Steelers Hiring Arthur Smith as new OC

In favor.

Strong leader of men.
Worked with Ridder and knows the good. bad, and ugly about mentoring a young QB.
Like the style of offense they ran in Atlanta...translates well to the Steeler personnel and style of play.
Will be a favorable football strategic voice in the ear of Tomiln.

At first blush, not the innovative young passing game guru, but better than a couple of the other names interviewed, and in line with Steeler commitment to run. Hopefully they also bring in a passing game guy to help the WRs be productive.

And Munch. That would be phenomenal!

So we want from dead last in offense (Brown) to 26th or so? OK, the "Steeler way." Still shooting for the stars (or at least to the first story roof line).

Eh......but if it is a package deal with Mike Munchak then OK.

I just don't see how this is a transformational selection ?

So many really good offensive minds available out there --- for a franchise as storied as ours --- just seems like we could have done better.

Let me ask this ---- do you see this guy outsmarting, 'out gameplanning', 'out scheming', other defensive coordinators say (Ravens, KC, SF, etc..) ?
I wonder if he could give examples of how :
* you are playing against the leagues best run defense, what does your offense do ?
* you are playing against the leagues best pass defense, what does your offense do ?
* how many times a game do you play to run a 'jet sweep' ?
* what are your thought in regards to passing to receivers in the middle of the field ?
* changed his playcalling to take advantage of an in game injury that may have occurred on an opposing defense ?
* made in game offensive adjustments to counter opposing defensive schemes that prevented his offense's success ?
* was asked and answered the question: When your offense is not dominating enough to dictate its scheme, what are some in game adjustments that you would make for some various scenarios ?

He did wonders with Tannyhill, revived his career. Also got some good production out of some other offensive players.

They wanted a been there done that and someone to mesh with their run philosophy.

I don't hate the hire but don't love it either. If he comes with an improved Oline coach I will consider it a win.

Not exciting but solid. Classic Tomlin hire, a guy who was fired as a HC and will be no internal threat to him.

Everyone wanted a passing guru, We got a guy who will run and do play action. The good news is he actually knows what he’s doing. The run game should improve and we will have a real play action passing game for the first time in years. All 3 current Steeler QBs fit his system.

Just look at the two teams in he Super Bowl, as well as the other two teams in the championship games. All have effective running games. The Chiefs have really changed their game a lot. The high flying, "modern" offenses...Miami...can't really beat a tougher team. Buffalo became more running centered toward the end of the year for their success.

Everything cycles.

It does. What I can't quite figure out is why every team doesn't really try to dominate with the run. 17 games. Injuries pile up. Teams don't tackle as much in practice. November through January in colder climates. On a real cold day, some of these guys really don't want to tackle a guy like Najee Harris. IDK, but it seems to me to be the perfect atmosphere for a ground and pound attack.

This means they don't feel Pickett is/will be their best offensive player, Tannehill's best two seasons coincided with Henry's best two seasons.

Mixed feelings on this hire. I was expecting a wider search with interviews with Kubiak and Griese from the Niners staff who btw they could have interviewed regardless of the Niners being in the SB.
He’s never developed a young QB and one knock in Atlanta he didn’t utilize all his personnel.
Of course better than Canada but typical Tomlin hire, absolutely no threat and if he doesn’t work out, another scapegoat.
The good though he is very run heavy schemes so he fit right into the Steelers way of doing things.
Willing to certainly give him the benefit of the doubt and see what he can do here but it’s just a vanilla hire for me.

It also means he hopefully won’t have to be to succeed. That is the best way to handle a young QB. Take the pressure off him and put him in better positions to grow.
