It was that kind of day to open the week. You know, the kind of Monday that makes you just want a cold beer or so. And by so, I mean like 9. Seems to be a carry over from last week, cuz I had that feel everyday last week culminating in Saturday night when Windows 10 update took 4 hours forcing me to watch the Steelers game on my phone. Make no mistake, the V40 think Q has a pretty good screen, but 6.3 inches! That might be good enough for an average woody, but not a freakin' football game. Not a Steelers game anyway. So, here I am with beer AND NFL replay package (I cut the "cord" on DTV and Cable so this is how I get my thrill). I figure, why not share with the cool peeps here at Steelers Nation. In otherwords, if only the cool peeps can read it. If you aren't cool you have to stop reading now. Right now. As in, immediately. (of course, I'm not cool, so that means I may be spewing verbiage without reading so expect lots of typos and such. The grammar nazi's can go ahead and exit stage right-the-****-over-there).

Look - I dunno where this is going. First time me, first time you. But I am watching the replay, drinking beer, and posting my thoughts as I go. I may watch one play 20 times and others I may just catch once. So there it is. If'n there is something you want me to keep an eye out for - sing out and I will see what I can do to oblige.

Kickoff in 3...2...1...****, rain delay. damn...

Interesting opening formation on the first play - an off tackle run by conner, but the front is:

X-----------------T--G--C--G--T------Y
--------Z------------------------------U

where U is TE - McDonald and Y is TE Grimble.
Ace backfield - simple 26 run play

Both Grimble and McDonald appeared to get up field after the LB rather than deal with the DE on the off tackle run. Conner gets 3 yards, but my guess is they were supposed to start with the double team on the DE then one was supposed to slide off and pick put he LB. Looks like both tried to go to second level. Could have been miscommunication or just missed assignment. By the way Grimble fires off, I think he was supposed to have the OLB.

BTW - I use play design and terms I learned playing and what I learned coaching. They may not match what other use.

Well ****. My second play post got eaten by the ethernet. Short version:

First play X's block was okay.
Second play is the same 26 run but Vance motions to the Nasty Split rather than lingin up there. The nasty split is the wide gap between RT and Y reciever (grimble).
Foster leads the play this time though and destroys the ILB tryign to scrape through traffic.

Same 26 run, different looks/blocking.

:rockon:Good JOB Hoot and love your enthusiasm. array on and get that beer punt up, as long as you are home and not driving that is.............

:towel:

Salute the nation

Hoot, can you cast your phone to your TV? I've heard you don't necessarily have to have Chromecast to do it. Have heard Hulu does it and that you can do it from Samsung phones as well (not sure how but I'm sure a quick Google search will tell you).

And carry on.

Third play is pretty traditional pro formation:

X-----------------------T--G--C--G--T-U
----------Z--------------------------------------------Y
---------------------------------1
-------------------------------------2

Y is JuJu.

Rudolph's pass is a little to far on the back shoulder of JuJU and we go to punt.

I am off for a quick beer trip - fridge downstairs.

I havent looked into slinging my phone to my TV. Seems unhealthy for both the phone and the TV (not to mention my wallet). Be a great video on You Tube though.
@DIC - at home. I never drink and drive. Ever.

On to the punt...pretty mundane. Dangerfield down there fast on the coverage though.

Over to defense. KC opens empty backfield set.

TJ Watt lined up with hand in the dirt and Dupree upright on the line. Both come. Tyler M keeps the pass to Kelce in front of him and makes the stop after the catch.

On the other side, Burns and Edmunds handle the cross by the recievers well. Mahomes never looks anywhere but Kelce.

Next play, KC goes empty set again. Hilton shows blitz and comes. he is picked up by their RT, but that leaves their RG matched with TJ. That isn't even close - TJ owns that cat and flushed Mahomes.

SOrry for the sluggishness between posts. I am watching each play several times. This is concerning...Burns gave an 8 yard cushion at the snap. He is watching Mahomes and does not appear to check the WR. 11 (robinson) who stutter steps and turns at 3 yards looking for the ball. If Mahomes isn't flushed, that is an each pitch and catch with 11 in wide open space. Coulda been a big gainer.

A for Watt and Hilton.
D- for Burns.

Mahomes got the first on the scramble. Looks like KC saw what I saw with Burns. Next play is an Ace formation (single back). Burns gives 8 yard cushion at the line but this time it is Tyreke Hill. Mahomes goes right at Hill (and burns). Artie comes up and makes a nice tackle.

A for Burns.
Seeing that, I gotta upgrade Burns grade on the last one from D-. Looks like this they playing it this way. Still don't like that he stared down Mahomes.

Second and 4. Ace formation by KC.

