The Senior Bowl is Saturday, February 5th and there are a number of potential targets for the Steelers.

Here are some of the guys I'm interested in.

Quarterbacks:
Kenny Pickett, Pitt
Desmond Ridder, Cincinnati
Malik Willis, Liberty
Carson Strong, Nevada
Sam Howell, UNC

If you are interested in the QBs in this draft, you have five of the top six guys playing (only Matt Corral is not). It's hard to rank them because no one is a true star in this group and it may be team dependent. Maybe someone separates from the group. Already familiar with Pickett and Howell, I'm interested in Ridder, Willis, and Strong.

Running Backs
Dameon Pierce, Florida
Rachaad White, Arizona State

The Steelers need a legit backup to Najee Harris. I think it'd be smart to go the veteran route, but I think Pierce and White could both be very good in the NFL and fill the void nicely. It'd require a relatively significant investment, though.

Wide Receivers
Khalil Shakir, WR, Boise State
Romeo Doubs, WR, Nevada
Jahan Dotson, WR, Penn State

Really looking for depth here, but if a guy like Dotson falls into the second round I don't think we could pass him up.

Offensive Line
Max Mitchell, OT, Louisiana
Darian Kinnard, OT, Kentucky
Daniel Faalele, OT, Minnesota
Trevor Penning, OT, Northern Iowa
Luke Goedeke, OT, Central Michigan

A ton of size with these tackles and all could help the Steelers in different ways. Penning probably has the highest upside, but guys like Kinnard and Faalele could develop into dominate road graders

Defensive Line
Devonte Wyatt, IDL, Georgia
Phidarian Mathis, IDL, Alabama
John Ridgeway, IDL, Arkansas
Travis Jones, IDL, UConn
Logan Hall, DL, Houston
Perrion Winfrey, DL, Oklahoma

Most of these guys are IDL to build depth behind Alualu. Hall is intriguing because he's undersize right now, but could grow into a traditional 3-4 DE role.

Linebacker
Chad Muma, ILB, Wyoming
Brian Asamoah, ILB, Oklahoma

Asamoah had a breakout year, but is undersized. Muma is a tackling machine with some pedigree. Good size and I'd strongly consider him in the second.

Defensive Back
Roger, McCreary, CB, Auburn
Derrion Kendrick, CB, Gerogia
Coby Bryant, CB, Cincinnati
Damarri Mathis, CB, Pitt

A nice mix of value here with guys projected anywhere from the first to Day 3. Bryant could be a sleeper given the level of his teammate and Pitt CBs have been sneaky good in the NFL.

I really like that Pickett and the rest of the QBs listed are participating. Also will be a great game to scout overall. Lot of needs...one of my favorite games to watch.

Whelp, that's if for me. A QB with no hands offers nothing I want to see on a football field.
Seriously though, did Pickett refuse to have his hands measured? I know it's an issue that's been brought up, but he might as well have had them measured. They're going to require it at the Combine anyway.

you left off Bailey Zappe. Ill take him in the 3rd or something
I left him off because he isn't widely recognized in the top group of options. Those top 6 feel so clustered this year.

I think he deferred to the combine. No biggie if it is taken there.

  • Logan Hall | Houston
    • Height: 6’5 7/8″
    • Weight: 278
    • Wingspan: 80 1/4″
    • Arm: 33 3/8″
    • Hand: 9 5/8″

Keep an eye on Doubs, the wideout from Nevada. He is a beast; helped improve Carson Strong's numbers with a lot of tough catches. Reminds me of Rashod Bateman, but a little bigger.

QB that will soon be on more radars...

Aqell Glass

Write it down.
He has a problem with his accuracy, and it stems from his mechanics and footwork. If he gets the right team with an excellent QB coach he could be pretty decent. He has a strong arm and can really spin the ball which is important for bad weather games. He makes quick decisions, and you can see that he diagnoses defenses and knows where there are gaps. Being an FCS QB is going to be challenging to get on the team. The Steelers brought in a kid from Slippy Rock who reminded me a lot of Glass, and he didn't even make the 1 cut of camp.

Zappe is doing very well, but if you put Pickett on the Pats and Zappe on the Steelers, how do you think the numbers would look?
You can't be serious. Football outsiders have the Lions and Browns as the 2 worst overall graded defenses in the league. A two game stretch playing Detroit and Cleveland doesn't scream Joe Montana to me.

Or NFL teams overthought the negatives on him instead of recognizing the obvious 6,000 yard and 62 TD season.

I can’t be serious that the Patriots are better coached on offense than the Steelers? I think most NFL offenses aren’t coached by the Steelers and this scheme is holding back the passing game.

College production has no correlation to nfl success… its all physical and mental metrics, though too often a team looks too much at one of those and ignores the other side.

The Pats offense fits Zappe, but he has limitations… give it a few games for defenses to learn his tendencies and we will see if he continues to have success

To expound on my previous post, the reason Pickett jumped up the draft boards wasn’t just one good year in college… it was his prototypical NFL size and decision making skills as well as him being tutored by a former NFL qb coach in a NFL pro style offense.. in a year when most QB prospects lacked metrics or development

College performance gets a guy noticed, but his metrics get him drafted..
