Offensive line

Its the technique and scheme... theyve brought in guys who were good elsewhere, Seamalu, Daniels, Herbig, even Mason Cole... these were guys that were good gets in UFA and weren't league minimum refurbs or anything... add in all the draft picks.. its not talent over the past few years... its absolutely what they are trying to do...

Say it louder for the people in the back. These guys didn’t show up in Pittsburgh and forget how to play. It’s the scheme. Pat Meyer is not a good OL coach.

If you look at his biography on Wikipedia, the only listing of any accomplishments is from his stint in the CFL with Montreal. Nothing about how the lines improved, gave up fewer sacks, rushed for more yards, nothing. Just stuff like this.

Carolina Panthers

In 2020, Meyer joined the Carolina Panthers as the offensive line coach. He was fired after the 2021 season.

Unironically, the Pittsburgh Steelers job is the longest he has stayed anywhere. Was also OL coach at Colorado State for 4 years. Guy’s career screams mediocrity.

Dude has had 1 legit good year in his career, bound to happen if ya coach long enough.

The rest are all littered with teams that aren’t good running the ball…he is a perfect Tomlin subordinate, grossly inept and zero threat to the throne.

The problem is the technique he teaches appears to be another square peg for the run scheme of AS and the skill sets of our OLmen…AND maybe he just sucks too

How many OLs careers have been lost or negatively altered by these fools in charge?

Pat Meyer is the equivalent of the O’Canada, same for Austin.

We still have rails and this coaching staff needs ran out of town on them.

Salute the nation

OL Coaching is so critical to the success of an NFL Lineman.
Pat Meyer has a horrible track record as does the DC Terrell Austin.
They’ve been fired everywhere they’ve coached but of course Shades hired them both.
this OL does not have the push and aggressiveness that I would have expected them to have.
Keep in mind we played the 32’nd ranked defense minus two of their starters.

This is what im saying. I cant objecively say they ALL suck.. But collexctively im not satisfied. I can say its either Arthur Smith , or Pat Meyer . ANd im 90% sure its Meyer.

He teaches that weird punch heavy technique that is theoretically able to keep pass rushers off balance, but imo, requires a high level of mental processing. It may be better to simplify and speed up

Who is teaching the block for 2 sec and then stand there technique.?

It's Smith and Meyer. AWFUL PLAYCALLING.
I know I wasn't the only one screaming at the TV yesterday with Smith's playcalling.
They need to use Gainwell like a WR. Like Miami uses Achane.
NOT on 3rd and 2 near the redzone.
I have bagged on Gainwell at times but the guy showed some ball skills that are ELITE for any RB. That 1 handed catch gave me Leveon Bell flashbacks.
He also seems to have great awareness and is rarely out of position and always sees holes and cutback lanes when they are there. Just a smart football player.

Steelers biggest problem on offense is the guy calling the plays.
3rd and 2 and he gets cute in the redzone.
You drafted a 6-2 220lb RB to get cute on 3rd and short?? Against the leagues worst defense?
You run Johnson out of the Jumbo on 3rd and 4th mano e mano and let the chips fall where they fall.

Smith can't even design a proper "tush push" Heyward was gifted that 1st down.

Even with this line a good OC would have a legit ground game with Warren, Gainwell and Johnson.
Johnson needs reps get him in there and get him comfortable. 11 games in he needs some work, some confidence.
Rookies, even the greats need time to adjust. Look around the league Most of the rookies are just now starting to find themselves
You can tell Johnson is trying too hard when he is in there because he barely gets reps.
He had a nice pass pro block yesterday and would have had a nice run that was called for facemask.
When you are up by multiple scores late like the colts game or yesterday there is no excuse for not giving Johnson every single rep.
Keep the miles off Warren and Kenny and let the big guy come in and gain valuable experience.
Same with Rodgers, up big, get him out of there!
Tomlin saw his buddy Dan Quinn lose his starting QB in garbage time only a few short weeks ago.
How are these head coaches so stupid in these situations?

