Senate Democratic leaders have agreed to hold a vote on approval of the Keystone pipeline as early as next week, dropping their longstanding objections after losing their majority last week.

A vote is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, according to the offices of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who are poised to trade titles in January.

McConnell attributed the Democrats' change of heart to the election.

"The American people have elected a new Republican Majority in the Senate and that has already made a difference," he said. "I was glad to see that Senate Democrats have finally backed off trying to obstruct construction of the Keystone XL Pipeline, the single largest shovel-ready project in America."

Legislation to approve the pipeline has broad support in the Senate and was all but guaranteed to pass under the coming Republican majority if Democrats resisted a vote on it during the lame duck session.

See? See? We like unions! Really we do. /Dems

If it passes, the D's then can use that in 2016. See, we passed the Keystone bill not the R's.

I think you're right

Liberals Bash Hillary, Back Warren

Liberal activists are slamming Hillary Clinton in a members-only group on Google, with some calling for Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren to run for the White House in 2016 to teach the former secretary of State and mainstream Democrats a lesson.

"The establishment Dems need to be punished, and the best way for that to happen is for Warren to beat Hillary in the primary on a populist message," Carl Gibson, a progressive activist and writer for Occupy.com, wrote in an email obtained by The Hill.

Elizabeth Warren?!?! The you didn't build that, free education Native-American Senator from Massachusetts who's whiter than Edgar Winter Elizabeth Warren? She's more left than O.

yeah, but according to my libby friends on FB she cannot be swayed by the almighty dollar and therefore we must elect her. You know, wealth redistribution and all that jazz.

Prediction. Dems run Elizabeth Warren. Reps run Romney or some RINO. Reps say "if you vote 3rd party you're risking the very existence of our country by giving your vote to a socialist." The circle of life continues. Nothing changes.

If oil prices keep dropping, will it economical to build the pipeline? I know long-term, it should be, but pols only seem to be able to think short-term.

Also, if it is not currently economical, the Canadians may delay the construction a bit, giving the Dems a "See we passed it and now even they don't want it".

Keystone is about transportation. The U.S. already imports around 29% of it's oil from Canada. The price of oil is irrelevant to the transportation model of Keystone. It's cheaper to use the pipeline so it will be built if approved.

I think this is a very good thing. By the way the gas prices are dropping but for how long?

wait - it gets better

Dirty Harry is back

Senate Democrats Stick With Reid as Their Leader

Senate Democrats have re-elected Harry Reid of Nevada as their leader for the new Congress that convenes in January.

But he will serve as the minority leader instead of majority leader, thanks to Republicans' success in the Nov. 4 elections.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California says Senate Democrats decided to stick with Reid during a lengthy closed meeting Thursday in the Capitol.

I think the dems and Reid deserve each other.

Isn't that what happened the last few times?

Yup. Greatest threat to our nation, lesser of evils, throwing vote away, might as well vote democrat, this isn't the election to vote conscience.... The talking points never change.

Actually I think the Dems would have voted for the pipeline if they won the Senate as well. They just didn't want to lose the Greenie vote for the election.

Gotta love it when people think Hillary isn't Leftist enough.

I think BHO would have killed it. The only reason he didn't was because of the election. He wanted the greenies and the non-greens to vote for dems. When the dems won the senate he would have vetoed any keystone bill and it wouldn't have been overridden. I really don't think it would have even been brought up if they had won. They are just trying to save the LA senate seat.

I'm thinking that the Dems are pissing off Sen. Manchin enough that he'll switch parties in his ever-reddening state. My dad knows him and says he's an incredibly nice guy. /shameless name-dropping

House passes bill to fast-track Keystone XL oil pipeline

The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed legislation authorizing the Keystone XL pipeline on Friday as Senate supporters worked to line up 60 votes to send the measure to the White House.

The 252-161 House vote came amid jockeying by two Louisiana lawmakers — Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy and Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu — to be seen winning authorization for the pipeline before voters decide which of them serves in the Senate next year.

Funny stuff. That bill languishes for two years. The R's take control and almost immediately it passes. Oh, yeah Landrieu is totally responsible.

I'm thinking more along the lines of the cost to get the oil from the sands versus the price of a barrel of oil. I haven't looked lately, but a few years ago people were saying that the price for a barrell of oil didn't justify the cost of getting the oil from sands/shale/whatever. The pipeline can be used for other things, I suppose, and that cost/price structure might not be the same today.

One of the cool comments below one of these stories was the guy lamenting that, if the REAL reason you were against the pipeline were environmental, did those suddenly go away? what changed between a year ago and today to make the pipleine more environmentally friendly? Did it suddenly NOT contribute to Global Warming, err, Climate Change?
