Ryan Shazier transcends position

I agree completely he is a faster, healthier Sean Spence.

The problem is I never liked the Spence pick. Ever. When I scouted him, I saw a Derrick Brooks wannabe. And I see that in Shazier.

Again, I said this way, way back in the Spence debate. If Lebeau had Derrick Brooks as a linebacker would he be a hall-of-famer? I don't think so. Good? Yes. Brooks was a player. But as good as he was with Dungy? Not a chance.

I think Tomlin has a hard on for Brooks. Wants to desperately find another one. Tried with Timmons and got good, not great, that has been restricted by Lebeau's system. Tried a flyer with Spence and got snake bit with the injury; Trying once again with Shazier.

That's a lot of resources to me looking for the next coming of Derrick Brooks when I am not even sure having the real Derrick Brooks would make this defense all that much better. I'd much rather have the next Lawrence Taylor or Willie McGinnest or even James Harrison. I know those guys are impact playing in Lebeau's scheme.

But he's the coach and he gets to chase his white whale.

In todays NFL I would rather have the next rod woodson or deion sanders than any LB. Although we do need someone who can cover the short middle field. Good QBs get rid of the ball so fast that even a great pass rusher can be mostly negated. In this draft there did not seem to be any consensus elite corners so hopefully shazier can run around and create some issues. I do not hate the pick, but it was kinda a "who, huh?" moment when they drafted him as I did not see his name in any mock drafts. After reading about him and what not I am more excited about this pick than JJ.

Which would be the bigger upgrade? Shazier over Williams or Dennard over Allen

I wanted him and I'm so happy! Easily the best person for instant upgrade at any position on the defense!
The second round pick was just butter man just butter! Only 66 more pages to catch up

I find it very hypocritical that one of Shazier's main "selling points" are all his measureables, yet a year ago with Jarvis Jones, the "measureables" didn't mean squat and we should all have looked over the KEI deficiency and 4.90 40-time and average change of direction skills.

Believe me, I don't mind it if the Steelers buy into the metrics and measureables of players more often than in the past, but don't try to sell me that's such a great thing this year when last year it didn't mean anything.

Look, Shazier may be 5-8 170, but with his speed and acceleration, I say he'll hold up just fine in the middle of the Steelers D. Oh wait, wrong thread...

I don't think the Steelers really believed the 4.9 40 time and instead went by JJ's tape and 4.6 times he ran in College, perhaps because of the reported bad hamstring during his pro day.

Man, we need Karma back.

Gonna go out on a limb here....Steelers prrrrobably weren't gonna find the next Deion or RW in this draft.

Lawrence Timmons and Ryan Shazier

Lawrence Timmons and Ryan Shazier will be one of the fastest, quickest, and toughest inside line backing core in the entire NFL. Lawrence Timmons has already proved himself as an elite player in the NFL, I don't care what anyone says he would start on any defense in the league. Lawrence has been somewhat of a hybrid type player in the league and Shazier is even faster. If our defensive line will do what they are suppose to than Timmons and Shazier will revolutionize the inside line backing position in today's NFL.

Thanks for checking in, Mr. Shazier, and welcome to the board. It seems you and Lawrence have been talking already.
