Looking at our core players, will the Steelers get another ring before Ben retires?

A couple years back I felt that the Steelers had no chance to get another super bowl win with #7 on the roster. The playmakers on offense has me changing my tune....our team is a good draft/free agent away from being really good. What do you think....will Ben retire with only 2 rings or will he get a third or dare I say a fourth??

I think two things have to happen before Ben can accomplish either of those goals.
First the OL has to keep progressing, one or two more adjustments might just do it.
Second and probably most important, Bell ( or someone just like him ) has to continue to produce. A solid running game has saved Ben before.

The receivers are already in place and we need to keep them youngin's on defense corralled but there's always hope.

I say yes. In fact I think we're only a corner and a couple safety's away from doing it this year. We'll also have more cap space after this year that we'd had in a long time. Let's say we draft a good CB and Safety in the off-season, Shamarko starts getting better, and we somehow sign Greg Hardy. We're be a force with a nice young team to win for a long time.

I think He can, but it has to be within the next 3yrs. A lot of that talent on offensive will be ready to get paid. Browns next contract, Bell,Bryant, Wheaten. Plus DeCastro on the O-line. But what they really need is a Le'Veon Bell that they get through the draft for the Defense. whether that be LB, CB, DE, S, but they need stud.

It could happen. The defense may have just enough left to keep them in games. and if Ben and company can string together some playoff games like they did earlier in the year they just might be able to make a run for the championship. In the future we need lots on Defense and we are likely to lose a lot of talent that has nothing real noteworthy behind it.

No matter hard the league is attempting to change it, Ds still win championships - lesser so than before - but it still does. Manning and his ALL-TIME record offense STILL didn't change that trend last Super Bowl. The team with the best D won the ring. Other than Heath, our offense is a bunch of young guys in their prime and Ben is still in his prime too. The key is how fast can we fix the D? We have to hope and pray that the young, high draft picks pan out in Jones, Shazier and Tuitt. And they need to RACE to find a legit 3-4 NT - without one we simply won't be able to shut down the rush.. And they need 2 young, quality CB and at least 1 good safety. If we do those things, Ben can win another ring. If we missed on Jones, Shazier and Tuitt, we are in a hole.

Realistically, I don't think so. Defense always seems like a 1/2 to a step from being where they need to be and incredibly susceptible to big plays. We get Shazier to get that extra step and he ends up hurt after missing no games his last two years of college (I think). At least not significant time, anyway. Now, he is almost a year behind where he should be. I didn't want JJ, maybe he could be good, but injury has slowed him down too.

The team goes as Ben goes. If Ben plays average, I think the team can still pull out some good wins, but not THE big game. If he plays bad, no chance (see Jets/Saints). With Brown and Bell, Ben could play well and get the team deeper into the playoffs, but I don't know if the defense could hold out in the SB.

I say yes. I don't think this team is as bad as some think. I know they look terrible at times but I think they have done a good job of getting youth on the team while trying to remain competitive.

First off they must start getting production out of Jones, and Shazier. Get a quality CB & shore up the Defensive backfield & they are close.

The offense I think next year will be one or maybe the best in the league.

Two years and they make a serious run at it. JMO

I'm hoping that Ben sees he has a chance to be a part of history and decide that he has his money...he does, right??... and take a little less than he should so we can spread the cap out and ensure that he has all the bells and whistles for his new offense while we also add some to the defense.

hope against hope

I remember hearing or reading somewhere that he said he would if it came down to it and the Steeler ever wanted to part ways, so I think there's a good chance.

I am not sure it will be a money thing. I suspect we are getting to the time where Ben's body just starts breaking down. There is a lot of wear and tear on his throwing arm from the games in the past and when something like that starts breaking down it usually spells the end quick. We do not know how much time he has left, I am guessing 3 years would end it for him as far as quality play 5 years if he wanted to go out as a back up and stay with the team.

I'll say yes, but there are so many conditions needed for it to happen. Not the least of which is upgrading the defense and keeping the o-line together for continuity (I think at least 2 of them are coming close to the end of their contracts..Beachum and Decastro?) JMO

No. There isn't enough time to rebuild the defense even if Tombert did know what they were doing. Be another 25 years until another SB. That's why I hardly wear my swag from XL and XLIII.

