Najee Harris

I have read all the support for Harris. He averages less than 4 yards per carry. That is not a premier back in the league. He has way too many TFLs. I keep hoping he will learn to just hit the hole and push the pile forward. But he goes sideways looking for something and in college that worked but does not work that often in the NFL.

Ramon Foster, a guy who might know a little something about blocking schemes, addressed this. He said that if you watch the OL when Najee runs, they are usually attempting zone blocking and that this requires Najee to be patient and not attack until a hole opens up. The problem is that oftentimes there is no hole that opens and Najee is forced to kinda freelance. And, that is not his strength.
Warren on the other hand gets calls that require the OL to block specific players rather than areas. The OL is more adept at that (but still subpar). This allows Warren to hit holes faster.
Seems to me they are calling plays and blocking them in the exact reverse way that they should given the players’ skill sets.

A "laymen's" advice for Najee...

Get all the game tape of Marshawn Lynch's NFL runs......every single one of them and watch them over and over until you mimic his style and game...

You will thank me later.

And then hope he gets some blocking up front.

If this is true its ridiculous. You are either zone blocking or hat on a hat scheme. Changing whole scheme depending who is the back seems dubious at best. Hope that is inaccurate.

I have been one of Harris biggest critics since he came into the league. We know the stats, we've all seen the bad tape. Overall he isn't great but a few times a year he shows up bigtime and yesterday he played well and helped get a tough win. He is very frustrating because if he could play like that consistently he would be a pretty solid back. Like the Ben's last homegame for example, he ran posessed, looked like a different guy.
Steelernation is never gonna see Leveon Bell production from a RB ever again unfortunately, at this point I would be happy with the Najee we had yesterday, get the tough yards to keep the drives moving and take pressure off of Kenny.

Thanks. I posted on here a few weeks ago about holes opening up for Foster and Najee never getting any. Makes sense why.

I thought Najee was running with a purpose like we haven't seen for quite awhile yesterday.

Great post SteelBuckeye and thanks for the many others as well.

Now that Najee has lost JMH21's confidence, his NFL career is obviously over.
Thanks for those runs Najee, good luck in your future endeavors!
;)

It’s not final until Jenswaine says so———————

I've always gone by the life/work philosophy of......You got to help yourself before asking for help from others...
He needs to improve HIS game.
22 needs to get better.
Yep. I agree.....but if he is going to watch film of a RB it better be Barry Sanders then if we are going status quo on our OL.

The one thing you don't see from Warren is the 4 yard loss. He gets to the hole. It may be nothing but it doesn't go from second and 2 to third and five.

I have watched alot of steeler football.
This dude runs hard.
If he ran behind the Lev Bell- Connor O line he would be leading the league. Yea he misses some holes but he misses them with maximum effort.

Unfortunately----effort doesn't always equate to results.

Najee's axe is swinging hard and fast.......but there should be a lot more wood chips flying..

All of that totally ignores the reality of the offense the situation he gets put in. Yes he sometimes misses a hole but his average yards per carry are 3.9, and until yesterday were better than Warrens on the season with far more carries. they are now tied at 3.9. Considering how crappy the blocking and scheme are they are both doing pretty good. If they were running a sane scheme the last 4 years he would easily be averaging far more. It isn't the running backs it is the scheme.

Stat line for the season:

Harris 77 carries for 300 yards 3.9 yards a carry with 1 td
Warren 40 carries for 156 yards 3.9 yards a carry with 1 td

I am giving up on Najee. He still thinks that he is in college and can outrun defenders to the outside when he should be hitting the hole and getting 3-4 yards.
There was one particular play yesterday which I believe you're referencing. Najee had not one but two holes he could have hit on the inside, but chose niether, and tried to jump to the outside where 3 or 4 defenders were waiting for him. Not great field vision there, for sure, but most of the time this season I think it's been more a matter of scheme, playcalling, and OL execution.

Harris runs the ball hard, new guy. Don't give up. Don't ever give up.

Warren 62 touches for 321 yards 5.2 yards per touch with 1 TD
Total: 147 touches for 673 yards 4.6 yards per touch 2 TDs

Year 3 for Le'Veon Bell (6 games)
Bell 137 touches for 692 yards 5.1 yards per touch with 3 TDs

This reflects the type of touches more than anything. If Najee got the same type of throws as Warren he would be better.

Bell got us double the production of both guys.

Leveon Bell averaged 129 yards per game as a Steeler. No RB in the history of the league comes close.

Yawn........Would Bell do that with this offense?

Najee needs to carry a ******* compass with him in games so he knows North/South from East/West.
This guy never should run wide, he’s too slow and doesn’t have the quick burst. He needs to run off tackle and up the middle. He’s a mauler and a banger and should be used as such. Let Warren be your guy to go outside he’s more built for that role.
