MIA........... injured Highsmith leads team in sacks

I hear everything you are saying jitter, my concern was for the last 6 games. He has been fairly silent.

I also said I’m not panicked yet, meaning that sacks / stats come in spurts.

I’m more worried about how the scheme / game plan takes him out as much as opposing players do.

Nick Herbig coming off a hamstring injury played more defensive snaps than Watt Sunday. WTF???

More Tomlin bs! Some of these players are getting close to their expiration dates. Cam 36, Watt 31,Ramsey 31. The age catches up to everyone and it’s showing now with these guys.
TJ is not the same player he was and you can see it on full display.
On top of that these teams know how to neutralize him now but Tomlin isn’t doing anything to overcome that. One thing Tomlin could do is call for more blitzes or even move him around like I thought they might do. That’s my opinion!
Totally disagree on Watt. His run defense grade is off the charts. They run away from him like 93% of the time. He isn’t doing anything wrong and is still great. It is everyone else. He can’t do it alone when no one else gets attention.

What the HellA is that all about ?

Injured / still holding in / there is a lot that is going on behind the scenes that we will never know anything about, especially when we have a riddle cliche man in charge.

Then you have to force teams to pay attention to other people. The Sawyer sack was great, they lined Sawyer up inside Watt, 3 guys slid to Watt allowing Sawyer a free run at the QB, Sawyer didn't beat anyone, keep doing those things and teams can't constantly shift 3 guys to Watt, or their QB is going to get killed. Harrison isn't quite on Watt's level, close, but teams rarely full on double teamed him because they couldn't afford to because there was going to be a blitz coming from anywhere at anytime.

I’m listened to Mike Defabo and he’s saying exactly what some of us have been saying here.
Move Benton out of the NT and kick him to the outside to DE. He said he’s not a NT. That is what I’ve been screaming about. He said put Black in at NT. Couldn’t agree more.
Ekuele or Black, rotate, improve

You can disagree, totally fine with it.
TJ is getting paid to rush the passer and disrupt the passing game. Sacks, pressures, strip sacks.
Yes, fine with TJ’s run defense since he’s the only one.
Tomlin is not helping him. Move him around, create and call more blitzes. This will help TJ especially as he ages.
No sacks in six straight games and five in his last 17 games. Not good!
The fact that two things are big red flags here.
First, the run defense is horrible and that does not help TJ.
Second, he’s getting chipped by multiple guys. OC’s know how to neutralize him. Tomlin if he would call blitzes, move TJ around would benefit him.

He had the QB sacked in this game until he threw the ball at TJ, lucky TJ did not catch it. He did get a sack last week, but they ruled it a TFL. He is continuing to get TFL's. He did move around some. They were more creative but simply undermanned after the injuries. We are also giving up quick throws to the middle at an extremely high rate and that alone negates TJ more than anything without there being a damn thing he can do about it until they stop it. They need to get healthy and or get the new safety up to speed. Every single player in the secondary this week was not on the team last year. It takes a while to become cohesive with that much change.

I hear ya! Will add that this is Tomlin’s defense and it’s on him to fix these issues. I don’t buy the new player excuses though. All teams incorporate new players every year. I think it’s about putting your guys in the best position to succeed.
Give you an example of what I’m referring to.
Both Queen and Wilson who both are lightweights for playing inside should not be playing together. Either player should be paired with a thumper. Cole Holcomb or an Elandon Robert’s type player.
They are both getting completely mauled by these guards and fullbacks.
Then you have Benton at NT! Bad idea since he’s not stout enough to play that position. Play him at the DT and move Black to NT. He’s a big, thick mountain of a man and would be perfect at NT.

The Ravens defense started out terribly last year. They had new players and had to find the best fit. It took time. This defense has time to get it together.

The Ravens consistently have decent DCs and a HC with some defensive acumen…and they had the Steelers offense as a “get right” game to send the defense off in the right direction.

Maybe Tomlin should have the defense tee off on the offense in the bye week to get right…although they had all camp/preseason to tee off on em and still came out like a steaming pile of trash…they just started a bunch of talk like they were gonna be special.

For a bunch of guys that like to talk as much as this defensive unit does how are there always “communication issues”.

Must be nobody listens, they’re all just yappin’

All this is combined in the statement of “piss poor coaching”.

It all adds up regardless of the excuses.