Watch the eagles line push against the lions.. We never get this.

Want to know why our offense is anemic,, well aside from a legit WR 2. Its our line.

They are not good. Frazier is pretty good. The rest including seumalu are simply There. C- . Every week.
The OL coach Stoutland for the Eagles seems to be the constant denominator for a team that has had one of the best if not the best offensive lines in the league. Look at their left tackle Jordan Mailata, kid was a rugby player out of Australia, I believe he was one of those guys considered an extra add on from another country that the NFL allows to carry. He was brought to the team in 2018 and Stoutland kept working with him, at least that’s what they were saying last night, anyway, the kid is one of the best LT in the league. I forget the guys name who was a first round bust at tackle for New England I think, Eagles grabbed him, moved him to guard last season and the guy played very well. Ended up signing a nice free agent contract.

Stoutland has consistently done this with others, not to mention astute drafting. The gap between Meyers and Stoutland is ridiculous. Stoutland also assumed the run game coordinator title about six years ago. Head coaches have come and gone in Philadelphia but he remains.

Yes, agreed all very true and good good points.
He is also very good at staying in his lane and not becoming too ambitious.
If you’re happy where you’re at, who you work with, and your family is secure, why get into the coaching carousel?
Smart man

Who is teaching the block for 2 sec and then stand there technique.?
Its zone blocking ... often in modern zone schemes the OL , particularly tackles, are supposed to block tge DE then pass them off to the guard. Everyone runs some of tgat, we seem to run a lotits a young line with little cohesion. They misread a lot and end up passing off to no one or a guy out there in space with no one to block...
if you are going to be a run first team with a young oline, just primarily do man blocking... and let them drive block guys into oblivion, not this passive, reactionary VS... let them get after it off the snap

If he truly wants to teach that technique, and he seems married to it at a MINIMUM he should have both an Aikido master and a championship caliber boxer/former boxer working with the men to they can learn proper striking and knocking opponents off balance. We got some old white guy that’s never been in fight in his life trying to teach striking techniques 🤦🏻‍♂️

And it shows

I'd say the right side is pretty good and they all came from one draft class. Seumalo is looking his age and Jones is so up and down.

They got cheap and didn’t pay munch what he was worth and the day of the cheap position coach and the “my good buddy” the coordinator position are f’ing over in the nfl. We might as well not have a position coach over the offensive line! That javkass stinks! The talent in the league is pretty even Steven coaching is a spot to gain advantage. Bringing in cheap coaches isn’t going to cut it. The 49ers have the model. My wife is from Pittsburgh she’s Irish her uncle recruited some of the best college talent in the history of college football from Tony Dorset, Bill Fralic, Dan Moreno, list goes on and on… she doesnt let the cheap *** Irish Rooney’s and Cowher off the hook for the many years of stinking under Cowher and only Dan sr bailing jr, and Cowher out when Dan sr. stepping in to draft Ben fixed things. Imagine how different this would have been, as she says, if Cowher would have drafted a fat *** offensive lineman from Arkansas instead of Ben. But we are back to the cheap Irishman and his head coach stinking it up with their deal with the devil: just don’t spend too much and we’ll put up with your mediocre record. It’s the exact same thing! They are stuck in same mess! I think it’s time for the Rooney’s to pass on the ownership ball!! Don’t ask my wife you’ll hear some fine swear words in the Gaelic no less!!

Great post

They are getting better run blocking, well at least Troy, Jones, and Frazier are. I really see Mason as a c- OL Isaac is very average, was surrounded by 2 studs in Philly.
Pass, they have got to start or use more 5 wide sets and Rodgers or Mason fire slants to DK, Wilson, and plenty of tunnel screens to Gainwell and Warren..
Get 6-8 on 1st and then use the 2-3 TE set and try some TE screens to Smith, just some of the screens KC a few years used to run Kelce and just some simple hook routes up the seem
