Salary Cap

i would cut allen we save 1,5 milion and we can sign mc cain with an average sb and use that amount for his base salary next year

I still can't believe we signed Cortez to what $6 million per season. The dude sucks and they made it a point to throw right at him last night when he was in the game.

Dri Archer was a wasted pick.

I think the guy is being missued. You don't buy a Corvette and expect to take it off roading. You put it on the open road and floor it. Putting this little guy between tackles is the same thing. I bet Bellicheck or Fox would how to use Archer properly.

I would think we need to keep William Gay on the team, it is unlikely that we get a big upgrade over him at his price and very easily could be a player for the same money and not as good. I suspect that next year we do not have heath or troy and are likely looking at players not as good as they were in their younger days.

I agree Gay has really played pretty good the last couple years since coming back and 1.6 mil is not that bad but here is my thinking. Ike is gone and we already have Allen signed long term and counting 6.9 mil next year. We need to improve here and sign a top guy(Maxwell??) this off season, with that said that is a lot of cash for our starting 2 corners. We have Webb at 585k and Richardson at 557k to maybe step in as a #3 guy and we end up saving about a mil on our #3 CB. This isn't a knock on Gay but more of us spending more money on our #1 & 2 guys and saving a few bucks on our #3 guy.

Gonna have to do something to get under the cap right? Not to mention McClendon and Thomas are plain bad and we can get the same production hell more production out of Brown/Bryant for far less money.

Looking more into this if we cut Allen after June 1 he would only cost us 1.35 mil and free up 5.631 mil in cap space and that would be a lot better deal there. Plus if he keeps playing the way he is this would be the best option out there.

no is the opposite we had to eat his signing bonus but we save 1,5 milion . basically if you keep him is 6,9 milion vs cap if released is 5,3 ...so since is useless i would cut him and eat the dead money , and move on

Sorry about that I had it backwards lol. There is no difference between pre and post June cuts and plus we would spread 5.4 over two years. The problem with all this is that every year we keep making "dead" money and we struggle with the cap. The answer is simple contracts like we gave Allen are bad, was he really top 5 contract worthy????? I know we are all still pissed that we let Lewis go but we can't panic and over spend. Allen got paid like a true #1 corner and his play is bad, these are the moves that are killing this team, imo!

It cleared 8 mil this year which we need very bad but it only pushed off the problem until next year and we go thru this all again. This has to stop, liked we talked about below we might have to do this with Allen.....all because someone is giving bad contracts...........

I think we really could save a ton of money and help our production with just a few moves(according to overthecap):

Cut McClendon cost 558,334 while saving 2.25 mil.........McCullers steps in here
Cut Cam Thomas cost us 500k while saving 2 mil...........Tuitt steps in
Cut Lance Moore cost us 322,500 while saving 1.5 mil........anyone steps in Brown is making 420k this season
Cut Gay cost us 166,668 while saving 1.5 mil.........Will have to spend money here CB is a spot that needs it

Resign Heyward to a long term deal changing his cap number next season from 6.9 mil to maybe something like 2 mil with money pushed out in years.
Extend Ben changing his cap number from 18.8 mil to something that can help the cap the next year or two use a nice signing bonus to be spread out thru the contract.
Troy and Heath have big numbers I feel we can keep one and let one go and I think it may be Troy... :-(

I am not a cap guy I am just looking at this website and seeing where we can make cut imo without totally having to replace half the team. According to this site our top 51 will count like 137.5 mil and the cap being projected at around 145 mil with the savings above we could have 10 mil to play with to fill some holes while having 4-5 mil left for the draft class. Also I am sure Bell will be looking for a raise as well.......thoughts?

- Cam Thomas should be cut at the end of the season. It was a good contract as the guaranteed money was low, now we can dump his fat ***
- McLendon should be kept, even if McCullers develops you need backups and rotation, the team is thin at DLine and Keisel is probably on his final year, McL can play DE too and his price is not that big
- Lance Moore I don't know. Justin Brown is regressing so he might not be part of the team next season. It all depends on Martavis development through this season.
- It will be very hard to find a better nickel Corner earning less or even the same that Gay does. Keep him

I see what your saying especially with Gay, gonna be hard to find a better #3 guy for that money my thinking is if we upgrade spots 1 & 2 then spot 3 could be had with a lower number guy. The other thing is McClendon is a big savings and if McCullers is our future then almost 3 mil for a backup is bad. The thing you have to remember is we are going to need to open up space, look at our roster when could we open 5-10 mil? I am thinking something is gonna happen with Troy and Heath and something will happen with Heyward too maybe an extension or even cut cause that will cost us 0 money while saving 6.9 mil but making yet another hole to fill.

I just wonder if we might not have personnel to run the 4 three next year. Jones makes Worilds look like a good deal although neither are worth much so far this season. (sarcasm)
Heward, McCullers, McClendon, Tuitt we have a guy on the practice squad that can fill in Nick can't think of his last name right now and add one more draft pick and free agent from after the draft.
Linebackers pick 3 Spence outside, Shazier inside or outside and Timmons inside or outside. I think those 4 guys in the front will wear down the o line and keep our linebackers fresh and pretty clean. we still have the option of sending one of the three on a blitz every down. That much size should put some pressure right up the middle on every down and they should be able to play the run on the way up field. We have had bad luck with trying to find the next Harrison or Woodley in their prime since the cupboard is bare we might look and see what else we have to use. Normally we have been blessed with having too many good linebackers on the team but that has changed since we drafted Timmons and Woodley, we have not found a good one for some time.
