Steeler defense since the 2024 bye week

Im going to be somewhat hopeful the Oregon Interior DL is going to bring something to the table, if he doesn't they are ******. But frankly that's what they need to make needed changes. Honestly, if the season goes the way its looked through first two games you'd have to be beyond the village idiot to allow Mike Tomlin to have involvement in picking the next and developing tge next QB. New GM new HC. But Id settle for new HC.
 
Austin has the best job never put on the spot because we know Tomlin runs the show. Yet Tomlin does get questioned because he has the DC to point at. This defense how many times after the poor offense puts us ahead allow the teams to come down and score. Every year for years we have seen this and they think we are a top ten defense, blnd

He usnt stupid. He always has a scapegoat to insulate him. Yet why could he not just take the defense himself.

I’ve always believed a GM should have control of firing or hiring a coach. In all sports. And of course the Owner has power over both. I would love to know if Omar’s pick would be the current regime if he had his choice.

But the coaching staff remains the same. This team continues to have the same issues along the offensive line year after year and now we are seeing consistent issues creeping onto the defensive side of the ball.

I became convinced over time that Tomlin as a defensive minded coach was the wrong fit in an offense driven league. But now even Tomlin's defensive offerings are hopelessly static and stale.

Yep, it’s always the same losing effort when you play not to lose.

You have to play 100% in effort to win, the conservative thingy is gauranteed in most cases.

They weren't that good when he was hired, Minnesota under Tomlin was the 14th ranked defense in the NFL, Tomlin lucked out by having LeBeau on staff with all those defensive players already here when he got the job. The longer and longer removed we are from LeBeau and those players, the more and more that is proved to be 100% correct.

I don't get it at all. I train year round for free. If someone paid me millions of dollars to essentially workout,I would take full advantage of that and all of the resources available,be it company provided or my own personal investment into myself.

Yep. You and I have full-time jobs and workout just because it is good for us and we want to be fit. If my ******* job was to be in shape, I would sure as hell be in shape.

All they have to do is look at their head coach, has done nothing in a decade, is on a historic post season losing streak and he gets a raise every 3 years and is the 5th(right around there) highest paid coach in North America for doing what???

Another aspect of that is Tomlin establishing himself in the league as a secondary coach, yet who is the best DB the Steelers have drafted and developed in the nearly 20 years Tomlin has been coaching the team?

In fairness to Tomlin, they did draft a lot of good front 7 talent for awhile, but even that well has run dry in recent years.

The 2-DL defenses tended to be more effective when those two linemen were some combination of prime Cam Heyward, Stephon Tuitt and Javon Hargrave, as opposed to Benton, Loudermilk and a declining Heyward.

People clamoring for Austin to be fired gives Tomlin exactly what he wants...another scape goat he can fire and remove himself from his own role and responsibility in this defensive calamity.

Funny enough, the very first call I heard this morning on the fan in Pittsburgh was a fan complaining about Austin and why he needs to be fired, saying he has no schemes etc, lol. How can anyone not see it's Tomlin anymore???

I also believe the same, except that is not what Dookie seems to be doing.

Tomlin was hired as HC originally but was eased into that role because of his in experience with "Training wheels" if you will. He didn't appear to get total control of his position for a few years.

I think the same is/was the plan with Kahn in the GM position. Kahn really didn't have the full breadth of experience you would like in the GM, so they seemed to give him training wheels too. I do think he is starting to get a bit more of his power now. If Tomlin leaves/removed then I think Kahn will be more in control. Right now he is a relative rookie in the scheme of things and doesn't have or think he has the power to make the change with a HC of his tenure.

Now we you are seeing? have you not been watching the D in the last 10 years? These are not new issues, they are the SAME issues.

I thought the Vikings’ defense was ranked worse than 14 that year Tomlin was their DC? Thought they were ranked closer to the bottom.
I actually did look it up and they were ranked 14th in points allowed but 22nd for total defense and their record was 6-10.
That’s not too impressive as a DC and he only had the job one season before being hired here.

Eh, the defense at least kept the Steelers in games. I mean, Kenny Pickett couldn't score points and the Steelers still won more than they lost. This stretch since last season, the Steelers defense has been flat out bad. One of the worst in the league.

Tomlin had already started getting attention around the league as the Buccaneers secondary coach.

His personality seemed to draw teams interests more than anything else, as connecting with players is a big part of the job.

Plus, the Tony Dungy coaching tree was hot around that time, with the success Dungy, Lovie Smith, and Herm Edwards were having in the league.

Yes I do remember that about his Tampa Bay experience.
