Rossi's Polamalu Article Unnecessary

I too love TP and respect what he has done for us in the past and how much he has meant in our past 3 superbowl runs but at this point in his career he is a liability in coverage and even in the run game. He doesn't have good chemistry with Mitchell and it shows in games. On the other hand for some reason Will Allen and Mitchell do seem to have a better chemistry I just think Allen is more sound and doesn;t guess as much. Troy just doesn't have the wheels to guess wrong and still get back to defend the pass anymore. He is especially a big liability in the RZ and has let the TE run past him by crashing down on the playaction way too much this year and QBs and Offensive Coordinators are banking on this to get easy TDs on our D. I say dress Troy but start Allen and let the chips fall where they may from there.

Troy has been s liability for 2 years... That's reality. The team as a whole plays better with others in the lineup. They don't have to guess where he's at and watch him miss tackles.

That said, if there is ever a team Troy shows up with a big game, it's against the Ravens, and it could be his last game.

Dude you are thinking of Polamalu circa 2012. This is not that guy. I love him, but you have to be real. He is a definite liability in coverage and is a run support safety at this point. At least Allen can still run.

AGREE 100% here. A lot of the long passes given up down the middle of the field (Green in Cincy just to name 1) wouldn't have happened to Troy in 2012. He's just lost a step...and Allen has that step. I do not want to take anything away from Troy or the career he's had but without the speed in the secondary, he's not going to be effective for us...put him up at the line with the front 7...different story.

I love the guy and that he represents what it is to be a Steeler, but I'd prefer to see Allen with the start and Troy used in different schemes throughout the game.

Rob Rossi is also unnecessary.

As far as Polamalu goes, I'd use him in certain situations, but not as an every-down player on Saturday if he's healthy enough to play.
And I think we will see exactly that. Despite his "age and speed", Troy Polamalu is still the smartest defender on the field and all this does is expand Dick Lebeau's situational planning.

Mitchell has said publicly that Polamalu and Allen play very differently, he knows exactly where Allen will be on any given play, he's a by the book safety and that with Polamalu he's still very good, but isn't a by the book kind of player (whoch everyone knows). Personally, this isn't the game for a safety to be here, there and everywhere, play by the book and Flacco will make mistakes. I'd use Allen for the most part if I were coaching.

The only thing with Troy vs Allen is Mitchell being where he is supposed to be? Mitchell has been up at the line when he has deep coverage and that has been brutal. Maybe it needs to be Allen and Troy instead of Allen and Mitchell?

They're both strong safeties though, I don't think the Steelers really want Troy in coverage, I have no idea what Allen could do in coverage.

I thought Allen could do both, Mitchell does not seem to do well in coverage. Shamarko may see some duty who knows. DL may have some 3 safety sets up his sleeve for all we know.

Knowing Dick Lebeau I doubt Thomas gets many snaps he hasn't been on the field enough for DL to trust him, I think he'll be given his chance next year. Mitchell while struggling early seems to have found some rhythm as of late, so if I had to guess I'd say we'll see him at FS. What they do with SS is going to be interesting. Maybe, they put Polamalu out there and see how things are going and if they go down hill fast he'll switch to Allen. I personally was hoping for Troy not to be cleared medically, then DL wouldn't have a decision to make at all.
