Senior Bowl Thread

To expound on my previous post, the reason Pickett jumped up the draft boards wasn’t just one good year in college… it was his prototypical NFL size and decision making skills as well as him being tutored by a former NFL qb coach in a NFL pro style offense.. in a year when most QB prospects lacked metrics or development

College performance gets a guy noticed, but his metrics get him drafted..

It also helped him playing at PITT so as Tomlin had firsthand visual of his progression through the college ranks.

College production has no correlation to nfl success… its all physical and mental metrics, though too often a team looks too much at one of those and ignores the other side.

The Pats offense fits Zappe, but he has limitations… give it a few games for defenses to learn his tendencies and we will see if he continues to have success
But if a guy is averaging 500 yards and 5 TDs a game, he can obviously throw the football. If he’d done it for a power 5 I bet he wouldn’t have lasted until the 137th pick.

Go look up college football passing records then get back to me… again stating up in college means nothing in the pro game…

Joe Burrow, Patrick Mahomes, and a bunch of non-Power 5 QBs some of which were first round picks like Steve McNair and David Klingler.

Of the skill positions, I'd think running back is the one that might have stats on their side. The intangebles are most importantly looked at but Najee got his draft number called due to in part by his college production.

I agree with you on the QBs but again progress to the RB.

RB is also the simplest of the skill positions.

Since 2000, the top single season passing leaders:
Bailey Zappe
BJ Symons
Graham Harrell
Joe Burrow
Case Keenum
Anthony Gordon
Colt Brennan
Derek Carr
Paul Smith
Brandon Doughty
Patrick Mahomes
Bryant Moniz
Kliff Kingsbury
Matt Johnson
and at No. 21 for fun, Mason Rudolph.

Burrow, Carr, Mahomes, and a bunch of guys who did nothing in the NFL.

Fully agree and due to that I think the college stats are more in play. I had a hard time using a first round pick on a RB but now that it has happened, we just hope for the best.

I’m not saying that Zappe should have been drafted number one overall (although who knows, maybe he should have) just that there was good reason to think he could play at the NFL level. So far he’s proving the Patriots right.

I was a zappe fan also leading up to the draft..

But with a third or fifth round pick..

He is doing well and doesn’t look like the game is too fast or big for him..

My long term concern about his success is his arm strength and smaller stature without great escape or running abilities..
