Steelers acquire safety Wilcox from Tampa Bay

He's a Free Safety. It looks like Mitchell's injury is a little more serious than we initially thought.

We could possibly see Wilcox playing more of an extra safety/linebacker along with Mitchell and Davis. The kid has experience in this role which could mean more legitimate man coverage.

This... i think he plays the role they may have wanted Stafford to play before he abruptly retired. This way they can keep Vince Williams as a two down LB

Dudes a thumper and that's exactly what we need in nickel and dime situations someone to come up and hit I think he's a perfect fit...

So it is the Steelers VS the new Giant ****....rell in the SB.

Sound prediction.

Amazing you got that.........great minds think alike.......

Salute the nation

dude sure seems to lay the ******* wood when the ******* wood needs to be laid.

According to Cowboys fans, he's a really hard hitter that takes bad angles at times, still a good open field tackler.... said he had by far his best season last year when he played. Generally though, most would've liked him back when he was traded

Few players are everything. May have to live with a couple deep posts going past in exchange for a good third down stick.

Mitchell says he is playing against Cleveland but I just don't see it. A guy, even a veteran, that misses all of camp doesn't just come in the week of a game and play after not practicing for weeks. If he plays, it will be minimal.

I doubt Golden is going anywhere soon. He' is the only healthy safety on the roster ..besides Wilcox now. My vote is cut shade tree and IR to return Sutton to make room for Wilcox and Bell..

Wilcox may also fill the need for a return guy, he did it in college.

I'd rather see Mitchell sit another 2-4 weeks to make sure he's 100 percent healthy rather than rush back and reaggravate it in Week 1.

The fewer snaps Mitchell gets, the fewer personal fouls can be committed.

Their DT liked him

Who stood out to Gerald McCoy? You might be surprised

Since all the key starters got Thursday night off, I stopped to ask Gerald McCoy who had gone unnoticed publicly and impressed him in training camp. His answer?

"One person I can say is J.J. Wilcox," McCoy said of the free-agent safety, signed in March. "He dominated camp. I don't know if y'all talked about it much, but he dominated camp. We tally up some things on the defensive end and see who's doing this, and J.J. was winning by a landslide. They'll find a way to get him out there. He's that type of guy. If I had to say one guy, it'd be him."

Wilcox, who has worked as the team's No. 3 safety throughout camp behind starters Keith Tandy and Chris Conte, started Thursday and had three tackles. He said he's worked in preseason to build a new identity for himself after being seen as a dangerous hitter, but not much else.

"I just control what I can control," Wilcox said. "I have to come in here positive, understand my role, come in here earn my chips and my respect from my team. I took this offseason to get respect and let them know I want to help this team keep climbing. I feel like I've changed my game around a lot. I was known for being a hard hitter, for being aggressive, but I want someone to know I can get the ball, too. In this business, safeties are known when they get the ball away. That's the name of the game. Hopefully it pays off during the season."

I think Wilcox didn't fit their scheme as well as Tampa was hoping. I am not confident that was more on Wilcox and less on their managing/scouting ability. So they brought in someone they thought would catch on quicker or fit there scheme better.(TJ Ward). Not sure if Wilcox is long term starter material but I am pretty sure he upgrades behind Mitchell/Davis.And I think that is what the FO intent is.

Just some interesting tidbits from Wilcox in the 2013 draft.

First, that was the same draft as S. Thomas and B. Rambo, two players that got some conversations on the message board over the years.

Second, he was very high on Mike Mayock's (who seems to do well grading DB's) top-100. He ranked 68th overall, which is pretty decent.

Was drafted in the 3rd round, 80th pick overall by the Cowboys

Is a straight-line wrecking ball type of FS. Likes to come down into play. Legit 6'-0", 215# play weight. Ran an unofficial 4.51 at the combine that got bumped up to "official" 4.57. Limited hip/change of direction skills as evidenced by his 4.09 and 7.02 shuttle and 3-cone times. I think there are some similarities in his game to Mike Mitchell (and same small-school background and that might be mid/late bloomers).

Film from college (#19)
