Steeler Nation Poll: Would you give Tomlin a contract extension?

Should the Steelers Extend Mike Tomlin's Contract After This Season?

Funny. I think hat sums it up best is all of the "If we make the playoffs, it's proof that we have an awesome coach" stuff.

Here comes an avalanche of movie gifs, lol

Seems to me that's why we hired a defensive "guru" as head coach...

Here comes little miss sunshine.

I've never said that if Tomlin got the squad to the playoff's he should be considered a great coach. I think that is half your problem- you create these arguments/red herrings that no one makes, and continue to argue ad nauseam

If we reach the playoffs, it certainly would demonstrate that he does not suck. Not sucking does not necessarily equate to contract extensions, but it certainly opens the door to the possibilities of one.

And no- you are not cool enough to get a GIF.

Would that tell the story of his coaching?

The way the offense has improved definitely tells of his coaching and his staff. We have turned over the entire O except Ben. Now we are in the process of doing the same with the D, I would like to see how things pan out. The fact we are competing for a playoff spot is awesome considering the turnover. We are a team in transition. I have a little more patience than some though.

And stop it with the defensive guru bullshit. I have never said that or read where anyone else said it.

I cant answer the poll because it doesn't have an option for not unless we get into the playoffs this year. If we tank the rest of the season and miss the playoffs I don't let him finish this contract, I fire him before the team leaves the locker room after the last game. And I apologize for not putting the best leadership I could in front of them.(Had a BN CDR do that after relieving our company commander in Germany.)

What in God's name did I "create"? You said you'd extend him if we make the playoffs, but NOT extend him if we missed them. Or am I taking crazy pills?

Then why would you extend a coach who just "doesn't suck" with two years left on his deal? Sounds like you consider him quite good.

Some of you just don't want to answer for your own half-baked "opinions"

Jesus Christ. I never said you did.

Tomlin was hired with a defensive background, right? I would expect a defensive coach to be able to build a defense that's not one of the league's 5-7 worst. But hey, I'm spoiled, with my ridiculous expectations and dreams of being above mediocrity.

Some sensitive folk here nowadays

I think we need to see if the arrow is pointing up after this year or continuing to point down, if you will, obviously. The offense is good albeit inconsistent, but the defense has **** for talent. The day has come when Willie Gay is our second or third-best player on defense.

the only way it should be considered if Tomlin moves this team forward in the next three games and we win the division and at least go one game into the playoffs. I still can't see what he brings to this team or how he has improved in the years after he went to Super Bowl.

No, there are still too many questions with the roster and gameday performances to lock the team into 2-3 more seasons beyond the contract. I want to see if the team build on the season or stay in mediocrity.

How is the offense?

I would extend his contract if it involved him going to another team like the raiders or the cowboys or dare I say it the cheatriots.

Unequivocal NO!! This team may make the playoffs but will most likely be one and done. I see no progress in the area of drafting or developing good players - which is the epitome of good coaching. The fact that so many on this board think we will lose to the Falcons despite a stunning victory over the Bengals makes it clear that no one thinks this team has the moxie to go deep in the playoffs. This team has gone from winning a Super Bowl, to losing a Super Bowl, to getting knocked out of the playoffs in the first round, to not making the playoffs two seasons in a row. It is in a state of decline and this is nowhere more evident than on defense.

For me no extension...........

Lol. I remember a similar thread a few years ago right before he signed his extension. I wonder what the mood of this place will be once he signs another. At least it gives you guys something to talk about since he's soo poplar here. More Tomlin threads!

Frankly I think it would be a good motivational tactic to let him stew until after the 2016 season and know his *** is on the line. Probably won't happen though.

Art: "Mike, we're going to wait and see how things go back at the lab, if you will."
Tomlin: "You just can't do that!!!"

Ha! Now that's funny! And I agree, sometimes alittle motivation to keep someone from getting too comfortable can push them to where they need to be to get what they want. Maybe wait until he's at the end of his final year to keep him on his toes. But there's no doubt in my mind a extension is going to happen. The players love him, still not a losing season, and on the verge of making the playoffs this year. The Rooney's have one of the best franchises now because they're smart and don't listen to the fans.

I'm in the no camp for an extension after this year. There is a real possibility that the team will make the playoff's, even with that you don't have to extend him yet. He wouldn't be a lame duck coach with two years left. The even if he wins a Super Bowl may have been the silliest **** ever though. If by some miracle that happens he will get a nice long extension, and he will be the same coach he was yesterday.

They'll have to win a playoff game for me to be OK with it this offseason.

Overall, I'll need to some sign of improvement on the defensive side of the ball first and foremost.

Waiiiit, wait now. Are you suggesting there may be more to evaluating a coach than counting the number of wins and losses in his coaching history?

Next you'll be telling me his SB win from six years ago shouldn't even be considered! Yeesh.

I think we have made several mistakes extending guys like Gilbert and Allen by suggesting potential deserves an extension. This year we will likely end with a 9-7 or 10-6 record. Good, but not great. But again showing potential. I don't want to extend our coach in the same manner as we extended Gilbert and Allen just to see Tomlin regress also. We all know the Rooney's will not fire him since he hit his 8 win plateau already so that option is out. But does this season where we got beat by Tampa Bay and the Jets merrit an extension. No. So we wait and see what the team does next season. If we win more games and get further in the playoffs and don't lose to crappy teams I think we can talk extension. If we are a soft team again getting beat by bad teams I say we talk about a new coach.
