Arizona passes law requiring students to pass civics test

Arizona became the first state in the nation on Thursday to enact a law requiring high school students to pass the U.S. citizenship test on civics before graduation, giving a boost to a growing nationwide effort to boost civics education. The swift action in Arizona comes as states around the country take up similar measures. Arizona's law requires high school students to correctly answer 60 of 100 questions on the civics portion of the test new citizens must pass.

The test is being pushed nationally by the Arizona-based Joe Foss Institute, which has set a goal of having all 50 states adopt it by 2017, the 230th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution. The institute says legislatures in 15 states are expected to consider it this year.

Of course the Dems are against this test, they say that memorization doesn't create free thinking. I say that anything we do to introduce civics into the minds of these kids is a plus. The more I see these " man in the street " , 'Water's World' type interviews, the more I'm for this bill being passed in every State. How can we expect voters to make informed decisions if they are completely ignorant to the basics of the issues.

Just a few days into office and Ducey is ruffling a lot of feathers.
He's a business man so he's requiring all of the state departments to be responsible for their budgets.

I like him.

I like the idea. I think a qualification test on civics is a great idea.

I have recommended an eligibility test for all political candidates, to insure that they knew the duties, responsibilities and limitations on government power. I would make the passing grade a lot higher than 60%, however.

Nearly every profession - doctors, lawyers, accountants, teachers, nurses, beauticians for crying out loud - must pass a qualification test before being licensed.

Why in the world should it be easier to become a politician with the power to spend millions of dollars and bankrupt people than it is to wash somebody's hair??

LEGAL immigrants have to pass a similar test, if not the same one

My wife would be ******. She thinks there is 52 states. She is convinced.

That might at least mitigate the possibility of 'Guam tipping over' in the future.