-----------------x---------------T--G--C--G--T-----------Y
------Z-----------------------U
------------------------------------------1---2

D-front change:
Hargrave in a "neck" technique. Not a full tilt but lined up like his target is the Neck of the center, but he ends up doing a little stunt (game) to the defensive right. Only 2 down linemen - nickle package I assuem but can't tell from camera angle (need the all 22s)

Burns up tight - only 3 yard pad.

pass targets Hill but overthrown. He is well booked by Nelson and Edmunds but if Mahomes drops it in there, its a first down. Mahomes floats it because of a beast named Watt (lined up in 3point stance and gets pressure).

3rd and four, KC run a Twins on both sides with an ace back. In my opinion, one of the hardest formations for the defense to deal with...here is what it looks like:

---------------X----------T-G-C-G-T-----U
----Z---------------------------------------------Y
----------------------------------1---2

Little bit of west coast "brown" look. So, note the "nasty" split KC has happening here between RT and U (TE). Our DE (Watt) has to decide to line up in the gap or on the outside shoulder of the TE. He stays in the Nasty split with B (barron) picking up U.

-----------------------------------------------B
----C---------S--------E--T----N------E*---------C
---------------X----------T-G-C-G-T-----U
----Z------------------------------------------------Y
----------------------------------1---2

I put a * by Watt in the text above. I will have to work out a text nomenclature for y'all.

U drops to block (TJ is a ******* beast coming upfield). The use Y to try and clear out burns to make space for the Ace back on a little wheel route to the Offensive Right. Barron sniffs it out and leaves U to block and picks up the RB route. Great coverage with help over top by 38. Back catches that, 38 belts him.

sorry so slow. Been a while since I broke down film and the pause/backup technology is limited.

Beer run then back at it.

back with a chocolate chip cookie and a cold beer. Looked athe punt then backed up to the previous third down play to see Dupree. He slanted inside on a little game and Cam tries to stunt around him. Dupree hits the T-G double team before T peels off to pick up Cam on the stunt. Cam hit the OT and drove him back. Cam is one strong human.

Punt is what it is. Dionte fields it with little room to work and gets tackled after short gain.

so first KC series was interesting to see how Burns gave big cushion on first 2 plays and then KC comes back to that side, but Steelers had adapted and tightened him up. For the series, I give Watt an A, Burns an A and Butler an A. Tyler M is playing ILB and does what he does, but man Bush is so much faster.

back to offense. Open standard Pro Set with JuJu doing a little motion near the TE:

----U-T-G-C-G-T--------Y
---Z--------------------------X
-------------1--2

I know, the U, X, Y, Z terms are probably a bit off...been a while like I said. Anyway, I need to do this in a graphics program so I can draw the routes....on this one, "U" (Vance) drags underneath the Backers from left to right. He gets the pass but fumbles (out of bounds) while turning up field. This is fine, but the game within the game is on the left side. JuJu (Z) clears the field with what appears to be a skinny post (camera angles hard to tell) giveing Conner space in the flat as the outlet. Ball already out to Vance though as it should have been - he was primary read.

flipping the formation strength from Right to left on the follow up 2 and 5:

X-------------T--G--C--G--T--U
------Y--Z
-----------------------1--2

Ball is on the right hash and the play is a little swing pass to Conner on that side (short side) of the field. "U" (vance) slips upfield to make a decent block, but Conner bobbled the ball a bit...the one he did the basketball between the legs ball exchange. Pass blocking up front by OL was fine.

Away from the ball (which fans often don't watch), Switz is in Z as labeled above and goes on a quick slant. I can't see the numbers for X and Y. X showing deep route while Y showing skinny post maybe. Hard to tell from cam angle. Just a note to see how the offense unfolds later.

Conner's little hoops like ball handling results in a first down (but maybe more if he catches it clean). Next play is a little bunch set to the left:

--X---T--G--C--G--T-----------Y
Z---U
---------------1---2

Play is a little gut run to Conner to the 2 or 4 hole. Call it a 22 dive.
Vance at U keeps the DE out of the playback side.
JuJu at Z and Switz at X. They start with a double team on the backside OLB and JuJu peels off for the CB.
On Playside, Chucks is at OT and gets a solid block on the DE.
Moncrief is Y and clears the CB out with the threat of a deep route.
Solid 3 yard pickup by Conner.

2cnd and 7
Sticking with the Nasty formation concept - left side for the nasty though...

-------U----T--G--C--G--T-------------Y
-----Z--X
----------------------1--2

I should probably change my Z and X designations. It will take a bit of time for me to pick up the Playbook and get more consistant. JuJu at Z in above and Switz at X.

anyway - Chucks at RT gets a solid block and 2 (conner) picks up the blitzing backer nicely. Dobbs sidesteps to the left due to the blitz, but overthrows the reciever (JuJu) on the sideline. JuJu looks like he wanted a PI call but he is out of screen for a bit and I don't see the actual contact. I can see his point may be valid as he is out of bounds when the pass comes. Maybe pushed a bit.

