Porter on Harrison

To hell with it... let James return punts. We know that somebitch will plow people over and go forward.

I think there is a little truth to Joey's statement. James isn't nearly as fast he he use to be and would be a liability in pass coverage. HARRISON is HUIGE in QB pressure / sack / rush / hurry so find a way to get him in there upon occasion. Seemed to do fine against KC. Maybe Joey is saying other teams game plan for when DEBO is in there and force him into having to cover because that would be a favorable match up for opponents. (*sorry James). None the less we are winning and I do see DEBO being inserted more as the season nears end and then the playoffs. I'm pretty sure this is JAME's last year and when he holds that Lombardi up and whacks that **** out the "rog" then pisses all over him, JAME'S career will be complete.

Yeah Porter is right! Harrison's coverage skills in Super Bowl XLIII we're absolutely pathetic

DUDE, Joey wasn't question ing super bowl XLIII Harrison ability, what he was saying today in current fashion as YOU know the NFL is about what can you do for me NOW. James Harrison is the ABSOLUTE ULTIMATE STEELERS ever and he will always have a fan in me but even I realize he is not what he once was. He will get his due at the right time and it will be big.

Watt will he do for an encore?

T.J. Watt dropped into zone coverage in the right flat and went up to defend a pass in the fourth quarter at Detroit, as he had in the third quarter at Cleveland, only this time Watt didn't come down with the football.

"I definitely should have had it," Watt insisted Sunday night at Ford Field, after the Steelers had survived the Lions, 20-15.

Outside linebackers coach Joey Porter expected nothing less in terms of Watt's reaction to a pass he defended but didn't intercept on first-and-10 from the Lions' 15-yard line with 4:55 left in the fourth quarter.

"He's always telling me he feels like he can't do anything right," Porter said. "I try to tell him, 'You're playing well, don't worry about it.'

"Just from the background of the family he comes from I'm pretty sure he's getting criticism from home, so he always wants to do a little more. I tell him the plays are going to come. The first week he had two sacks, and sometimes you go four or five games without getting one, but that's those guys (on the other teams) making plays over there, too.

"A far as his progression and where he's going, he's on track to play good football and he's been playing good football."

The Steelers' No. 1 pick arrived at the bye week tied for second on the team with four sacks (defensive end Cam Heyward leads with five, inside linebacker Vince Williams also has four), tied for fifth in tackles with 27 (inside linebacker Ryan Shazier leads with 64, Heyward likewise has 27) and second in quarterback pressures with six (behind Heyward's 11). Watt is also one of six Steelers with an interception (Shazier leads the team with two).

Watt compiled his numbers in seven starts.

But despite missing the Steelers' loss on Sept. 24 at Chicago with a groin injury, the rookie from Wisconsin maintains he should have done more than he's done.

"I'm just so close on so many plays," he said. "I just gotta finish."

Porter's applying more patience as it relates to interpreting the statistics.

And he's already appreciative of what the Steelers have been able to do with Watt as well as what Watt's been able to do for them in his first half-season in the NFL.

"He has the concept down," Porter said. "As far as him knowing the defense, he's doing real well. We can move him around, do a lot of different things with him because of how much range he has. He has good hands, a lot of good length. It's amazing to watch that guy grow. There's still a lot left that he hasn't shown yet.

"I'm looking forward to the second half of the season so he can show everybody what he can do."

Joey Porter: Harrison’s ‘Time Will Come’ In Cold Weather And In Playoffs

BY MATTHEW MARCZI NOVEMBER 1, 2017 AT 07:00 AM

Outside linebacker James Harrison may be the Pittsburgh Steelers’ rarely-used ‘relief pitcher’ at the position this season—he has only played a couple dozen snaps to date through the halfway point—but he is not finding much relief in his lack of playing time.

That is not overly concerning to his position coach—and former teammate—Joey Porter, who is only about two years older. “He understands the process, and we know he’s not always going to be happy”, he told Joe Rutter yesterday. “I know he’s going to be frustrated at times because he wants to play”.

Harrison has only seen snaps in four of the team’s eight games this season. He was even inactive for two of them. In two others, he dressed but did not play. That included Sunday’s game in Detroit against a neophyte at left tackle making his first start.

Porter said that the Steelers liked the matchup between Lions tackle Brian Mihalik and T.J. Watt just fine. He said that Matthew Stafford was getting the ball out very quickly, and was able to find a few escape lanes, when he was asked if Harrison would have made much of a difference.

