NT draft

The Steelers haven't had a true nose tackle since Casey Hampton. They don't care about the position and I don't think that changes in this draft either.
I agree that they will probably continue this trend of avoiding players who they consider "jersey walls" that produce little in the offensive backfield. Smith did not produce allot of tfl or sacks, on the other hand if you can collapse the pocket it will produce bigger results for the rest of the front seven if the qb constantly has to roll to our strength.

I'm guessing they will be looking for someone who is 6'3 or above and 285 to 310 in the first two days. Benton, Breese, Pickens, Orhorhoro, Morris, Tuipulotu and maybe Dexter and others. Obviously the combine will have some influence, after that I think they'll just make their decision on value and other needs/players available through the first four picks.

yes ,, i knew they can catch a defense on the field with a run package vs. a dime etc... I just didnt catch why the refs were stopping play.
Are you talking SB? They said because Goddart went to the bench area him coming back in constitutes sub package and therefore they stopped play and awarded challenge.

Hargrave isn’t a nt he was getting destroyed and was replaced by Tyson he was then mostly a de in the nickel and dime and successful. He was converted 3t to 1t which failed as his best trait for South Carolina was pass rushing via speed and the type of scheme Philly has lets him play to his assets. Had we gotten him he would be wasted as a 34 nt unless he was a de and strictly under t
Never said he was

Just that I missed him and he would’ve been a better keeper on the DL than Tuitt…seems pretty obvious, obviously

I suspect that Mazi Smith blows up the combine. Note the following:

“But let’s start with this: Smith does 22 reps on the bench press, but that’s with 325 (not 225). He close-grip benched 550 pounds. He vertical-jumps 33 inches. He broad-jumped 9-4 1/2. Smith, who had 37 tackles last season, has clocked a 4.41 shuttle time, which would’ve tied the best by any defensive tackle at this year’s NFL Scouting Combine, and it would’ve been better than any defensive tackle weighing 310 pounds or more in the past decade. His 6.95 3-cone time would’ve been by far the fastest among defensive tackles in Indianapolis. The fastest was 7.33. Smith’s 60-yard shuttle time is 11.90.

His production did not match his skills to be honest, but a team with a good defensive line coach and the right system is going to turn him into Aaron Donald. I know for a fact he can play the 0 and 1 (where he played most of the time at Michigan) but he excels at the 2 and 3.

That's elite strength&power. 325 22 times..yeah that's a holy ****..close grip 550lbs. That's nuts. He would easily start out as top 3 strongest men in the NFL. I'd grab that guy in a flash if available.

Smith is not a good pass rusher right now but I imagine him, Heyward, Highsmith and Watt as the base defense. "Okay, we're gonna pass on these guys but we need to double Watt. Keep the RB in to help block him. Oh, we need to double Cam so the C and G take him on. So that leaves Mazi and Highsmith singled. No, let's have the TE chip Highsmith."

That means 4 available receivers, the TE only after chipping, against 7 defenders including Pierre, Wallace, Sutton (I hope), Minkah and Kazee (I hope). Good luck with that.

I think our DL's biggest problem is not the talent we have (though I would prefer having a true NT), but the dumb ***(es) on the sideline that only put 1 or 2 of them on the field on 2nd and 6... especially against the clowns or ravens, or any QB smart enough to audible, and we get gashed for a 12 yard run.

Minkah saves way too many TDs on running plays.

sad but we’ve wasted one of the best DE‘s in football instead of putting him in position to force a tackle to block him one on one we moved him inside to get double and triple teamed by centers, guards, pulling guards, tackles even thigh ends chipping on him. Strongest guard in football Squint Nelson can’t block cam one on one! So what do we do? Play him out of position! If you don’t have 4 solid strong men who can hold Down the defensive line AND rush the qb you will not play for a Super Bowl… what’s it and that’s all. The game constantly changes but the Steelers don’t and by the time they do it’s too late! you have to stop the run at the line and you must pressure the qb. Outside of a few blitz’s getting through we can’t do neither. our failures on the both sides of the lines, both in terms of coaching and talent, have been horrible and is why we are constantly 8-8! That attitude better change if we hope to compete.

Maybe its time to move to a 4-3?

True Noses are going the way of the dinosaur..

Personally --- I think 90 would excel as the SAM.
We could make that transition. We'd still be a little light up the middle. Leal is only 283lbs, That puts him in the 5th percentile for DT's. Loudermilk weighed 274lbs which would put him in the 1st percentile for DT's. He is listed at 293lbs which would put him in the middle of the pack at 58th percentile. I think Watt and Highsmith would do fine at end as they rarely drop in coverage at this point. I worry about MLB as we don't have a coverage MLB. Maybe if we re-sign Edmunds he can drop into MLB in passing situations.

Stephen Tuitt's battle with mental health has been the biggest factor....recently.
