It's not like guns were commonplace in schools before gun free zones.
That is a debatable subject. I have first hand knowledge of teachers that carried concealed back in the day before it became a federal offence to possess a firearm on campus. I also have first hand knowledge of a principal that kept a .45 Colt ACP loaded and locked in his desk drawer. And as stated before there used to be long guns in cars of both students and teachers. Hell the school I went to had skeet shooting as part of the PE curriculum.
