Steelers Claim WR Myles Boykin Off Waivers

Boykin fills a spot at this point and it was needed... The Steelers could still draft two dynamic WRs in this draft that have more upside than Boykin.
Boykin does have good speed and is a good blocker so no downside there.

Boykin is a No. 3 or 4 WR, at best. I was hoping to get him as a free agent but they really must have wanted him to claim him on waivers. This does nothing to reduce our need to draft a WR high. DJ very well may not be getting the long-term contract from the Steelers he may want. No more than $15 million. Hopefully, Boykin is already getting in shape and preparing so he doesn't miss most of a second season in a row due to hamstring issues.

Hamstrings were his issues? Agree hope he has that worked out.

your right. he fumbles the ball, gets sacked alot, and throws interceptions as well.

I am just saying that a guy like Boykin might be a better fit for a team that throws the ball to wide receivers not tight ends

Excellent Action discription.

I'm starting to think some of you see a name you recognize from another team and make some kind of a connection. The guy started 24 games and has like 470 yards receiving. That is horrible. Maybe a change of scenery helps him but I'm not paying 2.5 million for it.

The Steelers do pick up his contract, and ravens still have to pay the dead money on his signing bonus.

$2.5M isn't bad for a player that is 6'4" 220lbs, 4.4/40 43.5"vert, & 11'8" long jump. He's so SPARQ-ey he's electric!

For this draft for WRs he was: 9th in 40, 1st in vert, 2nd in long (by 1"), 3rd in 20yd shuttle (By .04sec), & bench was below average, but long arms usually don't translate to good bench scores.

He's a Z, so he's backing up Claypool, just like Washington did last year. Not sure if he's position flexible, but he would not be an X in our system. I'll look at his college film for slot options.

Downside, he has 33 catches in 40 games. Dude is invisible thus far for productivity. I'll look to see if it is scheme, or inability to get open, because that productivity is a red ******* flag!

He is a HUGE special teams contributor though. 68% of the ST snaps last season for BAL. I'm assuming gunner and blocker spots in kick/punt teams for both sides. Can possibly block, and has the height to rush on XP/FG

We did need to pick up a vet, and this fits the role. I would have rather had Auden Tate, but alas, ATL already grabbed him...

He is gonna make more than Claypool who had damn near twice his career yardage output in his disapointing 2021 season.

I'm not a Lamar fan and yes he does those things but still finds a way to throw a lot of TDs and yes last year he was under 20. Boykin had never been a big producer on offense to include college.

Money wise, the cap didn't move since Haskins $2.5M comes off the books.

Boykin's money is also not guaranteed. If we drop him before the season, the Steelers pay him $0 and there is $0 dead cap. That $214k signing bonus should be on the Ravens dead cap, though Spotrac has is listed incorrectly on ours.

It was a signing that the Steelers needed for camp and the contract is a huge plus.

Yes, so let's say he amassed that in two years then... He had 1206 career receiving yards with 872 yards his senior season at ND with 11 career TDs, 8 of those came his senior season. If he can consistently reproduce 50% of his senior season at ND for that price that would be a win.
The problem remains that he hasn’t yet grown one iota from the original knocks on him coming out… yes he has athletic ability out the wazoo, but he has real problems getting open against good coverage and in the nfl even bad defensive backs are the good coverage guys in college…. The good news is 21% of his catches went for tds in the nfl… that’s outstanding playmaking with the ball in his hands… the bad news is that is on a measly 33 catches over 3 years…

Again the original knocks on him… can’t beat press coverage or run routes well enough to get separation are the same things ratbird fans criticized him for…

At league minimum he is a good prospect… at 2.5 million, he best develop at breakneck pace to earn a spot

Ahhh, my friend, truer words have never been spoken. :peep:

So, we got a former ND WR who reminds us of the former ND WR we picked in the draft two years ago. Seems legit.

Ouch. Yeah that's pretty awful.

Unless I am reading the numbers wrong James Washington Signed for 1.04 million with the Cowboys. Pretty much an ouch for a second round draft pick. His last year here earned 1.09. Of course Myles can be cut without us on the hook for anything. I don’t mind the competition.

There sure have been a lot of draft choices not signing a second contract with our team.
One of the big reasons we haven’t been able to get to the next level for a decade.......

He was signed at no risk so we can see if he is what we are after or not. If he is cut, nothing but if he makes the team then he would be worth the price......... at least in the coaches eyes.

Good camp body competition is how I see it. Possibly a little veteran leadership as well.

This is money right here and Washington had one season well above Boykins complete output. To be fair Washington was never coming back. He felt hard done by which is fair or not. I'd imagine Rudolph feels the same.
