When they traded for him I was on the fence, actually leaning towards it was a bad move considering Ben was out we were heading for a top 6 pick. Turned out as a very good move especially considering his age (only 25 now) and entering his prime playing years.

Compare Fitzpatrick to the second highest paid safety Jamal Adams (strong safety I know), not even close to who I would take. And take into consideration that Seattle gave up two firsts and a third for Adams who played college at LSU. That ranks up their with the other Louisiana Purchase of one party stupidity.

Good move. Outside of Watt and Cam, Minkah is the next best defender and a last line of defense against a group of linebackers and DBs who struggled last year. Love that this deal was done early and ahead of a couple of monster safety contracts on the horizon. His "highest paid" tag may not live very long.

I felt exactly the same as you at the time and agree with you now. However,I do think he needs to be paired with quality corner play or his position can be easily negated by scheme.

Nice! Glad that’s out of the way. Need the Wizard of Boz signed long term. Then maybe something with DJ.

No question, I don't think it's a coincidence that our best safties had that. Shell and Wagner had Blount, Thomas. Lake and Perry had Woodson. Troy, Hope/Clarke had Taylor. That's a pattern that is probably league wide for Super Bowl contending teams. Having a top safety and corner improves both players immensely.

Not being a smart-*** when I ask this. But, do we even know what the scheme will be this year? I mean, it seems likely that Austin will want to put his stamp on some things. And with him coming from a background of coaching the secondary, that would seem the most obvious place. Add in Flores' input. I think there's a chance that we see some new wrinkles this year.

I think they will continue to mix up the defense depending on what offenses are showing. I expect a three S look in certain situations.

Overly simplified but if you pay a largely stay at home deep safety and you have ****** corners where would you throw?

Of course you throw at the corners. But, where's the evidence that the corners on the roster this year ****?
Also, there was an article over at DKs that made a lot of sense. With the addition of Kazae (sp), a largely stay at home deep safety, we may see more three safety sets from the Steelers this year. Allowing Minkah to play more of a free lance/rover style.
What I don't get is that folks look at the roster and coaching changes and think everything is going to be the same as years past. (yeah, I know ... "But Tomlin .. blah, blah, blah"). I just don't think it will ... for better or worse.

From a weak situation through free agency to a solid Safety group with minkah, kazee, Edmunds and Norwood. All of them with good hands except for edmunds
