On Thursday, April 28th, the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Kenny Pickett, the new face of the franchise and the quarterback for many years to come. Pickett, although a native of Oakhurst, New Jersey, comes with a ‘hometown hero’ feel as he has spent his previous years next door with the Pitt Panthers. In this time, Pickett won many fans over and has already made a name for himself when it comes to sports in the city of Pittsburgh. Pickett has shown his leadership capabilities on the field and in the huddle, but it doesn’t end there. Many don’t know about the leader he is off the field and the work he does in the community, specifically with the Boys and Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania.

While in college, Pickett used some of his NIL deals to create change in the community. He branded his own logo and with the help of other NIL partners, PGT Trucking and Ithen USA, created the fundraiser “Pickett’s Partners.” The proceeds from this fundraiser go to the Boys and Girls Club of Western Pennsylvania. The BGCWP is an organization that provides kids with many different recourses in life. It provides academic and athletic opportunities, and academic scholarships. It also provides young adults with a workforce development program.

Pickett donated 200 ‘Pickett Partners’ shirts to the BGCWP and spent time with the kids at the Lawrenceville location. In a recent interview with WTAE News in Pittsburgh, BGCWP employees described Pickett. They were simply blown away at how well he treated the kids and talked to them.

“He immediately went down to the kids’ levels and looked them in the eye and was really caring,” Eileen Stewart, a former BGCWP employee told WTAE.

Stewart also mentions that Pickett and his now fiancé Amy, told her that they wanted to stay in Pittsburgh.

“Kenny is an example of what the term student-athlete means. Sports, yes, but it’s also in the context of being a good person with great character, not forgetting where you came from. It’s not just talking about being a good community partner, but it’s also doing something about it,” said Scott Koskoski, former Vice President of BGCWP.

Pickett himself was a ‘club kid’ during his childhood in New Jersey and has expressed interest that he still wants to continue to give back to the community as a member of the Steelers.

Steelers fans feeling the impact

Personally as a Steelers fan, this matters to me just as much, if not more than his performance on the field. How Pickett handles himself and sets an example for the next generation, leaves just as much of an impact on a community as it does winning football games. Being only 23 years old, the leadership qualities Pickett has showed he has, makes me excited and hopeful for the future of the Steelers. Over the last decade, we have seen a new influx of quarterbacks entering the NFL and now the Steelers finally get theirs. To know he is not only a leader on the field, but also in the community, is a great sign of things to come.
