Overrated preseason players

keep Vic over the useless OLB Chris Carter

Steelers make roster moves

The Steelers added a cornerback and an offensive lineman on Monday.

The Steelers signed offensive lineman Graham Pocic and cornerback Dayonne Nunley, the team announced today.

Pocic was released by the Chicago Bears on August 10, 2014. He originally signed with the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted rookie free agent on July 29, 2013 out of Illinois. Pocic will wear No. 64.

Nunley is an undrafted rookie free agent out of Miami (Ohio). He participated in the Steelers 2014 rookie mini-camp on a tryout basis. Nunley will wear No. 37.

To make room on the roster, the Steelers waived-injured offensive lineman Bryant Browning and released wide receiver James Shaw

I am thinking this too, But Carter seems to have nine lives up to this point..................

They both are playing well, So'oto is a veteran who has had his share of injuries that has helped him bounce around the league. His ceiling is pretty much what he is, Howard Jones is an undrafted ROOKIE free agent. When you have two players of similar skill, in the same position, and limited roster spots. You take the one with the higher ceiling. The Steelers might try to find a way to keep them both, for special teams purposes. But its a pleasant surprise for both of them, seeing as the OLB position is pretty thin.
Care to point to some snaps? It's only been two games so this is a grain of salt argument, but I have not once seen Hojo threaten the QB after two watches of both games. Also both recoveries were agaist third team defenses. Carter has shown something against weak Ds only to disappear in the regular season.I could be wrong, and frankly hope I am, but I can't say I recall him being a factor.

First bolded part: Not true. He's been around the QB quite a bit. Just not there to finish. The kid does have a knack for being around the ball and being opportunistic. Qualities this team has lacked in reserve LBers (as well as starters) for a while.

Second bolded part: This is exactly when you would expect your developmental players to see playing time. Or maybe we could just keep paying Chris Carter to not develop.

I'm not saying the kid is the second coming, but he's a more intriguing developmental guy than Carter, with who you already know what you have.

I think that's an exagerration. In both defensive fumble recoveries he only got to the ball first by being on the short side of the play. In the first defensive recovery he only beat So'oto to the ball by a hair.

I'm not saying he won't develop or doesn't have potential. I'm saying that I think it's a bit much to think he's really done anything to make the team, or that what he has shown will somehow make him practice squad proof. Alan Baxter flashed more than Hojo did and was still cut.

To be fair I havent watched every moment of either game but for all the good stuff said about Justin Brown I havent seen much in the games.

Point to snaps of what, to prove both players are playing well? You knock Jones for his plays against third teamers, and praise So'oto (a veteran of FOUR YEARS) against the SAME third stringers. If both are playing well, both are making plays, and one is younger and has more upside, how is this an argument at all? I even said the Steelers might try to keep both for special teams purposes... I'm confused at what you are arguing about right now.

My fault. Switched the quotes. Also, i'm not arguing that So'oto should make the team; in fact I stated earlier that it's highly unlikely he will. As for Hojo, yes, he is younger, yes he was undrafted, but to date shy of special teams he has shown nothing, unless you put a lot of weight on picking up fumbles others have forced.

If Hojo makes the team, it's for special teams play. I don't see the Steelers ditching Carter for him - the two are a year apart so it's not like age is a huge difference maker either.

Is HoJo this year's Thadeus Gibson who doesn't make it through waivers to the PS causing the FO to rue the day they let him go?

I understand that Hojo and So'to have practice squad eligibility. I just don't understand the mindset that says that just because they have it, we have to use it. To me, if either of them is even close to taking Carter's spot, it's a no brainer ... go with the potential.

Potential is better than sure thing when the sure thing is not good!

Gibson never stuck with a team in 4 years and is now going to play in Canada with the rest of Tomberts picks, Sweed, & Terry Hawthorne

Right, but there were some people here (no idea who) who were complaining that we let such a good talent go while keeping some scrub.

A lot of people latched onto that because of the off hand comments that season that Thaddeus was a guy the Steelers wanted to develop and who flashed promise in TC, just like Hojo. At best he was a fringe player who may have developed into something with proper coaching, not the next James Harrison (which seemingly everybody wants to think all of our fringe guys are.)

So yes, Hojo is this year's Thaddeus Gibson.
