The Pittsburgh Steelers have made their second round of cuts today:

We have released LB Calvin Bundage, OL Aviante Collins, RB Pete Guerriero and WR Tyler Simmons.

We have also waived/injured S Antoine Brooks Jr.https://t.co/mmGqFtOPvl

They include Linebacker Calvin Bundage, Wide receiver Tyler Simmons, running back Pete Guierrero, offensive lineman Aviante Collins, and surprisingly they have waived defensive back Antoine Brooks Jr.

This last one comes as real surprise due to the fact that reports were that Brooks was having a strong camp. He also played well in his Pre-Season playing time. The team clearly felt different, and determined it was not enough to warrant him a spot on the roster.

This is the second of three rounds of cuts, with the next one being the biggest, cutting from 80 players to the final 53 for the season. We will continue to update on cuttings and signings as the Pre-Season wears on.

Brooks Jr. waived injured was the slight surprise. I am assuming he jumps over to IR.
Yep. Cut on the second five, so he can clear waiver easily and then be IR’d with possibly a candidate for IR return. Is that accurate Cope, or does he have to be active on the week 1 roster to be an eligible return from IR?

They tweaked the rule this year, as far as returning IR players, but the player has to be on the 53 man roster to start the season, then go on IR. So that would exclude Brooks from playing this year. Maybe they stash him on IR the whole season... or just wave goodbye at this point. We'll see.

“The NFL just made it official in a memo to clubs: Unlimited players can return from a team’s injured reserve list in 2021 and they’re eligible after missing three games, rather than eight weeks, per source. A popular change spawned by COVID challenges stays for another year.
Worth noting: As in the past, only players on the 53-man roster after cutdown are eligible to be designated for return from IR (or NFI). Limits “stashing” scenarios. So, this year that’s anytime after 4 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Sept. 1.”

If he clears waivers, he can be IRed. No limit for IRs this year or brining them back, and can come back after 6 weeks I believe. It's that or 8.

Tibs is right, you have to be rostered to be taken off of the IR list.

Wonder if Brooks injury was going to be lingering and would eventually require surgery anyways. Maybe they liked Pierre and Brown enough to just shelf Brooks a season and let him tru again next year at 100%.
