Steelers hiring McCarthy

Pelissero mentioned some names for staffing:

DC - Patrick Graham

OC/Offensive Staff - young up and comer, Ben McAdoo, James Campen (OL)

Special Teams - Jon Fassel (if he can get out of Tennessee), Bubba Ventrone (if Cleveland would let him out of his contract)

I’m reading your positive comments on McCarthy and I get it, you’re trying to see the silver lining within the cloud. That’s good but I’m just having a hard time coming around with this hiring.
This to me looks to be a panic hire, status quo, let’s just run it back and stay above the mean.
This owner is horrible and continues to impede progress and is happy with the current state of the team.
I’m not trying to be negative but I simply just can’t justify or make any rational sense for this hiring.
Sorry boys!

I'm available. Might as well add me to the list...

I saw this earlier this morning.....I was sick over the hiring and almost vomited upon hearing the news!

He certainly wasn't my first choice, I was hoping for Chris Shula, but after thinking things through he might be better than some of us think.

He's still a very good offensive minded coach regardless of his record in Dallas. I'm hopeful that he might be able to develop Will Howard into a quality QB. I'm guessing Aaron Rogers comes back and that was one of the main reasons for hiring McCarthy. He's a lifelong Steelers fan and grew up in Homestead.
My main concern is that at 63 years old he's not going to be around the organization very long....maybe 5-7 years. Still I guess it's a long enough time to deliver us a Championship!

Thank god we didn't hire Brian Flores or Robert Saleh....those guys are nothing but trouble!

Onward & Upward.....I guess Welcome Back to the Burgh Mike McCarthy.....now go WIN US A SUPER BOWL!

Steelers Hire Pittsburgh Native Mike McCarthy As Franchise’s Next Coach

"Topically, SNY’s Connor Hughes posted earlier this week on X (formerly Twitter) about a conversation he’d had with Rodgers toward the end of his time with the Jets, one where the quarterback mentioned “wherever Mike McCarthy ends up” being his next potential landing spot."
GOAT riding with us one last time? Who ride?

After thinking about this for a few hours, not really but I guess just letting it sink in, we should have known this was the pick.
Rooney said it basically at his last press conference. He doesn't think they need a rebuild, doesn't want to take a year off. ....
This is a let not take a year off type if hire. Gotta have a winning season. That is the goal.

Hire a new 1st time coach? Might have growing pains. Might have (God forbid) a losing season.
But this guy? He can get us to 9 wins.

Very disappointing hire. I was really looking forward to having some new blood in the organization who wouldn't be happy as a pig in chit with 9 wins per season and a first-round shellacking on our way to make our tee times.

It is possible that nobody else wanted this job. Face it, this team is a mess and a half. No matter who they call the HC he's going to have a rough start here for a couple of seasons with no QB, poorly performing OL, aging (or aged) defense, etc. The HC might feel like a fall guy, so while other opportunities abound why walk into our mess?

It will be
For such a highly touted class it fell apart. Some returned to school, some underwhelmed.

Thinking the Steelers won’t find a franchise in this crop..
Unlikely but who the hell knows. Howard could still be the guy. Sounds like McCarthy is intrigued by him. Maybe they brought him in to try and make Howard the guy. If he fails then we replace both.

Since it is a mess, MM agreed to turn it around for the next coach to come in to take over the driver's seat? He realizes he has a window and agrees to be the stopgap but the team can still win games.
IDK, it can be done with good drafts and FAs, but they need home runs. Everyone really liked MT, but also realizes the team was a disaster in a lot of areas. Do you want to hand the keys to Nathan Scheelhaase? Probably not. Would be nice if he was the OC and then stepped right in after MM retires.

Brooks was a much more productive NFL QB than he probably had any business being, and McCarthy was a big reason why.

Brooks was regularly throwing 25+ tds in an era when it was like 35+ today. There were a lot of INTs, but Brooks was a flawed QB that McCarthy got the most out of.

To suggest otherwise is just blind conjecture, as Brooks was completely out of the league not long after.

Actually, his stats were consistent with his draft position and perceived ability coming out of college; he was pick 33 in the 1999 draft. Almost right in the middle in terms of expected stats and performance for that draft position.

We can agree to disagree on this, but McCarthy does not have a good track record as a QB developer, by the numbers. There is evidence that he can

1. Make a guy who doesn’t fit his philosophies worse (Dak, A Smith)

2. Needs an elite QB to truly succeed (Rodgers)

He is a great used car salesman, just like Tomlin. No wonder Rooney fell for it. If I had to characterize McCarthy, he’s the offensive minded mirror image of our other Mike, and the image matches very closely.

Come again? Dak has his two best seasons under McCarthy, Rodgers developed a HOF resume under him. Aaron Brooks also played his best football for MM.

For a WR - yes it is.
They may not have to. Lemon might make it to 21; if not, I would encourage you to look at Denzel Boston from Washington. Kids a baller. I like Lemon's teammate from USC, Jakobi Lane, and both IU receivers Sarat and Cooper. As a sleeper, ND Maliki Fields is 6'5", has great hands and good speed, and is fantastic at contested catches.

Brooks practically only played his average by the numbers ball under McCarthy and Dak got worse. The numbers and results don’t lie.

I'm not thrilled either, but maybe he puts a good staff in place that let's a favorable transition take place in a few years. You would think that is the plan.
