New York will remain a “sanctuary city” for undocumented immigrants, Mayor de Blasio promised on Friday — even if Donald Trump makes good on his threats to yank federal funding in retaliation.

In fact, the city will reject federal aid that comes with objectionable “strings attached,” such as requiring local cops to turn over people they learn are here illegally, an action that, as a sanctuary city, New York won’t allow, he said.

“That may be a choice we have to make,” de Blasio told WNYC’s Brian Lehrer.

Jeff Sessions May Prosecute ‘Sanctuary Cities’ If Confirmed

Sen. Jeff Sessions is on record saying so-called “sanctuary cities” that protect illegal immigrants should be prosecuted. He himself may get that chance next year.

From his first day in office, Mr. Sessions will have the power to strip some federal funding from sanctuary cities, thanks to rulings this year by the Justice Department’s inspector general, who said federal law requires localities to cooperate with immigration agents — and who provided an initial list of a handful of the worst offenders.

“The sanctuary cities thing is huge. I think most jurisdictions are going to fold like a cheap suit,” said Rosemary Jenks, government relations manager at NumbersUSA, which lobbies for stricter immigration laws.

LA, Santa Fe and Chicago have made the same announcements, in fact there are a bunch of cities that plan to defy the rule of law. As long as those mayors pay for it out of their pockets, go for it. It's when honest taxpayers have to foot the bill that it should be brought to a halt.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel defiantly stood by Chicago's status as a sanctuary city for illegal aliens Monday. The mayor said that illegal immigrants will be safe in the city of Chicago. The illegal immigrants told the mayor to speak for himself, that they'll take their chances in Mosul.
