Steelers have 2 of the most underrated draft picks of 2019 Draft: NFL Insider

Okay for guys that don't have ESPN Insider...I din't realize not many have it, I am hooked on it....It is mandatory for me @ $4.99 a month. I hate clicking and not seeing a full article. Yeah, they get me each month

Pick No. 66: Diontae Johnson, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers

Johnson was one of the college football's most electric players, leading the nation with a 19.9-yard punt return average his last two seasons. The Toledo product had some drop issues this past season (eight drops on 57 catchable targets), but in 2017, when Logan Woodside was throwing him the football, Johnson had the fourth-highest receiving grade in college football. He's a precise route runner and one of the best after-the-catch threats in the draft.

Pick No. 83: Justin Layne, CB, Pittsburgh Steelers
Layne is long (6-foot-1, with 33-inch arms), explosive (an 11-foot-4 broad jump), productive (12 pass breakups in 2018) and has exceptional zone instincts. Layne's 89.5 coverage grade as a junior this past season was terrific, considering he switched from wide receiver to cornerback midway through his freshman season at Michigan State.

Why in the cosmic blue ice cream dreamsicle are you paying $4.99 / month for ESPN Insider?!?!?

You seem to be looking for attention.

I think I'd rather hear Bobby Boucher's take on this than Bobby Bufford's.

Drops are subjective. It's like an error in baseball. Contested catches don't count as drops. They also won't usually count a drop if it had to be some spectacular play like diving or having to drag a foot inbounds.

They usually only count a drop when they have the opportunity to get 2 hands on the ball and the DB did not touch the ball, nor immediately contact the receiver after he touched it.

The QB does come into play. Not so much for throwing ducks. Those are sometimes easy to catch. The main ways QB cause drops is too much velocity or throwing a WR into danger,

The velocity is easy to explain . Some QBs with cannon arms can't help themselves and every throw is fast and on a line. If it's a short throw, that can cause drops.

Throwing a guy into danger is a bad QB. You can't always lead the WR. You can lead the WR into a big hit. That causes alligator arms. A bad QB gets his WR blown up a few times and now the WRs are hesitant. They are bracing for impact instead of looking the ball in and securing the catch.

Vance McDonald was supposed to be a drop machine. I haven't noticed too many drops from him lately. Maybe it helps to actually have a qb who puts the ball where receivers can catch it.

TO dropped a ton of balls, but he made enough big plays that teams were willing to live with the drops. I guess we'll see.

8 drops on 57 catchable balls, not 57 drops. Still, that is 14%. They make a point, in the article to mention the QB who was throwing those balls. Not sure whey they mention the QB, but to note that the QB was crappy. However, if they were "catchable balls", seems like it doesn't matter who threw it.

It was an insider article, so I couldn't read the rest.

You just had to work some math in didn’t you?

ArkThor wants to make sure he's not just seen as a brute, but an intelligent Ragnarok.

I wish Cope was around to talk more about those hands of his, said he had an issue with his hand placement in many cases -- but I trust Darryl Drake to help him work on that. The guy runs great routes and beats press like no other WR I've seen in awhile. He's going to be fun and probably also frustrating at times to watch.

McDonald is performing above his statistical drop rate when he was with SF. That was a great unexpected benefit.

I will say, 12 drops in an NFL season is considered abhorrent. 9 is considered terrible. He's playing in less games in college, and that drop rate is piss poor. He has wonky hand placement, and makes routine catches much tougher than they have to be because of his lazy hand tech. He has to improve that if he wants to be a reliable pro. It's the first steeler drafted with bad hand mechanics since Sweed.

Thanks titus but I realize it is a highlites reel. Let him get his feet wet and then we will take a look at him. TC should be interesting and I hope he can translate to the NFL.

Salute the nation
