Mr. Rooney is not obtuse to the situation

His words..
Thank goodness!

“You know, right now I don't think that anybody on our staff is a candidate," Rooney said. "Maybe a candidate to stay on the staff, depending on what the new head coach wants to do, but probably not as a head coach."
Just 2 more OCs and DCs that won't be part of the non-existent Mike Tomlin coaching sapling. ;)

Steelers have 12 picks in the upcoming draft. Don't they? That offers a little better opportunity for a new hc to get players he likes. Put his signature on his team, if you will. That's all. Major needs at qb and wr might be sour points for a prospective coach. I would think a new hc would want to pick his own qb.

I’m sorry.
But that was really weird?!?

According to Pat Kirwin (Sirius) who I thinknits along the most knowledgeable analysts, believes the Steelers are in great salary cap position and they could phase out the high (older player) contract over the next couple years without eating a lot of dead cap money.
We are in great cap position because we don't have a QB sucking up anything. But that also means we don't have a QB.

Our roster is not very good, thus no one worth paying money too.

Having lots of cap space is not really a good indicator of a good team. Good teams with good rosters are fighting against the cap every year having to make tough decisions (sometimes we havne't made them very wisely). And thinking you "fix" teams with lots of cap space and free agent signing is what bad teams do (exactly like Kirwin tried when he was a GM). All you do is overpay and your roster gets old in a hurry.

The actual WORST thing this team could do with a new coach is think his "wish list" of free agents is going to magically make us a legit contender. If we buy into that mentality instead of fixing our draft issues, depth on the roster, and finding the right YOUNG quarterback, it is not going to be a very good 5-years around here, which is the MINIMUM any new coach will be here.

I hope that doesn't happen but until we know the next coach, see how they tackle this off-season and how good out top-100 draft picks are, we won't know.

I think that is why he was tired of coaching, they tried to make a final run the last two years with future HOF QBs past their primes and it fell flat. I think he knows what's ahead with this collective and didn't have the stomach for a rebuild.

absolutely, coach tomlin could see the writing on the wall and just didn’t have it in him to continue. He realized this was a good place to break it off.

Some may call it a ‘cop-Out”, but i don’t think so, remember it was his decision kn owing he had tried hard to reverse the action.

I’m glad he made the right choice otherwise we may have gone on an eternity groundhog retreat.

Yeah he left Cowher guys like Rod Woodson,Dermontti Dawson and Greg Lloyd.

Two Hall Of Fame players in their prime and Lloyd if not for injury, would have been three.

100% and I didn’t mean any disrespect for Noll, I should have worded it better.

The team tomlin inherited when 1st hired by far, i meAN BY FAR, out-weighs what the Tomlin is leaving for the new coach.

Even coach Noll’s team was better rostered than what the tomlin is leaving behind.
I think Noll turned over more than 75% of the roster between 1969 and 1974 and the entire coaching staff.
I’ll be waiting for the Tomlin Fan Club to ask “Will you say the next coach won with Tomlin’s players?”
Well it depends on how many of Tomlin’s players and staff are still here.
38 players and all but 3 of the coaching staff from 2005 were still here in 2008.

All the next coach has to do is win a playoff game in less than 9 years.

I don’t see a lot of argument for the tomlin fan club t hang on to.

About the only thing is that 19 year of non-losing season. Once you break that down, it’s really not that impressive but more disappointing considering the loaded roster and HOF QB and others of waisted careers.

Tomlin was over kept by 10years and has a playoff record to prove it.

give him his dues, but also his downfalls as well.

93.7 had an outside sports guy on yesterday who pointed out that of Tomlin’s last 12 first round draft picks only one got a second contract with the Steelers.

it’s these kind of things that have made me say good riddance and goodbye.

You and i both know there is many more of these types of failures.

But we are moving on and hope is alive and well.