If they address the secondary this off-season and address why we continue to under-perform (coaching is the common denominator), then we will win another SB with Ben.

Of course, but they really have to hit some home runs in the draft and find a diamond in the rough or 2. I'm pretty certain Ben can help us get another ring or 2. I'm certain one of his goals would have to be Super Bowl MVP. Another ring cements him in the HOF as well.

The offense has the talent in place, but they need the young players on defense to develop very quickly to make another run at it.

The problem is that there's not really any young talent at the key OLB and CB positions to get excited about. They probably need to acquire and/or develop two players at each position.

I have little if any confidence in Allen or Jones surprising to the upside.

We already knew that Tombert could assess and develop the offensive skills positions. The OL and the defense have always been issues for them.

Due to the incompetence of those two, the Steelers may be years away from having a decent defense.

The D needs to carry its wieght, we need playmakers at CB and a new SS

Winning or not even getting to the SB will have nothing to do with Ben's contract. He could be making $5 million a year and it won't help their drafting. If they had $20 in cap space today all they'd do is re-sign the players they already have. That's how they do business. They've never spent on high priced FAs and they won't start now. Synder and Jones have proved that you can't buy a championship. The Rooney's aren't about to try. The reason the defense sucks now is because they can't draft well enough to replace older players. Harrison, Keisel, Troy and Ike are well past their prime but they are still the best or close to the best players on the team.

I just watched a former player (can't think of his name) on the NFL channel break down the Steelers defense. He pointed out how Timmons is being fooled on play action at an alarming rate. 2 of the bungles TDs came because Timmons was faked out of his jock. He even tackled the RB while Dalton threw the ball behind him. He also showed Worilds biting so hard on Dalton's run that he was 10 yards away from him. You can't win games when your defense is this undisciplined. Luckily the bungles are a clusterfuck of a team and could screw up a wet dream.

Part of the reason I am advocating for changes to the coach and GM is because I don't think we're going to win another Super Bowl while Roethlisberger is still the Steelers quarterback.

If I believed we were headed in the right direction and could win a championship, I doubt I'd want to fire the GM and coach.

So could we win another championship? Sure, if the Rooneys took a risk, left the comfort of "average" that Colbert and Tomlin provide and maybe try to find a dynamic leader of this organization that could salvage and maybe lead the team to a title in the next 4 seasons.

I don't think we win another title with the status quo around here. Just my opinion.

Anything is possible in America !!!!! It seems our management / coaching has been wasting away Ben's carrer. How do you explain the sub standard OL we have had for so many years? It can happen and I truely want it to happen, but with our current staff, its doubtful. Take them to long, in what is left of Ben, to figure it out. Here's to a surprise and remember "anything can happen in America" !!!!!!!

I caught that as well. Playbook is a great show.

That was far from the first segment this season where they've highlighted deficiencies in the Steelers defense. In addition to what you alluded, they've also been biting on a ton of double moves in the secondary.

It's one thing to get beat due to lack of talent, which is obviously an issue, but they're rarely doing even the fundamental things rights, which reflects on the coaching.

My perspective exactly.

The current 8-5 record has done little to alleviate my concerns about the trajectory of the franchise. I just do not see another legit contender being built under Tombert's reign.

Look at Colbert specifically. I know Tomlin is mostly likely coaching the Steelers until his contract expires, at least, but between the totally wasted mid round picks on Landry Jones and Dri Archer and the contracts extended to Allen and Mitchell, in addition to many other egregious personnel **** ups, it's hard for me to think of a good reason why Colbert should remain as GM. I just don't see it.

I'm not seeing it. Everyone - well, most everyone - is optimistic after a solid win but we still have massive problems on defense that will take years to fix, possibly longer than Ben has left. I do not believe we are only one or two players away on defense. In addition, we will have Tomlin for at least two more wasted years and maybe longer if we put in a 9-7 season, even if we don't make the playoffs.

WHAT?

The offense is one if the best in the league. It's not going to get much better. For the Steelers to win another Super Bowl the defense needs to improve drastically.