I hear what you are sayin SIR, but one big difference is that they have better coaching from top to bottom. The ineptitude in our organization is spread far and wide, top to bottom.

the excuses have run dry, every year an excuse that delays the justification of coaching ability. Eventually it has to be accepted that we just have poor coaching, many teams have replaced and thrived on coaching changes as part of the business. The owners have more than satisfied any kind of rule, more than satisfied the patience part of stability in coaching…….. why not the change ?

Never a losing season matched with never an advancement in team success.

So what was the defense's excuse last year when we didn't have new players? And the year before that, or every year we've been the highest paid defense in the NFL? This is what happens when your HC comes out and says this defense is going be so good, it's going to be historic.

Here’s the thing Coryea, I think excuses and scheme have caught up with them. Everyone is tired of the excuses and most are to polite to mention the scheme / coaching g.

I saw a clip of one of the greatest Steelers to play the game, James Harrison, laughing at this current defense. He and Joe Haden were talking and Harrison named off some stats for this current defense”D” and he was laughing at how they need to get it fixed and soon.

I’m pretty sure he held back due to his respect for the Steelers Franchise & Rooney, but he wanted to BLAST the scheme and the coach.

If they lose in NE and the defense once again looks bad you will be able to smell the fire burning under Terrell Austin. Somebody has to be the scapegoat and you know who it won’t be.
I don’t think Austin is a very good coordinator and never have dating back to his days with the Lions and Bengals but as we all know, he’s not running anything. This defense is strictly the work of Professor Tomlin.

More than just multiple sometimes triple.

They should have brought in a new DC this offseason, they failed miserably.

Well hello there Mr. Optimist, glass half full, you must have just awoke from a long coma. :ROFLMAO: Let me get you caught up, m'kay?

1. First and foremost, the Steelers defense no longer changes anything, makes adjustments, or scheme to weakness. Seattle and the Jets scored on the same exact play because the Steelers lined up the same damn way on both plays. Morons
2. They run a 2-4-5 base defense and can't figure out why they can't stop the run
3. The 100Million dollar man is getting a lot of attention and they fail to move him around consistently.
4. Peyton Wilson can't shed blocks, hit, or handle a sunny day for that matter. Heat exhaustion, pfffftttt...It's called getting your *** kicked.
5. Without Highsmith, Herbig can't set the edge...he's too light and weak.
6. With five DB's as a base D, you think the middle of the field wouldn't be wide open for crossers, but they are.
7. On the same note, why play your corners so far off of the WR's that they get a free release inside?
8. Tomlin is making excuses at his pressers instead of demanding solutions, but then again, see point number 1.

Signed,

The Pessimist, glass is frigg'n empty, guy

Remember the 2016 AFCCG at NE, NE ran some reverse flea flicker play or something, and after the game Tomlin said I've never seen them do that before, when NE ran that exact play a month earlier vs Baltimore. The amount of players that have come out and made comments about the Steelers defense and or Tomlin, I'm not sure how anyone can even try to defend this guy anymore. Edelman saying we run the same defense all the time, Ben saying Tomlin never had a plan B because he never thought they'd need one.

I don't agree on 1,2,4 and don't give **** about press conferences. 3 they did start to move him around and use 3 OLB but injuries curtailed that quickly. Wilson doesn't shed great, but he shouldn't have to consistently. The problems while seemingly similar to last year are also different in many ways. When and if we get the lineman starting, we planned on starting hopefully the ILB's will get less traffic. The DBs on the field this week were all new starters who didn't play a down together last year. I will wait to see what happens there.

The glass is always half full. Even if we suck this year, it just sets us up for the draft next year.

Just remember the goal is simple DIC

This year matters not

It’s all about the magic 210 number

We can only hope Mikey gets there in two seasons rather than three as our GHD purgatory will remain in full effect no matter how futile the coaching until the total rolls to that magic number 210

This is 100 what complacency by a long tenured employee with zero fear of ever losing their job looks like. Take as many breaks as ya want, give whatever production level ya want, use up all your vacation days, come in late, leave early…hell sleep in your office if ya want as long as ya show up every day and clock in and out that is literally ALL that is required. Results matter not, just be a body.

It's getting to the point that I have to question if it even matters. I think the Steelers are drafting well, but after impressive rookie seasons, we are seeing regression with far too many draft picks.
