Moats/Worilds ...

We have 2 more weeks against weak teams - Jax and Cleveland. Jax always seems to play us tough and beat us when we don't expect it. Cleveland is Cleveland and they almost beat us in game one with a depleted team to start the season. We must right the ship and beat both teams soundly on both sides of the ball. The rest of the season won't be so kind. I can easily see us losing to the Rats again and losing both games to the Bungles. They are rivalry games so you never know but if we did lose those 3 games, our chances of making the playoffs will be very slim.

I agree with this statement based on common sense alone......but it has me thinking......how does one rank the Steelers OLB's and where would Woodley rank among that bunch if he were still here?

Worilds
Jones
Moats
Harrison
Zumwalt

I recall Spence lining up on the outside against TB and creating pressure on a pass rush. Very quick.

Moats was the one that got the quick rush and the holding penalty. Timmons had one where he was hanging on Glennons back as he threw the ball. And Worilds got thru on a stunt and forced a throw away. We have guys that can do it, just not consistently. Some of it is the scheme, some of it is the players.

Who is the best olb then. Harrison almost instantly got a holding call. Once he gets in shape it is not a stretch to say he is the best olb we have. Unfortunately that means we are in bad bad shape.

The list above is pretty accurate. Harrison has the legend behind him, but he is no where near that player. He was out of position a lot during the game, not containing, several steps slow. A situational pass rusher is all he should be. The hold that he got was ONLY because of where the QB scrambled to. Harrison was easily pushed out of the play, and Glennon moved into that vacated spot and the LT didn't see him. So when Harrison changed direction, it caused the hold. One of the few times the secondary did their jobs. Like I said, Harrison has the legend behind him which makes a lot of people want him to be better, but he simply is not.

On the holding call, Harrison beat the LT around the edge, and the tackle had to put Harrison into a headlock. Glennon had not moved into position to be sacked - he was in the middle of the pocket and in Harrison's sights before Harrison was held.

Worilds is 26 jones is 25 so jones gets this year to match what worilds did at 25. Personally I think they both suck and last year I said I wouldn't pay worilds more than 3.5 mill a year. And the mJority of this board gave me a hard time for that. Curious what everyone thinks now

I said I loved the tag decision because it forces him to stay healthy and be productive for two years in a row. I heard a lot of people who wanted to sign him long term and from what I hear the FO tried but stuck to their guns on what they were willing to pay which I think helped us. Problem is they used some of that money to extend Gilbert and Allen. From what I can see Gilbert is likely here until after 2015 just because of his contract the savings are just not there. Unless he gets beat out of a backup spot which the way he is playing could happen. Allen might be cut if a new regime comes in and he doesn't step up this year. He has a 3 million dollar roster bonus in 2015 so if he doesn't step it up and a new head coach and GM are in they might not be willing to pony over another 3 million for a good nickel back.

Can you imagine what a good GM and head coach could have done if the steelers wouldn't have extended Gilbert and Allen and would have just let Ike and Keisel go. And would have just let TP play out his contract...

The tag doesn't force him to be healthy two years in a row and be productive. He isn't productive now and he is tagged. He makes the money regardless. And seriously if it took the tag to do that then do you really want him? He could have 5 good games this year and he still is going to make money in FA. Somebody will pay him.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Vader again.

Look for the team to go after Justin Houston in the off-season. They will have to pay BIG for him but not any more than they were paying Woodley, IMO.

With both Houston and JJ being former dawgs (they also practiced together in this past off-season), they are 'tight' and we might benefit from this relationship.

We have to find some pressure or our defense will continue to have to 'try' to manufacture it through 'exotic' alignments which is extremely risky.

Der Der Der. Exactly... That's why he won't be a Steelers next year unless he takes a HUGE paycut. But I guess signing him longterm would have been a better idea...

I would think that Woodley would be at the Top of that list.

Yeah, his 1 solo tackles and 0 sacks after 4 games...

At this point I would say Jarvis Jones, unfortunately, is our best OLB. Moats would be #2 with Worilds a close #3 but none are very good overall.

never said Glennon moved into where he would be sacked, I said he moved into the vacated space left by the LT pushing Harrison away from the play. When Glennon moved, Harrison changed his direction, the LT didn't see Glennon move and grabbed his shoulder pads. Glennon was in no danger.

There are more than two options. I was for letting him go last year. Why sign an oft injured average LOLB? He goes against the worst OT or a TE every snap. He sucked on the right against LTs. I'd rather play Moats there.

Worilds is a great athlete and has had years where he had 5 sacks. Jones is a mediocre to poor athlete that will not get faster, quicker or better, he is what he is.

I think you might be the first person ever to describe Worilds as a "great athlete." His combine numbers of a 4.72 forty and 24 bench reps were pedestrian at best, and it's carried over to his overall play on the field.

I'd offer him a decent, respectable middle of the road contract based on his current play. Certainly not the payday he envisions and wants.
After this season that might be all anyone offers him.

Not to worry, Worilds will turn it on over the last half of the season. Thus "justifying" some team overpaying him. Unfortunately, judging from the Allen contract it might be the Steelers. And the jury is still out on Gilbert and his pay day.