He also pointed out that Harrison doesn’t really fit, overall, what the Steelers are looking for at this point of the season at the position—but that his time will come.

“T.J. is 22. James is 39”, stating the obvious in pointing out the significant age difference. “Having him out there covering, that ain’t what he’s doing right now. That’s not his strong suit”. The rookie Watt has been spending a considerable portion of his snaps on passing downs dropping into coverage, more than anybody I’m aware of anticipated.

“[Harrison’s strong suit is when we get to this cold weather and someone is going to try to come here and run the ball, I can put him in there and (running) isn’t going to happen”, Porter said of the man who replaced him in the starting lineup in 2007.

“We get into the cold and playoff time, I can have him in those tough situations and go rush the quarterback and get a sack because the situation is not too big for him”. He added, “it’s frustrating right now, but his time will come when we’re going to need him”.

This isn’t all too terribly shocking, but one has to wonder exactly what he has only averaged about seven snaps in even the four games in which he has played. Are they really doing so many things that don’t suit his strengths that they are not playing him?

Are they really simply holding him in reserve in order to prevent him from wearing out late in the season, as many are inclined to believe? Is it about allowing Watt to establish himself, while the fact that they have been winning has largely made the point moot?

Look, I love Peezy as well as anybody, but I call bullshit. If you think Deebo is going to see any more snaps in December / January you're ******* kidding yourself. Clearly they don't want him. They won't use him and they ought to have traded him to somebody who will at least pay him the respect of putting him on the field. How much you want the bet the ******* cheaters wouldn't "put him in bad situations"?

The cheaters traded their best OLB last year, **** them.
They used him vs KC, it was strange he didn't play last week. I don't know if they are trying to follow last year's script where he didn't play much in the first half, but they didn't have Watt last year who is playing very good.
If the reason they aren't playing him is because they are using the ROLB to drop into coverage alot, well that's a recipe for disaster

If he doesn't see any snaps later it is due to decline in areas of his game. Steelers brought back a declining player, they aren't doing him a disservice.

They play the players who they feel gives them the best chance to win.

Saying that I am sure he will get some snaps, just perhaps not as much as he or you or I would like.

He looked damn good and explosive in the KC game. So much so that he used his first pass rush move to set up his second and got to Alex. You put this ****** on the field. Especially against Ryan Mihalik. Holy **** man, he'd eat that kid for dinner!

Lets say our game plan was to play coverage and cover 2. I have no problem with that, but Stafford was beating it easily and we should have switched it up. We were getting no pressure and had our best pass rushers either on the bench or playing coverage. If you dont want harrison playing coverage then pick a scheme or play where he is not playing coverage. We were not stopping the passing attack anyways so I don't see how putting Harrison in would have hurt. We should use Harrison like Peppers (age 37, 7.5 sacks) is being used in Carolina. He is not an every down player anymore, but they bring him in when they need a big play. You cant tell me that having harrison in there at least part time would have been worse than moats, chick, or dupree.

I agree, I think he should be put in and allowed to rush the passer as a situational pass rusher.

No matter what the scheme is you want that other QB pressured /sacked.

I just think they just like to fool /disguise coverages. And with him you know you are rushing the passer.

KC game was a good example how to use him.

Well maybe #92 will get a chance at Brady in six weeks. Maybe eat Bradys leg off or something? But if Porter is that concerned about Harrison dropping into coverage, like the Lions game knowing Stafford would be slinging the ball all over the place chances are Harrison will likely be sitting against the Cheats as well!

If they have that same plan vs NE, you might as well not watch haha.

I understand Harrison is getting older and he needs to be used more sparingly. I get that.

But when your defensive line is getting stoned over and over, you may want to consider bringing in the strongest rusher you have for a snap or two, scheme be damned just to throw some pressure at the opposing QB a time or two. If nothing else you likely force Stafford to audible to a run or make a quick throw as he knows Deebo is going to get home quickly.

And when Watt was dropping it was Heyward going against Mihalik alot. Still a good matchup for us. The kid had a good game.

Yeah but Harrison is short and powerful something very hard for a 6"7 LT or however tall he is to handle, he'd rather face Heyward

Totally agree and I think DEBO is stronger than Hayward in that type of leverage department..........

Heyward was also a productive pass-rusher, tallying one sack and four hurries on the night, with four of those pressures coming against Lions LT Brian Mihalik.
