Pitt HC Search

Pitt unfortunately is in the no man's land for hiring coaches... If a coach is successful, he will quickly bolt for a bigger and better job. If a coach is unsuccessful, he will get fired. If a coach stays at Pitt long term, then he has probably had a sustained period of slighlty better than mediocrity. This is just an outsider's point of view...

In this day and age everywhere risks losing good head coaches... you cant let that deter you on hires... I mean urban Meyer left a freaken national championship program. Some may go for other programs with more prestige, others for more money, others for ties to their past, and others for the NFL... none are totally safe

They had the #1 defense in the country last year, and seem to regularly rank near the top. I guess I'm in the same boat as others when I say it's not clear to me why anyone would hire the guy.

If Narduzzi is their choice, and it looks like he will be, so be it. Bigger concern I have is will the new AD be able to open up the purse strings and allow them to hire an OC and DC that have a clue?

Chryst was able to field a decent offense but the defense was dreadful.

Narduzzi has enough credentials as a coordinator that he could wait for the right situation. I don't think he takes the job if Pitt didn't provide him with the staff budget that he hoped for. The new Chancellor seems intent on elevating the football program.

You really can't overlook the fact that the new Chancellor has thought that the football program was important enough to not wait on hiring a new AD before hiring a new HC. If they had waited until they conducted a thorough search for a new AD, there's a good chance that the "up and coming" coordinators would have found other positions. I'm not a Pitt fan per se, but I appreciate the aggressive nature of the move.

Hey....he is a pisano...

I say hire him! Probably makes mean pizzelles ...
If he likes Bloomfield and the Strip District maybe he'll stay in town longer.

Yesir!

You got that right.... I am a East End native myself..

In fact...resided in Bloomfield for a spell after moving out of the family homestead in SLiberty/Highland Park area..

Strip District was and still is the holiday food shopping area of choice for the fam..

Whether the new coach stays or leaves has less to do with him, but more to do with the status of the administration, public approval (attendance), and where the program is going ....

Coach Narduzzi, is that you? Shouldn't you be on the phone switching some of those MSU recruits' commitments to Pitt? :D

Bradley either told them to screw off and didn't even interview or someone up there really hates him. I think Narduzzi is a good hire and all, but honestly he will be gone in what 5 years tops?

Id like to see Pitt have the first sports coach degree program...it would be an "in" for people interested in coaching that cant play. train guys from the get go on strategy and management techniques. maybe then you can get some bright up and comers to lay down roots here... it would get copied everywhere, if it worked, but get a group of Pitt alums entrenched in the coaching ranks and there should always be someone from the tree willing to come back or who has a good assistant willing to do so....

Pitt folks don't want anyone who was connected with Sandusky. I don't know why people who really don't follow the program can't understand that.

I totally understand that but they shouldn't let it get in the way of hiring a good coach who will be here for a while. 93.7 quoted Bradley as saying that if he were hired it would be the last job he'd have. He hasn't been interviewed or even contacted as far as I know. Everyone else will be another three-and-out guy and the coaching carousel will continue.

Pitt is more interested in having a coach who can elevate the program than Tom Bradley. I don't dislike Bradley and would have given him consideration for the job, but when you look at his credentials versus Narduzzi's, it's not even close in my mind. Pitt found a much better coach to lead their program.

Don't get me wrong, I hope Narduzzi does well. I don't WANT my town to have a poor-to-mediocre major college team. I do think that having a good coach who is here for ten years or so would be a big step to having a better team.

I don't disagree with you and it would be great to have a long term, committed (at least 10 years) coach, but has this EVER occurred at Pitt? Pop Warner or Jock Sutherland maybe?
Give me the first version of Johnny Majors anytime. Although he left after only 4 years, his successor Sherrill (sp) continued to be successful.
It was only when Foge was promoted through the Peter Principle that things turned south.

I haven't heard one way or the other if OC Joe Rudolph will stay but I hope he does.

Pitt administration is ******* stupid. They had a great opportunity. ...Bradley. I am trying hard to like this program. Problem is, I don't.

It is college football and has gone into the ******* with the demise of joe pa. The controversy killed it and the stigma remains. It is no longer known as linebacker u but but **** u and will likely stay that way for decades. Failure to clean that up when it first showed up killed the goose that laid the gold eggs.

Agree that they need to do something to keep HC's from leaving while they are under contract. NCAA is more corrupt and hypocritical than PSU though. Half the presidents might not want to lose coaches so easily but the other half might be thinking "this will keep ME from getting a better coach". A promotion like Narduzzi got is one thing, but I like the idea mentioned elsewhere that if you sign a HC who is under contract at another school then you lose 5 scholarships for the time remaining on his old contract.

Put some penal buyout clauses in their contracts. When Bobby Petrino left Western Kentucky after one year to return to Louisville, WKU made money on the deal.

I could see thousands of reasons to be mad at Pitt's administration, but passing on Tom Bradley is not one of them.

The man is qualified to be a head coach. He's a western PA guy. Pitt might even generate interest amongst PSU fans, who may actually fill some of those empty seats. And he would stay and build a program.

Go ahead Pitt fans. Enjoy your rent-a-coach. See you back again in a couple years.

Narduzzi is saying all the right things in that he wants to stay for a long while to build something strong at Pitt. If he hold true to his words and remains a staple there, then it will be the right hire. Any good coach with success can be plucked with a sweeter deal/offer from a bigger school, but he did choose Pitt, so I'm optimistic. MSU is no joke, so if he can build something in the same realm of them(ACC title), I'll be on the bandwagon.

I will be watching with interest.

Eh, I'd rather have a guy who can lead this team to 9-10 wins per year for 4-5 seasons than a guy who would win 7-8 games per season for the next decade.
