Linebacker Ryan Shazier is likely to return Sunday for the Pittsburgh Steelers after missing the last four games because of a sprained knee.

Shazier ran on the Heinz Field turf Monday night prior to the Steelers’ 30-23 win over the Houston Texans. The Steelers also took a look at safety Shamarko Thomas, who has been out with a hamstring injury, prior to the game before deactivating both players.

“At the 11th hour we decided to use some other people,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday at his weekly news conference. “We expect both guys to be extremely close (to returning).”

Tomlin seemed less sure about starting right tackle Marcus Gilbert.

The fourth-year veteran left the win over the Texans in the second quarter with a concussion, and he has a short week to pass the battery of tests that will be required for Gilbert to play Sunday against the visiting Indianapolis Colts.

Mike Adams will start at right tackle if Gilbert is not cleared to play against the Colts, who will bring a five-game winning streak to Heinz Field and are tied for third in the NFL with 21 sacks.

Adams played extensively Monday night for the first time this season, and Tomlin was pleased with how the 2012 second-round draft pick held up against the Texans’ front seven and All-Pro defensive end J.J. Watt in particular.

“I thought he did an admirable job. Obviously, it’s not easy going in in the manner in which he did, some of the things we had to do from a game plan standpoint, the movement of J.J. Watt and how they employ their defense,” Tomlin said. “But aside from the technical things and the assignment things, I just thought he played with great energy and finished. He had a good look in his eye. Great night for him and we needed him to step up.”

This a match up where Lebeau and MT together have to mix in some different formations, just not 70% the 1-5-5 and 30% the 3-4, we need the 2-4-5 with this as the personnel
LE Heyward DT Mclendon DE/LOLB Worlids RILB Timmons MLB tampa 2 style Shazier ROLB Moats CB Mccain on TY Gay on Nicks Allen on Moncrief FS Mitchell support the run SS Troy shadow TY.

The double loop blitz with Kesiel and Worlids needs to stop, they can try that with Shazier or Timmons but Worlids is not fast enough to start at MLB and then loop to come around the RT, just blitz him off the edge. It does not look like the 3-3-5 will come back a set of
DE Heyward DT Mcculers RE Tuitt ROLB Harrison/Shazier MLB Timmons LOLb Worlids/Kesiel CB Gay CB Allen CB Mcain S/LB Troy FS Mitchell could really cause confusion for Luck with many looks only Mcculers showing as the only down DL and Heyward and Tuitt both standing and 1 drops (Tuitt) while Heyward blitzes and Shazier/Deebo blitz from the strong side, Tuitt drops to the middle where the TE/slot would cross to shut that lane down, Troy either based on the distance plays TY over the top or comes on the S blitz.

I like the combination of Vince Williams and Tmmons better every game, Williams has been thumping some players.

With Wayne out I could see TY Hilton blowing it up. If I am DL I tell Mitchell and TP if you get a bead on him early to take it and don't worry about the 15 yard penalty we will take it. I want him scared going over the middle and to aligator arm it the rest of the game.

I want to see Williams put a lickin on Richardson, Timmons/Shazier are better suited to match up vs Bradshaw

Good news. Like to see the young guy out there. As great as a story Spence is, he's really been struggling. Though to be fair, he's also basically a rookie.

Spence is definitely a step slower than he should be but he does seem to read the play quickly and that helps him get in position. But problem is he can't keep up or chase people down and I somehow doubt he ever will be able to.

Saw somewhere (the twitter I think) that Richardson didn't practice for the second day in a row.

Shazier back in the lineup makes me happy, but Spence has played well. Good problem to have.

Shazier can help a lot in coverage, way more than Spence

Trent Richardson may have the worst RB vision I have ever seen.

Its our loss if he cant play on Sunday/

We just need someone to drop the ball on the goal line (from their team) about 5 times so we can recover on the two or three, that would help a lot.

Spence seems to be very aware of what is going on. His snatching up the football while Worilds was celebrating is a great example of that. Worilds if paying attention and looking for the ball could have likely done the same but instead he wanted to do some stupid dance.

Start Shaz, way better package deal. Worilds is being very disappointing. Its like this clown is waiting to actually play. Is he shanking till later in season, to make his NFL Day view? You'd think he'd be playing for a interview, but with this kind of ****, he might be sitting. Coarse the steelers may hire him again..........

Salute the nation

I think they give Shazier one more week and even then he will split time with Spence. From what I've read he's still not moving well laterally.
