I do think it’s hilarious that the narrative of Mason has changed so dramatically. He went from one of the most hated players on the team to a viable option to start. I would have personally felt more confident about him starting this season if we had DK and GP at wide receiver. Personally feel that any NFL caliber quarterback would have some success with that WR room. I don’t like the fact we are pretty much handing over the starting role to him or Rodgers if signed. I wish we would have signed someone else for a reasonable price to give competition. But what is this board’s consensus on Mason if he ends up being the week 1 starter?

First off, Mason was never a most or even close to the most hated player on the team. Team mates loved him as evidence on how they came together for the 4-game run. They played hard from the get go once Mason was named starter and played hard all the way through the play off game until they saw how handcuffed the Tomlin turned things (not Mason’s fault).

On this message board, most here did not hate him but merely seen him for what he was………. A Back-up, which was justified to that point of his career.

Time has passed and the Tomlin has backed us into a geriatric pursuit once again. Many here want Red Nose to start more so to see just what we have in a QB. If he has taken that step up and produces, I’m all for it.

As we are progressing in our QB search, the geriatrics are no advancement of any kind……… it’s just a play to secure the Non-Losing Season.

Building a QB / Developement / starter takes risk and continual use of potential candidates to determine what you have.

DIC nailed it.

I always thought he got a bad hand dealt him. Ben never seemed to like him, and they had little to do with each. He played well enough when in that four game streak.

The problem is not Mason. The problem is the leadership. Even if we sign Rogers, the issues will come out, and I would not be surprised to see Rogers and Tomlin his issues of conflict coming up. It won't take long for Rogers to see how lame Tomlin is, and the conflict will escalate, probably to the point of going public.

Mason has some skills. Let's see him use them. Still, Will Howard is probably our future. Hopefully he will have the good fortune of not wasting years under Tomlin, as Ben had to.

I like Rudolph, gunslinger just like Bubby! I prefer to not have Rodgers, but he brings a ton of experience and can win if healthy. I agree, the bigger problem is the WR room. They have to have weapons to throw too, that might be the hold up with Rodgers too. Why would he sign with a weak pass block, a kindergarten scheme :) and nobody to throw it too? If anybody would point out how bad our offense runs, you would think that he would and have some minimum demands, silly things like having wide receivers. As far as Mason, I think he has an opportunity to show out and be a leader. He might want to become best friends with the veteran DB's.....go over tape with them.

I think there were three sides.
1. He sucked and wasn’t more than a 3rd stringer.
2. Was given a fair shake and at best was a backup.
3. Hadn’t been given a fair shot.

I’m for whoever wins the starting job legitimately. Currently, I don’t believe Rudolph has the competition to make this a challenge. Furthermore, I think just signing A-a-ron and handing him the starting job is a mistake as well. At this point I’d sign Wentz and move on. Not like he’s a ton of competition but more than Howard would supply year one.

Unfortunately, that’s what we have become. Live in our fears, play not to lose, get .500 and maybe sneak into the playoffs to just get throttled by a legitimate contender.

My worry is they consider this a throw away season hoping to secure a top QB in the draft being held in Pittsburgh. I mean throwing out a top young receiver for what he’ll end up bringing in as a compensatory pick is a red flag. And if this is the plan I hope in at least involves firing Tomlin once and for all. But in that case why not trade Watt, Heyward, etc and just load up.

I guess in short I don’t think this team knows wtf they are doing.

Everyone thinks Ben didn't like Mason because the Steelers drafted him in round 3 instead of getting a player that could help immediately. The reason Ben never helped him or seemed to like him was because after Mason was drafted he was asked by a reporter, what's it going to be like getting to learn from a future HOF QB and 2 time Super Bowl champion QB. Mason said something along the lines of, it's not Ben's job to teach me anything, came across pretty cocky, so that's how Ben treated him, it wasn't hit job to help him.

Seems to me that is the antithesis of cocky. That is acknowledging it isn't Ben's job to babysit.

I'm kind of interested in something about the Farve-Rodgers-Love line of QBs. Did you ever notice they kind of move or moved similarly in the pocket? Different arm angles when throwing. Is that taught? Seems like it might be because they all do/did the same type of things. I'd like that to rub off on any Steeler QB that might be in the room with Rodgers.

When asked what it's going to be like being around a HOF QB and what you can learn from him, and you just blow it off and act like you could care less and you don't need him to teach you anything, that's cocky. Look at how Harmon is with Heyward, saying he can't wait to learn from him, he's going do everything he can to learn from a guy like that.
Look how Herbig was with Watt, young guys come in every season and say how great it'll be to learn from these great players, not Mason, he had nothing to learn.
The part no one ever talks about is Ben called Mason and welcomed him to the team before that, but that doesn't fit the usual narrative towards Ben, so it's swept under the rug.

All comes back to what Tomlin allows on offense. If we do the same old same old....more of the same old.....but if Tomlin opens up the offense schematicly and philosophically.......well....

In the end though we have issues on the defense side schematicly and philosophically also. Chances of Tomlin evolving on both sides of the ball in one offseason is miniscule.

You are making something out of nothing here with this.

What other someone else is there of any real value? We tried to resign Fields for a reasonable amount, other than that the pickings were slim.

I think one would drastically help the other. I don't think the defensive scheme is all that broken personally, I think it is mostly or at worst partially the product of the offensive ineffectiveness. When the conservative play works and we hold the ball, the defense plays lights out. When it doesn't the defense is forced on to the field to often and without a lead. That changes the scheme calls by default.

You are making something out of nothing here with this.
Yeah, but as proved in this post, almost anytime Mason is brought up, someone brings up the fact Ben didn't treat him well, I only posted about it because someone else mentioned it.

Fields was tomlins dream qb. A running qb with a scattershot arm. But he put russ in because...pedigree. Fields rotted. I'm glad he left. Tomlin has mismanaged his qb's. Looks like he's doing it again.

There is no pressure on Mason as he’s viewed as a career backup spot starter in the NFL. Not a bad living for a late twenty something multi millionaire laughing all the way to the bank.
If he ends up being the starter I would expect maybe six or seven wins mostly because of the defense and beating the lesser teams, that’s all.
Mason seems like a really nice young man, great team guy, works hard, mentors the rookie Howard. Just a great guy to have on your team but as your back up.
Rodgers is not the same QB even as he was five years ago. He has little mobility and behind a not so great OL will be sacked a ton and hurried.
I think with him you may squeak out 9-10 wins and maybe back into the playoffs but then it gets real ugly fast.
So what have you gained with Rodgers? Finishing in the mushy middle once again which will make it that much more difficult to move up next years’ draft.
Stupid to sign him! Look at the big picture and go with Mason as the starter for this season.

I’m just saying a veteran or a guy with upside. We tried Fields and he moved on. What about Trey Lance if we want a talented former high pick that’s still young? 2 million isn’t a big investment. Kyle Trask who was neck and neck with Baker when they battled it out. 2.875m is reasonable. Mac Jones is making 4.2m this season. I know a lot of people were high on him coming out of Bama. How about a veteran like Flacco at 4.2m or Brissett at 6.2m?

Yeah, not a lot of young studs as Darnold was the best option and too expensive. But rarely do teams let franchise quarterbacks walk. I’m just talking some competition for Ruddy.

I agree with this somewhat, but our D relies on turnovers alot. How many times were they bailed out by a fumble or int. With that being said you can make your own breaks to an extent, but having to rely on that is not ideal. The D needs to be more aggressive and set up properly to counter whoever they are playing. Like no 2 DL against the Ravens for example. Blitz more, take some chances etc etc
