So the theme seems to be that the reason for the measles outbreak is those bad parents who don't have their children immunized. So while it seems that vaccination is the prudent thing to do, here is the backdrop -

What’s sad about this – tragic, really – is that we eliminated measles from the U.S. in the year 2000, thanks to the measles vaccine. As this CDC graph shows, we’ve had fewer than 100 cases every year since.

But we had 644 cases in 27 states in 2014, the most in 20 years. And 2015 is already on track to be worse. Measles may become endemic in the U.S, circulating continually, thanks to the increasing numbers of unvaccinated people. Until now, each outbreak was caused by someone traveling from abroad and bringing measles to us. The anti-vaccine movement has turned this public health victory into defeat.

So what changed in 2014? We know at least this -
“We don’t know exactly how this outbreak started but we do think it was likely a person infected with measles overseas,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday.

“We assume that someone got infected with measles overseas, visited Disneyland park, and spread the disease to others,” Schuchat added.

So what happened in 2014 that introduced a statistically significant increase in the risk...

Pretty obvious conclusion. It isn't the government's fault for letting all those kids in. That just happened. Forget about it. We need to focus on the parents not getting their kids immunized. How long before it is a federal law now? I will go out on a limb and say sometime in the next 18 months.

It is pretty irresponsible to not get certain vaccinations. I know there is a pretty large contingent of "They put Mercury and Cyanide in all vaccinations to turn us into mindless zombies so the government can control our thoughts" people on here but it is prudent to be vaccinated against certain things like measles. Or you will have an illness that was basically extinct in the U.S. on the verge of making a big comeback, like what is happening here basically.

It's the ******* hipster doofus parents thinking new world holistic medicine is the way to go. Along with their organic, gluten free, vegan diets.

People come here from overseas all the time, both legally and illegally, and people who live here visit other countries and come back. The government cannot eliminate that.

Sure, and we've been fine until this event. I see a correlation between the hundreds of thousands of illegal and unscreened immigrants practically escorted in last year from South America and this outbreak.

A measles outbreak only takes one infected person in an unvaccinated population. It's an incredibly contagious disease. It is airborne and can lives for hours on surfaces. One does not have to be showing symptoms to transmit it to others. 90% of unvaccinated people who are exposed to it will become infected.

Additionally, from what I've heard these clusters of unvaccinated kids in California are in wealthy, educated areas with high rates of "personal belief exemptions".It's not the poor immigrants who aren't vaccinating.

Are you saying poor immigrants are vaccinated at a higher rate than Californians?

Clearly we must force vaccinations on these rich people's children.

Did I say that? I don't support forced vaccination, I don't think many people do. I support educating people about their erroneous assumptions. It seems to be your contention that letting foreigners into the country is the root of the measles outbreak, and that's inaccurate. Even if patient zero is an illegal immigrant, you don't get an "outbreak" without clusters of unvaccinated people. I oppose illegal immigration for a variety of reasons, but America currently has lower vaccination rates than Mexico and many central American countries. You can't pin this one on them.

If you don't want to vaccinate your kid, that's fine, just keep him out of the public schools. When we have 10-50% of kids at a school going unvaccinated, it becomes a public health issue. If the government has any legitimate powers or interests, keeping dangerous childhood diseases out of public schools is certainly one of them.

That must be it, all those South American kids acted poor coming across the border, when they really had their eyes set on Disneyland.
That must have been a long walk for them, particularly when they had the measles, but I'm sure Disneyland was worth it.

You can't be this stupid... oh wait.. yes you can. Your post are so juvenile I can't believe you are an adult. My wife is from California and I've been to Cali many times. It is flooded with illegals. They go to PUBLIC school where they infect more illegal or even anchor baby kids that haven't been vaccinated. It isn't just the South American kids, it's ALL illegals. This is why you need a real border. To stop this ****. So now American kids are at risk because a bunch of river jumpers are now flooding the border. Just like the Americans that are being killed every ******* year by illegals that the feds refuse to deport. They commit a lot of crime and this administration, for political reasons only, won't stop it.

Illegal immigrants can transmit disease, legal immigrants can transmit disease. United States citizens who travel to other countries can transmit disease...the idea that we can, without vaccines, protect against measles outbreaks by securing the border is not supported by any kind of science or facts.

Once again, I totally support securing the border from illegal immigration for a variety of other reasons, but it is not a solution to outbreaks of measles or any other disease. There will always be people coming and going between countries, unless your're talking about REALLY restricting our freedoms.

**** Hell, look how the mumps is running rampant through the NHL. How do you explain that?

The thing is we stop immunizations against a certain disease simply because we had ELIMINATED it here. The thing is we forget that it isn't eliminated everywhere else and that international travel is now easier than at any other time in human history. This is why the State Department publishes travel advisories on what shots you need before going to certain regions of the world. Its really a combination of all the things that have been mentioned thus far. My thoughts are if you don't want to vaccinate your kids because you read where Jenny McCarthy posted they cause autism on the intrawebz that's fine. Just be prepared to home school or pony up the dough for a private school where they aren't required.

All the Mexican and south American hockey players that have been flooding the league lately. When will they put a stop to it?

We had eliminated it here due to herd immunity. When the vast majority are immune, a random infection with the virus that could be brought from overseas is basically stopped in its tracks. The "chain" of infection is broken. Once you get a substantial percentage of unvaccinated people, especially clusters of unvaccinated people, you get outbreaks. When large numbers of people start becoming infected, you then put the small percentage for whom the vaccine is ineffective, as well as babies and those with illnesses who can't get the vaccine. So this is about more than just someone's freedom, it's about public health. I still don't think the government should be able to force you to put something in your body you don't want to, but I do think it has an interest in influencing and encouraging you to do it.

Just wait till the lawyers get involved. Not only are the anti-vacinate people putting their kids and themselves health at risk, but their financial health will be sorely tested too.

we all know that poor people go to Disney more than anyone. And yes I am serious. My neighbors that lost a car to the repo man and then got booted out of their home....yup first paycheck after that mess and they were off to Disney! Yay look at me, I'm super poor but I want what u got! Unfortunately I think the Mexicanos have the same mentality.

BTW- their kid always has the coolest new laptop and new Jordans. My kids suffer with a 3 year old ipod and a good meal on the dinner table.

I am thankful that as of now, vaccines like the flu are optional. I have applied at places that as a condition of employment, require the flu shot. I rescinded my application. I hate that kids are mandated to get the chicken pox vaccine. It's unnecessary. The whole HPV Gardasil vaccine. Not needed. Yet parents think that it's OK to inject their kids with every toxin known to mankind to stop diseases that really aren't that deadly. Contagious, yes, but not deadly.

Our thoughts are also with the measles-ravaged country America. I hope we are screening them before they come to Africa.

I fully expect federal legislation mandating certain vaccinations. Not a stretch for flu shots to be the next target.
