ps. do not fire Tomlin.

He'd be perfect for the Chargers and they have a good draft pick this year.

They're in a tough spot if they keep him because it means they have to sign him to an extension. If it's anything less than a 3-year extension, they won't get a serious OC candidate to take a job here. A 1-year extension would indicate Tomlin's actually on the hot seat, meaning job insecurity. Even with a deal in place, a top OC candidate may not want to work here since the philosophy is play conservative and don't turnover the ball and from the outside looking in, the QBs are a disaster. Granted, if you can clean up this dumpster fire of an offense, you shoot to the top of the HC list.

Any up and coming HC has to look at this team a the 1 place he wants to be. Rooney would have pick of the very best candidate.

Well yeah, but hiring a head coach for the Steelers is significantly different than hiring an offensive coordinator with Tomlin coming back.

448 what you say makes sense with Art II really in a dilemma after this season.
In all seriousness I can see them losing out since imo Tomlin has lost this team.
To me the cleanest way is a trade and I like the Chargers idea because of probably a top five or six pick.
I’m also thinking Washington since they will dump Rivera and they gave some nice draft capital. Could be enticing to Tomlin since he’d be going back home.
Should be an interesting off season!

I'm just worried that Tomlin gets an extension and then we hire another OC off the scrap heap and another OL coach from a loser franchise and it's more of the same. This offense has been worse since they fired Canada, which shows us something.

Tomlin was an embarrassment to the Steeler organization in this game. Up 13 to zero and this give a pass defense could not stop two off the practice squad running backs, could not cover and forget tackling. Tomlin benches Mitch with two minutes left saying in reality the loss is on Mitch, total bush league move. By the way his boy Harris fumbles causing a TD and he still allows him to play why not bench Harris and put McFarland in, seems odd or does it. Didn't he send Gunner packing for fumbles just saying.

Been a fan my whole life, went through the awful times in the 80's, then a couple other tough stretches. If they don't fire Tomlin and find a QB who is an NFL starter level, these next few years we will be last in the division the way everyone else looks. That's just reality.

If they extend Tomlin, Art2 will instantly fall to Bob Nutting level of franchise ownership to me, for different reasons.

I just cannot even remotely entertain that thought right now.

I think any owner out there that might have been considering a trade for Tomlin just bailed. The only ones that have any control over this team just don't care about winning - pure and simple, from the owner on down. Except for a few holdouts like Heyward and Watt, the players have quit on Tomlin. He doesn't hold anyone accountable anyway.

Another thing to consider about the trade scenario is that we're largely assuming that the media is not inflating the "Tomlin will automatically have a job tomorrow if fired today" narrative.

I mean, the league has not exactly been beating down the Steelers' door to hire Tomlin's assistants over the years.

Getting premium draft picks for him might not be the slam dunk we've been led to believe it would be, though all it takes is that one pathetically desperate, naive, stupid team to make it happen.

This BS of if they keep him, he has to be extended, is absolutely BULLSHIT.

Tomlin is under contract for one more year, he has 3 choices, since AR2 would really not like to take the social justice hit that firing him would cause.

1. Coach next year and try to EARN that next contract with the Steelers, or another team.
2. Retire at the end of this year, and take a talking head position.
3. Talk to AR2 about a trade, see who is willing, where would he be ok going.

There is no reason to extend him under these circumstances. Those of you who think that you MUST extend if you don’t fire him are fukin idiots. Also keeping him an appointing coaches to work for him is also fukin stupid. He is the HC, he either is allowed to do HIS JOB, or you move on.

The two big selling points for Tomlin are he's a huge name and the never below .500 stat (well, probably only 1 season below .500 after this year). The negative is a lack of playoff success over the course of his career. His success came early and he's done basically nothing since. I don't even care if they trade him, this team needs a new direction.

A new start for him might be just what he needs, if he wants to coach that bad. He might not want to start over, maybe fishing every day appeals to him.

Another note, if they would get a new HC, the coach and GM should be able to pick their QB.

I don’t doubt that there are about 5 teams that COULD be seriously interested in him. Would any of them want to give up compensation for him? I’m not sure, but if he was just fired, I do think they would make a run for him.

I’m sure my comment will go over well, but instead of reverting back to Bob Nutting..... maybe he will be reverting back to Art Rooney. After all Art owned the team in 1933. Had no success at all until early 70’s. Was the laughing stock for most of his ownership. A certain head coach named Chuck Noll is the guy that saved this franchise. He gets the credit in my eyes.

common denominator is tomlin

Some argue Dan Rooney largely taking control from his father by the late 1960s was what really turned it around.

Everyone seems to want to paint the greatness of the Rooney's with a broad brush, but it might have just been Dan in the grand scheme of things.

Can't wait(sarcasm) to hear the sports shows tomorrow. I'm sure the jockacracy will know about the fan reaction and them wanting to get rid of Tomlin. They will dig in and repeat over and over the no losing season mantra, who are you going to hire to replace him, and it's the quarterback's fault.

Really good point. Art Sr. was really up there in years by the team the Steelers became a powerhouse so it makes sense his son had taken over earlier.

And of course we have seen what happened since Dan Rooney was no longer involved.

I would give Dan the lion's share of credit. It was Dan that hired Noll and Cowher.

I think the Steelers becoming a dynasty was Dan Rooney, Chuck Noll, and excellent scouting Blesto I believe it was at the time.

Ok. Everyone in this thread who wants to trade him please repeat after me. A coach is not a player that you can trade as a commodity. There are very few situations where team desires to rid themselves of coach, coach wants out and there is a market. I truly believe there would be a Tomlin market. I don't think the organization wants to trade him. But let's pretend they do. What is his motivation? He can say no I dont think so. I think I will collect my 10 million next year and take a year off. Then when the stink of the reality of my coaching is gone they will look at my record and there will ge multiple teams begging.
