Look, it's time to admit something

Change of scenery can make a huge difference. Reid was different coach in KC. Mahomes didn't hurt his cause.
I also look at it in a different light than initially.

I started thinking about how this is his dream job.

I saw him bring an extensive experienced group of defensive coaches in.

Then knowing he is offense competent. We haven’t had that in a while.

Knowing Graham likes to disguise his D, will be light years refreshing compared to an approach that was easy to figure out.

Then I saw the free agency approach where they didn’t bring in a mediocre corner. Where they finally got their number 2 WR. Where they brought in a solid chain moving RB.

Then they brought in a solid run defender to stabilize that sometimes leaky run D.

Then they further solidified the secondary to make it a possible three safety look. Further adds to what Graham likes to do mix it up.

Mike helped himself pretty decently already. Sometimes when you have the experience and have time to reflect you can put out a better model.
Add to it a high want too… very attractive.

There is a possibility of a special season we just have to see it unfold.

Nothing to admit

Draft position changing by 7-8 slots means very little in the greater scheme

Plenty of teams squander early picks or hit late ones…the draft isn’t close to a science. They could be 20 picks earlier and not in a much better position or 20 picks later and not much worse.

Scouting, having a plan/vision, coaching, development, training all have bigger impacts than a few draft slots. Good Teams make their own breaks.

Confession:
The problem is the owner that thinks the Steelers are just a player or two away from contention. Personally speaking, I think the Steelers would have a faster path to a championship by rebuilding rather than recycling the same tired philosophy of bringing in has been dinosaurs that were excellent players a decade ago and hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.

They are -- the right QB would vault this team to contender status. They won't get him picking 21st every year.

Tomlin’s defense and offense was so predictable. Opposing teams knew the plays, both sides of the ball.

It will be a very different story this season, actually having both offensive and defensive coaching minds will help that a lot.

Teams will actually have to fully game plan against us, something that wasn’t as important in the recent past.

MM has a great opportunity here, let’s hope he capitalizes on it.

I'm not sure last year was the year to do it for this draft. Of the names listed in the original post as players that could be available at 14, are they heads and shoulders above what might be at 21? I wil defer to you all on that, but from what I have heard from guys like Williamson, not really.

Absolutely. Spencer Fano, Francis Mauigoa and Dillon Thieneman are legit candidates to be immediate starters and game-changers. Mauigoa would be the best OT on the Steelers since Villanueva.

Bit of history - no Steelers offensive tackle has ever been named All-Pro.

And if their performances have them picking top 10, they probably need more than the right quarterback to vault to contender status.

John Kolb?

We’ve had a few good ones. Seemed like Tunch should’ve been one

But definitely in need of a dominant tackle again, or at least a good one as the dominant ones get way too pricey after their rookie deal.

Max Starks, reminds me a a good one that held the Steelers hostage due to their own negligence to the position.

He made “franchise” bank for a couple years.

I think its very fair to say that perpetual living in the middle, doing enough to make the playoffs leads to mediocrity. That was the problem with Tomlin. Not bad enough for 6 or 7 wins. Not good enough to really contend. I also think though Ben earned the right. They hung in too long. That said, all of us get to play the long game. These guys live all week to win every game. And any less of that mentality leads to less then mediocrity.

I'd rather be drafting higher, too, but I once heard someone say it's now where you draft, it's who is doing the drafting. We got these in the 2nd half of the first:

Harmon 1.21
Fautanu 1.20
Watt 1.30 (ends 6-year drought on 1st rounders)
DeCastro 1.24
Heyward 1.31
Pouncey 1.18
Tone 1.25
Heeeeeeeath 1.30
Snack 1.19
Faneca 1.26
Eric Green 1.21

Obviously, a lot more misses in that time span.

The difference between 21 and 14 isn't significant. The Steelers could easily move up in the draft and still have mid-round picks to work with. The difference in the second round is basically meaningless. There's probably 20-30 prospects all around the same level at that point of the draft.

AS many teams have shown you don’t necessarily get him drafting early. Top QB picks fail quite often.

Current starters drafted 1.20 or after:

ARod, Dak, Dart, Love, Lamar, Hurts, Shough, Purdy, Gabriel.

Assuming Mendoza starts for Cousins in 2026.

Obviously you want a star like ARod or Lamar, half that list is meh or unproven.

A couple years old but interesting. these show just how bad the success rate is in the first round. I guess center is the best choice lol.

The chart is interesting but not surprising since the only centers or guards taken in the 1st round are guys who are simply too good to ignore. The WR failure rate is also not surprising since quite frankly, that position is filled with freaking headcases with vastly more athletic attributes than mental acuity.

Such a need position they often come in runs off the board and are over drafted as result. I expect this draft will be no different.

Excited to see our version of the west coast offense. Winning season or not.

These yaz loud and clear stillwright.!!!

I’m looking forward to seeing anything different than the same old crap that we have been seeing for a long long time. Yes, you read that right…….. i used consecutive “long” as in long long time.

Thanks for all your great post(s) along the way.

If you think QB success rate is bad in the first, wait until you see the % in the other rounds.

That’s why I think we need to keep swinging for the fence.

Allar in the 2nd isn’t out of reality, obviously the 1st of the 3rd picks would be better.
