Pirates 2024

Jones looked good. Wish they would have let him finish the 6th, but very good debut.

I would not have minded letting him try to finish with a three run lead, but the Marlins were starting to get to him a bit and had the tying run at bat.

Given Jones's lack of experience and his pitch count getting elevated, it probably wasn't the worst decision.

Bucs 3-0. Heck of a start... Might have to get the MLB package.. Miss listening to the radio feed.

Jared Jones struck out 10 in just under six innings, giving up three runs.

He definitely can be something special, but given how hard he throws without the largest stature, I worry a little bit about stamina and durability going forward.

He's not built like Paul Skenes.

Know who Jones reminds me of? Spencer Strider. Strider is 6'0", 190 lbs., deals 98 mph+, filthy slider. Strider pitched 186 innings last season, fanned 281.

Jones is 6'1", 190 lbs., deals 98 mph+, filthy slider. Jones also has a very good change that he threw just 6 times yesterday but dang, the thing moves down-and-away from lefties viciously.

The Pirates need to solve the 2B issue so that Triolo can be a backup infielder. Either Gonzales or Peguero needs to dominate in AAA and take that to the majors to some degree. 1B is manageable with a platoon of Joe and Tellez. The line-up now has 6 guys (Cruz, Hayes, Davis, Reynolds, Taylor, and Suwinski) who will be at or close to 20 HR's.

I like Triolo more than most. He doesn't have the range at 2B that Gonzalez or Peguero have, but it is adequate and his bat might play better in the majors.

His best position his 3B, but that obviously is not an option with the Pirates. I kind of would like to see them give him a look at 1B at some point, given they really do not have any standout young players there in the system.

Gonzalez and Peguero do not seem to have the potential they once did and whoever holds the 2B spot for the next year or two is ultimately just keeping it warm for Termarr Johnson, if all goes to plan.

Maybe the Pirates can just play the Marlin's all year and make the playoffs. :ROFLMAO:
4 and 0. Pirates gave up 5 un the 1st. Ended up winning in 10. Bednar wih the blown save in the 10th though.

The starting pitching wasn't great in the series, but the hitting and bullpen picked up the slack.

It's tough to sweep a four-game series, regardless of the opponent.

4- game winning streak on the road against 4 L-handed starters.

Also, Falter is not long for the rotation. He just isn't. The Pirates have not only Skenes but Priester in AAA. Priester went 5 2/3 today, giving up 1 H while fanning 9 and winning the game. The only run off him was due to the reliever giving up a HR with a gun Priester put on base.

Priester struggled last year in the majors but was a lot better when he featured his 2-seamer over the 4-seamer. Gave up just 2 flyball outs today, 5 groundball outs and the 9 K's. He is a huge improvement over Falter.

I tuned in when Bednar was coming in. Wasn't expecting that, but I do have to say these guys might make it pretty rough on pitching this year the way they battle at the plate.

Those are the number of pitches thrown by Marlins pitchers in the four games. 786 pitches in 4 games or an average of 191 per game.

You wanna see if a team has a deep pen? Make them throw 191 pitches per game.

The Pirates won again and are now 5 and 0

And forced Nats pitchers to throw 205 more pitches. That's now 991 in five games, an AVERAGE of 198/game. They simply burn through the opponent's pitching and make every game the Bucco's starter struggles a bullpen game. Advantage, Pirates. Or where the Pirates' starter is on, then advantage Pirates.

Just decimate the opponents rotation the first game of a series then get the broom out. :D

Pirates picked up Ryder Ryan off the minor league free agent scrap heap. Hunter Stratton was a very low round draft pick in 2017. He picked Jared Jones in the 2nd round, Skenes 1-1, Barco 2nd round, etc. Cherington knows where to find power arms though obviously he did not draft Stratton.

It might not be premature to be concerned about Mitch Keller

He's had two rough outings to begin 2024, following his struggles in the second half of last season and signing that new contract over the winter.

The Pirates simply cannot afford to have that much money tied up in an underperforming player, though the development of the young pitching would somewhat soften the blow.

Watching today's lineups.... man do the Bucs have a bunch of nobodies and never weres as coaches.

It might be just as or even more concerning regarding Bednars performance to date...
His fastball has ZERO movement on it right now...
