Last night debacle vs. Eagles

I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I don't believe we ran the hurry up last night.

We tried.....but it was.........the hurry up and slow down version that we have become accustomed to........

The thing stood out most for me was the way the Steelers' defenders were getting pummeled all over the field. Play after play our D-linemen and linebackers were just getting man-handled. I saw at least 3-4 plays were Jarvis Jones got thrown around like a rag doll. But it started up front with the defensive linemen - all of them it seemed - were just getting pushed back or tossed aside. It seems we were physically overmatched by a large margin. Not sure what the explanation is, but it made me wince.

The problem is that Thomas didn't play well last night either. I'm not sure he can be a NT that demands double teams. Right now the DL looks just like last year. The dbs look like college players.. bad ones at that. Troy was beaten easily by the TE last night for a TD but the ball was over thrown. Troy looks slow as a snail when he isn't around the LOS.

One of the Steeler beat writers said his play was part of the reason for the Keisel signing....

Just goes to show you how much of a rare breed Hampton was. Players like him are hard to replace. Its more then just weight. When Hampton decided he wasn going to be moved that was it. McClendon reminds me of when we tried Von Oelhoffen at NT. They just didnt demand a double team like we need to free up the linebackers. If McCullers develops any kind of consistent motor and the ability to stay low everytime he will take that spot. Question is if or when will he do it.

Probably. I just know that the DL looks like rag dolls on roller skates. Even Heyward was horrible. Hell they may as well put McCullers in and let him hold the line. If a 3-4 can't control the middle of the defense then they can't stop anything.

On offense they seemed to be leaning on Wheaton to see what he has exactly. Based on last nights game he struggled as the #2. If Brown goes down we will be hurting. The line can still not run block, and I think theres a chance archer will be our starting RB for a couple games. People were saying the eagles had a gameplan against us, and while that may be true we were getting run over / knocked around all over the place. Shazier was getting pushed around and easily neutralized. Mitchell had a couple hits, but still not impressed with him so far. Hopefully he just needs time to mesh with the team. Hard to find anyone who had a good game......I think the offense will be ok going forward, but lots of concerns on D. Jarvis needs to sit for now he is not ready (and probably never will be). Hopefully we can find a pass rusher on the scrap heap because I do not see one on this team.

Thomas didn't play well as an end you are correct, but he also wasn't pushed as far back as McClendon was over and over again. He may not demand the double, but he held ground better. That's not saying he's the next great NT in our system, just that given what we have right now, probably our best option.

The 49ers have scored almost no points this preseason...im really not ready to panic.......but last night, i saw an offense that left points on the field......(1st unit offense)...but i did see some holes Bell and Blount and i know as time progresses the Oline will only improve

what we know for sure

we can't stop the run or the screen pass

we have no pass rush from the outside and the DL is a sieve

now on offense we are down to one WR because nobody else is stepping up and Ben is running for his life on every pass

yep - just like last year

Its pre-season. This happens during the regular season, then we can have a much deeper conversation. Carry on with the bullshit until that time

I thought the pass protection was actually somewhat solid-

Although the Eagles defense is far from talented

I have no problem moving him to nose but I don't think it is going to help much. Pushed back is pushed back. If you can play the NG man to man and get movement then the 3-4 scheme is almost worthless. They'll be able to overrun the smaller quicker LBs. I'd just play McCullers. Not sure he could do any worse.

Yeah, Our D lineman need to be BETTER than or more stout than a 4-3 D lineman. I was watching and forgetting the numbers and I was shocked to see 97 who was getting pushed around , was cam heyward. But they were all getting pushed.

Ike,,,, he took the paycut or he was going to have to leave,, meaning the org realized his play was below the line last year. Did they bring in ANYONE who can compete with him for the starting job? No.

I agree its still preseason.. But to me, that means,, we don't worry about winning and playing starters to the end. We get a look at some rookies and udfa's. We work on our basics

They didn't work on anything last night. They weren't successful at much of anything. Tomlin should be scared to death from what we saw. IMO

Our rbs did little. We need to bring someone in because they will certainly have to miss at least one game. We will be in trouble if archer is starting.

I'm going to hold off blasting them too much until I see them in the regular season. The Eagles offense is hard to play in pre-season form. Their defense however is not very good. I'm hoping they were in "let's not get hurt" mode.

However I agree that they didn't do anything of note last night. I couldn't even tell (outside of Wheaton) who they were looking at because they played the starters late into the game. The entire game just seemed disjointed and disorganized to me.

But I honestly couldn't think of one player who I thought brought it every play last night. Just a clusterfuck.

I think the plan was just to come in and slam our dopey RB's up the gut for 4 qtrs. to beat the **** out of them.

I'm not worried about our offense.

I think not many of you paid attention to the vanilla zone the defense was dropping into all night, rarely showing any of our real scheme. Pretty easy for an up-tempo, mechanical offense like Kelly's to tear through practice defense.

Also, the running game looked great, but we moved to forcing the ball to Wheaton for multiple drives.

Let's not act like this was a sincere effort at winning the game. Tomlin was quoted recently that we'd not be playing to win in the preseason. The doom and gloom from some of you ******* is in mid-season form, lol.

Sounds like mid season form from Tomlin
