I used to do this every season dating back to almost the initial iteration of this Forum, back when they merged the board I was on with this one (around late 90's or very early 2000's). But there are three things to remember about preseason:

1: It's Preseason!
2: It's Preseason!
3: It's Preseason!

There are no "I know, BUTs" - it's that simple! Time after time people get too high or too low. My first and only Friday Night Lights was the 2001 season (I just liked ST Vincent atmosphere better, even after Saturday's, it was fun, but I like the St Vincent atmosphere better). Ed Bouchette was standing near us, someone yelled "Hey, Ed, how are they going to do this year?" He turned around pinched his nose as if to say they were going to stink. I shook my head knowing you can't tell in training camp or preseason, and sure enough a 13 - 3 season later and it proved my point. With the way they do training camp and preseason now, you really can't tell how a season is going to go until several games in. They had 24 days of two a day practices back in the day, Starters played a fair portion of preseason games. Now they have far less practices and far gentler, and many starters don't play many if any snaps in preseason. And it has show the past decade or so, some of those first games for a lot of the teams are very sloppy and almost unwatchable, announcers have even said "It looks like preseason" because in a way it is, except they count.

I digress, I got off on a tangent. But I could give example after example of how bad the Steelers Offense, or Defense was going to be because of preseason games. One that comes to mind was the 2005 preseason when the starting offense never moved the ball (Ben Roethlisberger: 16 of 36 (44.4%) for 145 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs, 32.8 passer rating), the starting running backs were injured. I forget who I had to talk off the ledge, thought we would go 0-16, first two games of the season 37-0 and 27-0.

It's fun to watch, it's great to see guys do good, it's hard to watch guys who should be doing good not play up to what you want, but it's preseason.

And stop hating on a guy that goes 10 for 11 and has the best throws of the night, especially that Germie almost TD

I'll hate on rudy all I want

he is a so so back up at best,

yes it is the preseason

but did you see that offense? that defense? plus Roberts returns......

Super Bowl Baby

and I think Howard's pass to Tonyan that was damn near a TD was a better pass than anything from rudy

Well said
But Bernard looked every bit as advertised!

I know, BUT this year we have a new coach.

I'm excited about several things. They were building wall vs. Run. The QB play, Bernard. The play calling. Guys open. Using the middle. Im hardly saying SB. However they passed the eye test of what I believed they would look like.

Pre-season is a good place to set a base-line.

Each game from here on out will be compared to games already played.

There was some good positive play last night and that’s a hell of a lot better than if they all played crappy as hella.

Keep watching the pre-season as it does help show the depth and play of the players and the coaches.

The value of pre-season games is more for the coaching staff / players / experience / ect………. Not so much for the fans to judge a season on.

Salute the nation

Well said DIC. I do think you get glimpses of the style of play. Are they going to tackle well. The line play (which was shaky at times particularly Fauntana). I think you get an idea what young players look like. I dont think anyone who contributed early looked lost in preseason throughout the years.

Yeah, but...

Other than @CoolieMan, I don't see a lot of hating on Rudolph. But he had the best throws of the night? Nah. His worst throw of the night was a 2-yard completion to Freiermuth on 4th-and-goal from the 3, which had no chance of being a touchdown because Pat was off his feet with a defender right on top of him. Had Mason held the ball for just another second, he'd have had Roman Wilson coming wide open behind the defense. A veteran quarterback should make a better read in that situation.

I compare preseason to pitchers throwing in the bullpen. Doesn't count, not facing legit hitters, yada, yada, yada.

If a guy is dealing 97 mph with great movement and location, with a 92 mph slider, a filthy 91 mph change, he is legit. Can he replicate that in a game? I don't know, but I sure as hell would rather have that guy than another guy dealing a 90 mph fastball and a nothing curve.

Same will Allar. Big guy, good footwork yesterday, ball just explodes out of his hand, and he hit receivers on target time after time. I take that 7 days per week over Kenny Two-Gloves, his happy feet, mediocre fastball, and penchant for rolling to his left into a sack.

All I know is my wife came into our bedroom and caught me masterbating. She was like wtf? What are you doing?

I replied you just dont understand they used the middle of the field
