Free agency has been a whirlwind for many teams, and the Pittsburgh Steelers are no different. The team has made a lot of great signings so far, addressing many areas of need. While the Steelers will look to continue adding players to areas of necessity, there may be some room to look for a little “luxury.” Perhaps signing a player with some “star power” out of sheer desire. Julio Jones would certainly fit that role.

After being released by the Tennessee Titans, and clearing wavers, Jones is now free to sign wherever he wishes. Even though the Steelers are not in dire need of a receiver, the team shouldn’t rule out signing the former Pro Bowler. At 33 years old, Julio would make for a great veteran presence in the locker room. His years of playoff experience, including a Super Bowl appearance, make him one of the best possible mentors to the younger guys like Chase Claypool and Diontae Johnson.

Jones is one of the best receivers in the game when he’s on the field. Unfortunately, he was unable to fully display his talent for the Titans, appearing in only 10 games due to a hamstring injury. This led to career lows across the board for him in 2021, having just 434 receiving yards on 31 receptions and one touchdown. These numbers may deter Pittsburgh’s front office from giving Jones a chance, but he doesn’t have to put up the big numbers to be effective.

Just like how JuJu Smith-Schuster had a breakout year when Antonio Brown was drawing all the attention in coverage, Julio could provide the same environment for Claypool and Johnson. Pat Freiermuth and Najee Harris would benefit in the passing game as well. Knowing that Jones shouldn’t be left alone in man-to-man coverage, this would force defenses to focus more on him, allowing more breathing room in the passing game…and better matchups. This makes things easier for Mitch Trubisky, giving him a multitude of weapons to use offensively.

Ultimately, Julio Jones would be a great catch for Pittsburgh. His elite athleticism and leadership would be highly welcomed by head coach Mike Tomlin and offensive coordinator Matt Canada. If Kevin Colbert wants to make more headlines, he should sign Jones immediately to continue the trend of true playoff contenders for the Steelers.