@crimson - glad to hear it! I am too.

3rd and 7. Standard Pro formation...

X----------------U--T--G--C--G--T-----------------Y
----------Z
------------------------------1---2

10 in the slot (z), X is JuJu. I thnk Moncrief at Y.
Conner (2) moves like he is to pick up blitz again, but with no blitz coming tries to drift to outlet position undneath backers. He isn't close to open.
Doesn't matter though. Chucks gets whipped by the DE and MR is dropped for the sack.

good think I had a fresh beer.

BTW - beer at my house is considerably cheaper that at the the stadium.

To be fair, it was Okufur at DE that whipped Chucks. That is a pretty good DE.
Punt angled to the offensive right and out of bounds. First guy in position to make the play....Burns.

Chiefs open with a tight formation up front and a deep TB. Classic Ace formation with QB under center rather than "Pistol" with Back offset to one side.

Steelers defense shows 8 in the box with TJ upright for the first time. For the purposes of keeping this easier for my readers (all 3 of you), I am going to call the ROLB (Dupree) "W" for Will and TJ "S" for strong. If it comes up $ for strong safety and F for Free safety. We kosher? Kewl. Keep in mind, drawing in playbook is a bit different than pulling it off slowmo screen where numbers can be hard to pickup. So, PB nazi's....exit stage right the **** over there....grammer police are in the green room with coffee and donuts waiting for you.

So only two classic DL on this play. KC been passing so not surprising.
-----------------F-------------X---------C
---------------------B
-----------C---------------M---$
---------------W--T---N------S
----------X----T-G--C--G--T---U---Y
-----------------------1--------------Z
-
-
-
-----------------------2

the KC Z man motions to the T--U gap, Barron (M) rolls over to pick up the pass threat.
Tuitt is line up at N
Dupree gets upfield F-A-S-T and stops any chance of the TB kicking to the outside. Good on Dupree!
Tuitt and I DT (I think Cam) plug up the running lanes and Tyler M (B) is clean to make the tackle.

Next play is interesting....at least for me. The big wrinkle is that TJ is hand in the dirt, but he is line out wide playing Run Force rather than what I would call "anchor". That is a bit hard to describe without a white board. Basically, "Force" man sets the edge against the run. He can be DE, OLB, Safety, or CB. Just depends on the D. Force man keeps the play from bouncing outside. He channels the play to the Anchor man and the pursuit LBs.

Anchor's job is basically (very basically) to stay home and clog the off tackle run. This leaves the trailing Backer to pickup any cutbacks. It makes a little triangle....

-----------------B-----
---------------------------A------------F

-------------R

In this strawman, R is the running back moving left to right. Force turns him inside. Anchor is clogging the lane and B stops the cutback and helps A with clean up the run. hopefully that made sense.

So here, KC plays a little motion game along iwth a formation that is "strong" to the short side of the field (on the left hash). Something like:

----------------------$-------------F
----------------------------W-----------------------C
C---B-----------X----B--N---T--------S

------X------------T--G--C--G--T--U
Z---
-------------------------2--1
----------------H

This is a little decieving because H actually motions left to right in front of QB (1) and then hooks around behind 1 and 2 on the motion. H above shows where he is at snap.

Hopefully the highlight worked to show the defense. Cam K is $ and Davis at F. Yes, W (Dupree) is lined up over the middle with Tyler M at B on the LoS. TJ is hand on the ground at S and split wider like I said.

So this took toom uch time, but I am learning the Steeler Defense scheme. Been a while like I said.

Dupree is active follwoing the H motion but comes back to make the play on 2 (hill) who hits the 2 hole. You know how else is in on the tackle? Burns. Good on him.

Last play was good for a first. Upfront blocking by KC on the slide blocking was enough. First and ten, KC shows old school I formation. Defense morphs to classic 5-2 Oklahoma look:

----------------------F-----------$
---C----------------------------------------C
-----------------M----B
---------W----T--N---T----S

-X-------U--T-G-C-G-T----------------Y
--------------------1
-
--------------------3
--------------------2

Have not used "3" for offense before. Basically a FB in old I formation football, but in modern ball guy can still slip out and catch a pass so don't assume 3 is always a bruiser like Rosie.

Steelers sniff out high hat blocking (pass), TJ drops (S) drops to the short route where Y sits. Burns sits in zone on the deep route to that side. Dupree also drops into coverage.
Mahomes goes left with the pass after the play action. Defense doesn't bite and Hargraves gets a good push up the middle vs. a double team. Damn near splits the double. Incomplete pass.

that is a **** ton of typing. I would be wiped out by now
