Second, the reason the Russians died so spectacularly during WWII was the utter lack of preparation and idiotic treaty with the Nazis to carve up Eastern Europe. When the Nazis attacked, the Russians were unprepared and died by the millions.
And as Patton pointed out, dying for your country is not the point of war; killing the enemy is the point of war. The fact that so many Russians died - many from starvation and cold - does not qualify them for a ribbon.
