Steelers Hiring Arthur Smith as new OC

Atlanta beat writers may just be salty as well. Lebeau looked like dogshit in Cincinnati as HC but we all know how he was as a DC. What he did with Tannehill in 2020 gives me hope. I am ok with conservative offense if it is efficient and puts enough points on the board. Scoring was down this year and a good conservative offense can win. Good being the key word.
If this is what Tomlin wants to be again going forward hopefully we straighten out the holes in our defense. Keeping Austin and most likely our current system defensively isn't a very good start on the defensive side of the ball though.....in my opinion.

he turned Tannehill from trash into Fools Gold, the guy had a celling, we don't know Kenny yet just that he is very capable to lead the team when trailing to victory which he did several times, 2-4 as a rookie and vs Vegas, Rams, Rats, Titans.
I believe with Smith Friermuth will be a guy going back to 5-8 targets a game. I hope he is used as prior Smith taking oc, the titans used Delanie Walker in the past and how Smith used a young Jonno Smith, a combo of Delanie Walker and Smith.
I think with the size and catch radius Washington has we should use him like Jessie James expand from not just a 6th ol guy but use inside the 20 simple stick routes 5 yards out to the flat and let Washington fight for yac yards, he is a load to bring down.
They need to look at his contributions in the pass game during uga back to back title runs.

I'm neutral about this, not excited, not horribly disappointed. I wish they would have interviewed Kliff Kingsbury or Byron Leftwich. I feel we could have interviewed more candidates. Now on to work on the QB situation

Jerrod Johnson has taken his name out of consideration as an OC and has re signed with the Texans to resume his role as QB Coach.
Also, Bobby Slowik has re signed to continue on as the Texans OC.
They both know they have a great young QB in CJ Stroud so can’t blame them for staying.

First of all……Welcome to the Steelers Arthur Smith!
Reading through the comments on here and what people wanted for their new OC kind of surprised me a bit. I swear for the last 1-3 years a high percentage of fans were saying….lets get back to Steeler Football. Let’s get physical, let’s run that damn ball down people’s throats. Ball control….. Let’s use play action to set up the pass…..etc,etc.
Well….we got that guy. We will see,but I think this will be a good hire.

I would have rather seen the Steelers bring in a guy like Klint Kubiak who is a QB Whisperer. We need an OC who can help develop a young QB and we saw for the past 2 seasons he really did nothing to help Desmond Ridder. IMO this is a bad hire only because they should have waited and interviewed more candidates. It's like they didn't even focus on an OC who could develop a young QB. This hiring screams TOMLIN....and I'm not thrilled with the pick but he's better than Tom Brown that's for sure.

Something that bothers me that the Steelers only interviewed three candidates when they said they were going to cast a wide net in their search.
I know Zac Robinson turned them down and didn’t even bother with an interview and instead signed with the Falcons.
I have to wonder if guys like Klint Kubiak and Brian Greise just weren’t interested in coming here, otherwise why would you not at least talk to them.
Both coaches interviewed with the Saints last week.
Idk something seems not right here. I wouldn’t call this casting a wide net with Jerrod Johnson who never called a play in the NFL or Thomas Brown with very little experience calling plays.
Only Zac Robinson had real experience and of course Arthur Smith.
Just what I was thinking. There may have been better people who didn’t want to come here and deal with Shades’ meddling.

It's a QB league, he's better than what we have, but just seems like a guy that's going to run alot of 2 TE's conservative Tomlin offense. Hopefully I'm wrong, beat writer from Atlanta just said Smith can not develop QB's.
Terriffic! So this is a wasted pick for OC for the Steelers! Just Awful man! Terrible HIRE! And they all love to ride Tomlin's jock!

This board would've had an absolute meltdown if they hired Byron Leftwich. Well, at least I would've had a meltdown, lol.

I don't think there are that many people who actually want to run the ball. That just happens to be the best option because our QB play is in the bottom 20 percent of the league. Play action is a positive, but we need an OC who can scheme open the receivers. I sometimes forget this until I watch other teams with receivers running absolutely wide open all the time.

An OC in the mold of Kubiak would've been great. You want to find the next great HC candidate because that means your offense is one of the best in the league and Kubiak, with his football blood and working under Shanahan would've been a terrific hire. He may raise his job profile staying in San Francisco as opposed to coming to Pittsburgh. Everyone wants a coach who is working under Shanahan. Who wants a coach working under Tomlin?

I'm okay if Pittsburgh commits to a power run offense. Should mean they will invest in the OL. Also long drives help keep the edge rushers fresh which is the strength of the Steelers defense. I think you can also get away with having an average QB.

Last but not least - it should bring back the punch them in the mouth attitude that's been missing for a while.

Leftwich is definitely NOT the answer.

Not a chance this is NOT true. Despite the media fawning on the guy, coaches see stuff and know.

The success of this new OC, will be directly feathered to the amount of Tomlin meddling in the OC’s job.

That “punch them in the mouth” has been long forgotten, it comes with the “soft” coaching.

People stop judging this guy on one stint and look at his whole career. He was likely trying to do too much in Atlanta. Give the man a chance. I swear at least a third were going to be unhappy no matter who was hired.

I honestly never know what Tomlin wants to do on offense. The front office built a power run team last year and Tomlin didn't act like it during training camp and most of the season. They should've hit the ground running given how well they ran at the end of the 2022 season. Smith fits the bill from the front office perspective. I do have some faith Tomlin won't meddle a whole lot. You don't do that when you hire a former head coach as an OC.
