Fresh off of his 150th career win, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach, Mike Tomlin took to the podium once again for his weekly press conference on Tuesday afternoon. This time, it’s followed by a close primetime win against the desperate Chicago Bears.
Tomlin started his presser noting how impressed he was with the team’s red zone offense, and singled out the amazing performance of kicker, Chris Boswell.
Tomlin also highlighted how pleased he was of the Steelers coverage team; not allowing the Bears to have a significant advantage in their return game.
As far as the Steelers offensive line, Tomlin actually felt that they “took a step back” in controlling up front. He gave credit to the Bears’ front seven, but noted that this was something the team would need to “get back to work” on. They’ll use this experience for the young offensive line as a catalyst for growth during this short week of practice. Tomlin thought there were more times throughout the game that the Bears did a great job of being disruptive.
Defensively, Tomlin felt that the Steelers didn’t adjust well enough to the Bears’ run game (adjusted runs, wildcat plays, etc.) and he took the blame, thinking that as the game went on, the game circumstances would dictate different outcomes for the way the Bears ran their offense.
On an injury front, wide receiver Chase Claypool is being evaluated with a toe injury, inside linebacker Robert Spillane and defensive tackle Cam Heyward both with ankle injuries, and defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs with a hip injury.
The Detroit Lions are now the team’s focus and Tomlin said that running back Anthony McFarland will be back in the mix as a potential candidate to be back in the backfield come Sunday. He was listed as inactive for the Bears game due to Tomlin’s belief that the other running backs who were active Monday night gave the team a “better” chance to win for that game specifically.
Tomlin will stick with Ray-Ray McCloud after his costly fumble late in the game, and Tomlin is still at least pleased with punter Pressley Harvin III‘s holding efforts in the kicking game, despite his continued inconsistent punting.
