Sounds like reasons why you used to care about the Pirates…

Do you really think the current ownership is trying to be competitive?

Maybe because we do, I've liked the Pirates my entire life, since about 8 years old. Once I found Pittsburgh and the STEELERS it wasn't long and

I became everything PITTSBURGH.

YES, even the 2 time champions Women's football team / Caroline in the city / tom cruise movie as they all have a common denominator......................

Amongst many other reasons as well.........................

Salute the nation

Very interesting DIC….. I’m in same boat! Anything to do with Pittsburgh became my favorite as a kid as well. Remember even pulling out encyclopedia to read about the city and it’s history on living room floor. (For you young un’s, an encyclopedia is what we had to learn from before internet and google). I remember in grade school one of my friends asking me who my baseball team was. Chastised me when I said Pirates. “Is everything with you gotta be about Pittsburgh”? 🤣

I don't look for them to be competative. For awhile if they were .500 at the allstar break I thought they were GREAT, now days if if they are less than 20 games back from .500 I think they are great.

I can't explain it in a competative term but I still love them as much for the city as for the sport. I LOVED playing baseball and was a loaded arm and HUGE at bat player with passion about the game, still do have the passion but NOT a player anymore. ( I do occasionally coach batting to a leigion team or two locally and yes, durring practice I'll take an at bat, I'm considered a very hard out if they can get me.)

I guess when you add in the History of the Pirates, the great players of past / present (because one comes through here once in awhile) / city of champions tradition and rightfully knowing what the pirates are, they are still in my heart and will remain for some time wether they win or lose.

Well, as long as this thread has gone off track, I'll add a few memories.
I was in the right field stands with my Dad at Forbes Field when Roberto got his 2000th hit. It landed in the row right in front of me.
Fast forward to the summer of '70, my best friend and I were at the last game played at Forbes, a double header sweep over the Cubs.
People were walking out with all kinds of stuff. We took an electric telephone sign off a phone booth, that still lights up in my buddy's game room.
We carried a turnstile about 2 blocks before deciding it was too heavy and there was no way it was fitting in the trunk of the car, so we left it on the sidewalk on Bouquet Street.
I keep hoping for the Pirates to return to those day, but it seems unlikely that they will.

Many fans will live and die with a team competitive or not. Of course the Pirates aren't being competitive. Doesn't have to mean that fans shouldn't care. That is up to each individual fan to decide.

In the same exact scenerio I wouldn't stop watching the Steelers. I would have to invest in some swear jars but I would still be watching away.

I appreciate the nostalgia (Dave Parker was one of my childhood idols), but I don't think you can go on for hours about this current version of the Pirates.

I love the Steelers, and I pay to watch every Penguins game with the NHL package. I'm sorry, but I cannot invest 3-4 hours a night 6 or 7 times a week watching the Pirates, when they are out of contention by mid-May year after year. It's just not worth it for me to care anymore.

I’ve watched the Steelers after they’ve been eliminated from the playoffs, but that was short term losing and there was hope for the future. If they had the a similar business model to that of the Pirates for DECADES, I think I’d eventually stop watching, especially if there was 162 games of it.
