The trades don't matter to Watson himself though. Bonilla gets $1.2 million a year from the Mets for 25 years, beginning 10 years after he retired.
Yet the Mets could have bought out his contract in a lump sum for $5.9 million.
Watson is at least an active player, somewhat.
Then there is Pittsburgh's own Mario Lemeiux, the Penguins went bankrupt and owed him so much money that they just gave him the team.

And they compounded that error after signing Watson, by consistently kicking the can down the road and converting most of his salary each year to signing bonuses and adding on void years, so a huge amount comes home to roost in 2027. Then even more ridiculously they extended Myles Garrett after he said he wanted to go to a contender and a year later traded him so they have some hefty dead money on Garrett's contract hitting the cap at the same time as Watson.
