All the restructures and cap scrambling makes me think the team is 'setting up' for some post-game 1 veteran signings...at least i hope that is the case. Lots of teams do this to avoid guaranteed salaries for vested vets. I believe a vet signing following game 1 only guarantees 25% of the salary paid up to 6 games when they are again guaranteed full salary.
Guys the team could/should be looking at:
Stevie Brown - S (was a better than most S before ACL injury, still might not be 100% which would explain his release right before the season) Still probably better than most of ours.
Jason Babin - OLB- played both 4-3 and 3-4 on the outside as well as inside in sub-packages (could immediately replace Moats on the Left side allowing him to go back to ROLB to rotate w Deebo- Jones will be out due to injury or poor play soon enough,IMO)
Kenrick Ellis - NT ( better than either of our NTs, IMO and a certified run-stuffer)
Matt Shaughnessy - DE/3-4/4-3 - (could be a great sub-package DE when we go w only 4 rushers)
I don't expect moves like this from Tombert BUT I hope that they will see that playing the best players now gives us the best chance to win now. If we are going to truly run this cover 2, we need players who have helped teams who employed a similar defense, IMO.
