run wouldn't even be in the NFL. They design the running game around him. He is often their leading rusher.

I'm not going down your rabbit hole...

Yes, there are designed running plays for QBs but do not think that Steve Young wasn't a running QB that could throw very well.

Google it.

You google it.

In 15 years Steve Young had 722 rushing attempts.
In less than 4 years Lamar Jackson has 615 rushing attempts.

I just donā€™t get why a QB canā€™t play with a sprained ankle. I mean heā€™s a ā€œlegitā€ QB, right? Sit back and read a defense Lamar and pick them apart šŸ˜‚. Man I was laughing so hard typing that. Lamar couldnā€™t read Dr. Sues let alone an NFL defense. **** he canā€™t talk let alone do more than one read and scramble.

Here we go...

My last memory of Rudolph starting was when the offense looked pathetic against the Lions in a game we didnā€™t win that will likely cost us a playoff spot.
Our offense looks pathetic every game. Why would that stick in your mind?

Rodgers is an upgrade over Rudy and Ben at this stage of his career. If you have an opportunity (which I don't think they will) you get him and don't look back. Rudy's issues in the red zone won't go away he can't thread the needle. You just rarely have opportunities to get an elite player. Which make no mistake that is what he is.
Meh. Getting Rodgers is a pipe dream....and thankfully so. Unless we upgrade our OL it would simply be a waste to bring him in anyways.

Here we go...
Why isnā€™t he playing? Would Favre, Roethlisberger, Rodgers, Elway, Montana, Young etc not play on a sprained ankle?
Harbaugh knows his limitations. I honestly hope Jackson does stay healthy long enough to sign a massive deal with the rats though. Like a deal that dwarfs Mahomes and guarantees him to be uncuttable for 5+ years. Because Jackson is a torn knee away from not even being an NFL backup.

Rudolph cant be the heir apparent. He's not going to get so much better, compared to what we've seen of him. It's been 4 seasons now, not happening.
Totally disagree in theory. You could be right but your logic is flawed. Until he gets a full season's worth of start's under his belt and some better coaching than the crap he had with Fichtner and now Canada I don't think you can say he can't get better. I absolutely think he can. Simply being in a better scheme with better play calling would give him a real opportunity to show what he can do. His stats and record for a player in his first 12 starts are pretty good. I have been impressed with him at times even with the handicaps he faces with the OC's and the **** line. You can't tell me things were better in 2019, in hindsight the problems have been there since then with the offense and line. Last week he showed some ability to escape the pocket and get some yards. Hell he has our longest run of the season.

Maybe you are right and he has hit his ceiling but we honestly don't know yet and no one can actually say he has.

You do?? I dont remember anyone saying that Rodgers had 0% chance of being the heir apparent to Favre. And please, let's not be absurd, Rudolph has never looked the part of a true franchise qb, to compare his situation to someone like Rodgers is laughable. At his best, he's an "ok" backup qb, that's it.
How many teams have starters who are true franchise QB's? Not many. Most starters in this league are not franchise guys.

Huntley is someone I would take a flyer out on and even kick the tires. The kid is a better passer than Lamar
Huntley maybe decent, but how many times do we see back up QBs come in, look good for a game or 2 then hit the wall or teams figure him out. Im not opposed to taking a flyer on him, but i would pump the brakes a bit
